From the moment when we arrived to hotel (this is what another travelers put in review, but I am not really believed ,unfortunately it was try) reception worker was so unfriendly and rood . Service at the front desk terrible. They don't want to lessening you. It was my family vacation group of 8 ,and also my sister birthday. When we get our room key (this is another fun) it was real key ,I don't remember when the lust time in any different resort I have real key it's ok , next one it was plastic cart for beach towel, this we find later 1 towel per person for all day, no exchange even if it wet -TERRIBLE .Then it was BIG surprise when we open door to our room it was one bad for me and my friend, and another room when my mom and her grand son (15year) have to be also one bad. I went to front desk with question what is this . They told me they don't have different room ,I showed them my reservation , when was clearly sad 2 beds , but they told me they provide what they have , and did not help me with this. I an not going to tell all story, terrible. If you want to be in restaurant ,(no reservation) you have to be in line at 5:30pm . but staff ho work in restaurant was giving us different information. We was trying to get time it was no problem in couple days in advance ( $15) you in. So I cant say everything was negative , we find out our way with all what we need .but from the first day it was so disappointment . I am going on vacation 2 times in a year different location, different place almost 20 years. Never Never happens like this. Internet not working , no service on a beach , no service on the pool. I filled they don't care . I think we not asking a lot,but we in 21 st century .If you want enjoy yore vacation take this hotel from yore list and I also enplane my travel agent about everything. She will nor recommend this place to her costumer .

Visited for a week in mid April with my husband and 2 friends and had a terrific time. Best trip ever and second time to Costa Rica. There are many positives to this resort and location: -warm welcome from David our Sunwing. Told us all we needed to know on route with humour and grace. -awesome friendly hard working staff -professional level night shows with the dancers who perform hard routines with smiles and energy that suggest they love what they do. Thank you Anote and Hedder and David for chatting with us about the dancers, the resort events and Costa Rica in general. Great Ambassadors for the RIU and your country. -excellent variety of and quality of buffet food and service (thank you Sammy, Roxanna and Anthony). Try the nachoes...chorizo sausages and poached eggs with salsa. -good el la cartes - Asian fusion buffet the best. Excellent sashimi and sushi rolls. We went twice. -clean rooms and pristine grounds with frequent sites of garden and cleaning staff doing their work throughout the week. They work hard in the hot sun. Exceptional thanks to all those doing these jobs at the RIU. -very fun night and daily events. Liked the RIU Party night, dancing by the pool, bingo, trivia and of course the best of all....the turtle release. Thank you Hedder. -delicious drinks...especially lobby bar and martini bar (our nickname) but the purple bar near night show stage. Thank you Greddy and Jeffrey. Best nightcap white Russians we have ever had. Yum. -beach is also great. Spent alot of time there under the trees. Water was warm. Sand great but hot. Bring water shoes or thick flip flops to wear to get across the sand in midday sun. Lots of small fish there, hermit crabs and iguanas to see at the beach. Even saw some resident howler monkeys in the trees one afternoon. Lots of bird species to be seen as well. Other things: -for the el la cartes, you do need to line up early if you want first seating but we did not have any problems getting in to any of them and the resort was at 95% plus capacity. Asian buffet uses the electronic buzzers to let you know when you can get in. Very convenient. - no problems with pool chairs if you dont mind being in the back rows. Perfect for those who dont need to be right in the action zone. - minibar- stocked every other day. Leave a note in the fridge with your requests if any...and maybe a tip. We had no problems. Its all inclusive so you drink mostly outside your room anyways. If you want more water (you get two large bottles a day in your room) take your empty bottle to the front desk and they will get you more. -room smell- yes there is a room smell which we concluded was coming from the toilet water? While tropical rooms can have a bit of a musty smell....this did seem different and a bit more potent then I recall from other resorts. The rooms are quite clean and well cared for so not sure what else to say. We closed our toilet lid and it helped. This did not diminish our enjoyment of our trip but is worth mentioning in the event there is room to improve that. - Excursions: we went to Diamante Ecopark. Zipline very cool. Animal park...very nice. Cultural tour.....caught only part of that. More coordination of all day events should be considered by their group. After first event....we were left to wander to the other two events without set times. As a result we didnt get the cultural tour completed. This is not RIU connected but posting here as its offered by Sunwing as an excursion and is right next door. Be sure to ask of the set times for the cultural tour start so that you can be there for the start of one if purchasing multiple activities for the day and not miss thus part of the tour. We also rented a car and went off resort to see La Fortuna and enjoy hot springs and the arenal volcano. Wonderful experience. Ticos are warm and welcoming. Country is beautiful and this resort is great value for what you get.

The RIU Guanacaste is a lovey property, the location is isolated but right on the beach. The facilities and the ground were in excellent shape and the pools and water park were great. The only issue we had was the AC in our rooms. Even the though the thermostat had several settings from a low of 18C to a high of 28C there was no difference in temperature, in consequence our rooms where very cold. We tried the buffet and 3 of the a la carte dining rooms and found the food at all them just average. The omelet station at the buffet was excellent.

Bed bugs in our bed .we changed the room their sheets was dirty. No one told us sorry at all. Food was ok but dessert always was the same. Never changed and didn't taste good at all . They turning off all the lights at 11 every nights .I'm not recommending this resort at all . Too costly resort for the services provided. Beach was full of the garbage. Everything it's so basic and old.

Our family trip was wonderful! We hope to go back sometime. Food was great, location was amazing, and staff was very friendly. Our 2 areas of improvement would be the cleanliness of the beach and correctly labeling foods. There was a lot of small plastic on the beach. I am sure it is a constant battle keeping the beaches clean, however I noticed more trash on the beach here than other countries I have gone to. (It wasn’t just 1 or 2 pieces, it was dozens within the vicinity of our beach chair everyday. Some of this may have been due to the surrounding countries. It also supervised me they used balloons in the foam party. Balloons just create more waste. Then the labeling of the food was wrong a lot or missing. As a vegetarian it made things a little difficult. I would think someone would food allergies would have trouble. Overall these wouldn’t prevent us from going back, but it would be nice if they could be improved upon.

Pacha - so disappointing. The DJ clearly has no idea what good dance music is. You give him recommendations and he’ll play them for 30 seconds if you’re lucky. No wonder people left after a handful of songs. Such potential so unfulfilled.

My family and I just returned from a 6 night stay in a two bedroom family suite. I was incredibly nervous about going given the bad reviews, but we booked awhile ago and got a good deal, so we figured we would take the chance. Upon our arrival, I was very pleasantly surprised. We arrived in the early evening on a Friday. We were able to check in immediately, with no line. The lobby was clean and beautiful as were the restaurant areas. Our room was to be expected, with the age of the building and lack of renovations evident, but we found it in acceptable condition considering what we paid (minus the elevator situation, continue reading for details). The grounds were absolutely stunning and exceeded my expectations. We found several things disappointing with our stay however. My main complaint is the over crowding that was evident most days of our stay, especially the weekend. I simply was not prepared for the crowds. This resort offers day passes to locals. While this is a great thing and locals are an important part of their customer base, it was just way too many people. I have a feeling they do not limit the number of day passes they issue. During meal times, I felt like I was eating in a food court in Disney World. It was just madness. Breakfast was the worst. On our first morning, we absolutely could not find a table. There were empty tables, but they had not yet been cleaned. I finally found a spot that seated 10 people and sat down while my family got their food. A server approached me and asked how many people in my party. When I told him 4, he got upset and told me we couldn't sit there. I explained I could not find another open table. He then got angry and stormed off. A few minutes later, a local family of 5 sat at the table next to me (also for 10 people). The same server greeted them with a smile and coffee and did not question them like he questioned me (I was not lucky enough to be served coffee like they were). By the way, you cannot take food away from the restaurants to eat elsewhere, so if I had not found a table I guess we would not have been eating (we were leaving on an excursion and had limited time). The preferential treatment of the locals by the staff was very evident. The staff in general were not friendly. Yes, they did their jobs, but it was evident they were not happy (probably exacerbated by the crazy crowds). I did not feel very welcomed by them and felt like a burden to them instead (yes we also tipped when appropriate). Also, there is active construction going on right next to the hotel. You will hear banging, clanging, and every other construction noise possible from 7:00 am until dark 6 days a week. They are building an expansion of the hotel, with an additional 301 rooms to be added. I'm not sure that this is a good idea considering the extreme crowds and lack of staff ability to attend to guest needs as things currently are. Also, on our end of the hotel there was 1 functioning elevator. One of the elevators was broken. A couple we talked with had been staying here for 3 weeks and said the elevator was broken the entire time they had been there. The elevator wait times were ridiculous and the elevator was small. Sometimes we had to wait 10+ minutes for an elevator. The linens in this hotel are also gross. The towels are tattered and grimy and a disgusting shade of mauve. It may not seem like a big deal, but when you are drying your body with a disgusting towel or sleeping in sheets that feel like sandpaper, it will put a damper on your vacation. A major concern during our stay was the lack of staff awareness and accommodation for food allergies. I have a child with a nut allergy. We were told to check with the staff at the buffet regarding what was safe for him to consume. The staff member we talked to told me "We have no foods here with nuts." This was not true. Every dessert they had was topped with nuts. At the buffet, only about half the foods are actually labeled. My child had to stick with just a few dishes we felt confident with him eating, because we had zero confidence in staff ability to handle allergies. If you have any allergies, especially to seafood, I would avoid this place. So many foods I ate had seafood in them, but they were not labeled as such. You are in a very remote location with a horrible, windy, bumpy road leading to the resort. If someone suffered anaphylaxis at this resort, the outcome most likely would not be good. Finally, at check out, a staff member cut our bracelets off (they do this when you leave) and then abruptly turned to answer the phone. There was no "thank you" or "safe travels" or any other kind of farewell. Little things like this really go a long way towards guest satisfaction. Once again, we felt like a burden. Overall, I have mixed feelings on this hotel. If you are ok with being amongst crazy crowds with sub par service in an older building and you do not have food allergies, you will likely be OK here. If you are looking for a more relaxed vacation with more attentive staff, I would look elsewhere. For what it is worth, we walked around the grounds of the Palace, and it is night and day difference from the grounds at Guanacaste (not in a good way). I don't think we would have been happy there either had we spent the extra money on the upgrade.

Dear heiditZ4317ZD, Thank you for taking the time to provide us your feedback on your stay at our property. We always recommend to leave the full name on feedbacks, so we can do the proper follow up of what you are stating and assist you when applicable. Please let us explain that when guests have a special diet with specific characteristics or require meals with some kind of restriction: gluten free, lactose free, vegan… we always kindly recommend guests to contact our Call Centre when booking, to ensure that there is a service available that meets their needs and inform the hotel reception beforehand so that, on the day of your arrival, we have food with the right characteristics, since not all destinations have easy access to products appropriate for these diets. Please do not hesitate to ask for this service. If you go on riu.com, to the 'Contact us' section, you will find the contact phone number for your country. It is saddening to learn that your impression of our hotel was not positive. And we are concerned by the issues you have raised. Nonetheless, we will forward your feedback. We hope you visit us again for a more positive experience. Best Regards, Hotel Riu Guanacaste Online Reputation Manager

Had a wonderful stay here. The staff are attentive, friendly and hard working. This includes the gardeners and kitchen staff. The rooms were spacious and cleaned every day. Beds were so comfortable. I hurt my back and asked for extra pillows. These were delivered within half an hour. I had a call from reception to check I was ok and to call if I needed anything. Excellent service. The food was lovely, plenty of choice and the steak house was excellent - and that included the visit from the raccoon family! I cannot wait to visit again 😁

Staff and food very good as are outdoor spaces. Hotel and rooms are very dated (1980/90’s ‘glam’). Had to change room after first night due to being literally next to the stage and bars - they were able to accommodate us thankfully because would have been impossible to relax in room until bars closed and the drunk/screaming adults eventually dispersed. Original room was 1047 and I would suggest requesting anywhere but in the immediate vicinity of this area especially if vacationing with young kids. Italian restaurant very good but Japanese was only ‘so so’ (also took 4 attempts to get into it due to limited hours and lack of reservation system). Evening bar service was slow (30 mins or more in some cases when ordered through waiting staff). Had a great stay and excursions were really good. Loved Costa Rica. Without exception - the hotel staff were excellent.

My overall rating is 5/10 for this hotel, to be fair we read many reviews before booking and our expectations going here were low. Cons: 1. No place to relax, the pool had 1-3 songs playing at once plus kid activities going on. The beach was quieter but a lot of people were around. We never felt comfortable walking away from our belongings. 2. The food was very poor. Be aware you have to get in line (no reservations) for each restaurant except the buffet around 5:30pm. Every meal was very plain and not once were we impressed. We ate at the buffet for breakfast/lunch, convenient but not a lot of options. 3. No nightlife- yes there is a night time disco but nothing for adults to do between the hours of 7-10pm after dinner. All the activities were for kids or were lacking in entertainment. Dinner could take 30 mins to two hours. We ended up buying cards to entertain ourselves. Pros: 1. All inclusive aspect is nice, never had an issue getting drinks although they were watered down. Food was always available even if it was only alright. 2. The beach is beautiful, you could walk down on both sides. The water was fairly calm, very warm, and clear. We saw lots of fish. Not a far walk from the hotel to the pool and beach. 3. Our room was okay, had to keep the fan on to make it cool. The room is outdated but it was spacious and we had a small balcony. Tips: - bring extra sunscreen, it costs $35+ at the store. Bring bug spray/after bite cream. We did get bit at night - the “king” bed is really two doubles pushed together - you can only have 1 beach towel at a time, pack your own if you can - water bottles can be requested via the app which makes life so much easier - bathrooms are hidden outside on the side of the restaurant near the pool - diamante animal sanctuary is super close and worth the visit! We also did atv through amstar and highly recommend Overall, would not return, would pay more to stay at a nicer place even if it meant going for less time. We were not able to relax here or enjoy our meals. A few of us ended up catching a bad cold, possibly from touching items at the buffets (bring hand sanitizer). Sad to say this resort is not for relaxation.
