Found this beautiful hotel on trip adviser, read the reviews and booked immediately. Wanted to spend three nights up at the bay of islands. Friendly greeting, fast service and an excellent dining experience ( seafood tasting platter a must ). We had a small issue with our room and were upgraded no questions asked. This was a getaway we needed....

My husband and I went for a romantic few days away and the staff went above and beyond their duty - very helpful and friendly. The Duke is beautifully positioned right on the water and provides a wonderful, peaceful atmosphere ... and the food? Wow!

Wonderful central hotel with some of the best food in Russell and a fantastic base for exploring the town and farther afield. Rooms are small but well-appointed and the staff are wonderful. Do not miss that chocolate terrine on the dessert menu!

Have stayed there number of times over last 20 yrs and while the style/feeling/ambience is always present, the 'new ' Duke just seems far more streamlined without losing any of its former qualities. Stunning attention to detail in decor (wallpaper, door/window trims etc) Staff so professional felt like The Ritz - particularly maitre'd - reposiitioned people and tables to accommodate...

A large water front room with ensuite. Fabulous views onto the water and pier. We had dinner the first night and very scrumptious too. Continental breakfast, toast, cereal, yoghurt, tomato juice for me. Staff were helpful and friendly even provided me with an early cuppa whilst listening on internet to my soccer team WIN.Yeah free wifi. We'll be back.

We took the ferry over in the evening and hoped to have a drink or two watching the sunset. The verandah tables were all set and reserved for dinner. We asked the maitre d' if there was a chance of a table for a drink as we were taking the ferry in about an hour and a half. He kindly...

I would recommend everyone do themselves a favour and experience...

A very historic place - the oldest licensed premises in NZ. It's been kept in a pretty good condition without being too posh or pretentious. Very friendly staff who were happy to help charge our electric car (with advanced notice). decent continental breakfast.
