The Pestana Grand is one of the best and most prestigious 5-start hotels in Funchal, Madeira and sits upon the Ponta da Cruz cliff with a view of the oceans and Cabo Girão. It is only 30 minutes on foot from Formosa beach and has direct access to Promenade do Lido, the famous promenade in Madeira. Surrounded by magnificent gardens is the island's largest outdoor saltwater swimming pool with views of the sea. This is advertised as a 5star resort well perhaps on some things it is but the restaurant definitely isn't. Arrived friday 3rd January
Lets start with the hotel its self . Very good staff at the reception most help full. Our room looks like its recently been refurbished very bright and comfortable.good view of the gardens and the sea good soundproofing very quite at night .
Bar staff excellent always smiling and helpful as is the rest of the staff.very good layout lots of things to do.pool and surroundings first class.
The only let down to the hotel is the restaurant .lets start for a 5star you expect tablecloths not plastic mats ,show cooking none yet just hot trays where that should be,on friday a large rice dish nearly empty and no effort to fill up this was i suppose was the dish of the day, wine list offered prices reasonable ,the hotel on their more than a couple of letters sent to your room boasts a dress code no shorts t-shirt at evening meal well they dont bother to follow this ,i am no snob but if you say something do it Saturday night more than one table did not the head of staff ignoring it .
Not impressed with the food or restaurant at the evening buffet unlike the Casino hotel its not 5 star .unfortunately i prepaid for 6 meals on check-in so now its a case of like it
The breakfast i must say is very good.
Its a shame about the restaurant as the rest of the hotel is 5 star.
I have 5 days to go here i only hope the restaurant gets better .
Ps there is a couple of happy hours at the bar with all drinks half price great value.

We stayed for one week at the Pestana Grand Premium Ocean Resort and were very pleased with our choice of hotel. Our room was on the 4th floor with a lovely view over the gardens to the sea. It was very spacious with comfortable beds, a desk and chair, sofa, armchair and tv on a cabinet that housed the fridge. The bathroom was large and had a bath and shower, with robes provided. Plenty of wardrobe space and shelves.

We enjoyed the easy 2 and a half mile walk into Funchal along the promenade and there were plenty of restaurants in the area. We did not eat out on this occasion as we had a buffet dinner included in our room price.

We found the buffet breakfasts and dinners of a good standard with good choice of dishes, although we would have preferred the food to be hotter. There was lovely fresh orange juice at breakfast (as well as another choice, such as melon or watermelon) as well as sparkling wine if you wanted it. The restaurant was never busy, probably due to the season and travel hesitancy due to Covid, which was ideal as we never felt crowded or too close to other diners.

We ate in both the Moroccan and Italian restaurants as we were entitled to one visit to each during our stay and we thought the meals were excellent. We particularly enjoyed the prawns and beef tagine in the Moroccan restaurant. Very tasty and the beef was very tender. We also enjoyed the tomato and mozzarella salad and the pork tenderloin on Parmesan risotto in the Italian.

We did not use any of the swimming pools although sometimes sat on loungers by the pool, weather permitting!

The hotel was very Covid aware, with mask wearing obligatory around the hotel, and the seating well spaced in the bar. Service was excellent, with friendly and efficient staff. Our room was cleaned beautifully every day.

We had a hire car and never had a problem parking at the hotel.

To summarise, we would happily stay here again and hope to return in the future.

Hotel was very clean and room was lovely, with a sea view and a balcony, but definitely not five star! four star at best. You get one bottle of water in the room and you have to refill it yourself. The towels were not changed every day I used the facecloth and it was taken to wash and never got a replacement, at all! Coffee and tea not replaced in the rooms and you have to ask at reception for milk. The air conditioning was not working in the rooms so it was not pleasant on a night, and the staff offered no explanation.
Only one bar in the hotel at night, so if it was at full capacity there would not be enough seats. Entertainment was the funniest I have ever seen in that it was so bad we couldn't stop laughing, in fact it's worth visiting just to see the singer, takes a lot of skill to be that bad. The young bar staff are very good and have a laugh with you whereas the older ones seem like they can't be bothered, if they run out of something they just say they haven't got any, instead of going to the store room and replacing it. They mainly serve local alcoholic drinks and have very few branded ones, if you want decent branded drinks you must pay a premium for it. There are far too many chiefs and not enough indians!! they're very good at giving orders to their 'lesser' colleagues as they give the impression that certain things are beneath them.
Food leaves a lot to be desired. Menu is poor and they have far too much tuna on the menu every day, in fact on the seafood night it was Tuna three ways, and no other fish to choose from, when asked if there was an alternative the helpful waiter said NO! you've only got what's on the buffet which I thought was very poor. They completely ran out of salt and pepper, which in a restaurant is ridiculous!!
Pool was very inviting but so cold that a lot of people just didn't bother going in at all, which was a shame because isn't that the point of going abroad to somewhere hot?
All in all I think the Pestana brand needs upgrading and bringing into the 21st century it is very dated, It's a shame they could do so much better, if I visited Madeira again I would not go to this hotel.
We did have a wonderful holiday however, Madeira is a beautiful island although difficult to get around it is so steep, you cannot walk you must get transport. Some beautiful restaurants on the island, even though we payed all inclusive we ate out a lot of the time. We met some really nice people, some who will be friends for life.

At present we are a half board hotel and would love to welcome you back to restore our good image and service. We stayed at the Pestana Grand Ocean for two weeks this January. Although it does not merit its 5 star rating, it has a spectacular location and beautiful grounds, the rooms are perfectly comfortable, if small, the included breakfast is plentiful and the cost is moderate by North American standards. We would use this hotel next time.

We arrived later than anticipated due to winds affecting landing however, we were checked in and given directions to the buffett restaurant and staff explained the basics of the hotel and the restaurants available.
Food in the buffett was delicious even though we arrived just before closing time there was still plenty of choice and the food was fresh and hot.
The hotel grounds are kept beautifully, our room was sea facing, very large and clean. There were such lovely extra details such as fresh miniature vases of flowers. Housekeeping was carried out daily and the housekeeper always left the most beautiful towel art! On arrival there was the one and only large bottle of water in the fridge however, I do think that maybe for a 5* hotel this could be replenished daily. we had a kettle with tea bags and sachets of coffee but again, these weren't replenished daily and we had to ring down every day for extras (we don't drink alcohol so tea & coffee are a must. The staff (particularly the lovely most helpful waitress in the Italian & Madeiran restaurant) were all so helpful. I'm a vegetarian and when we ate in the maderian restaurant, she made sure my meal was adapted to suit my diet. She was so helpful and full of knowledge about the menu and recipes to try at home. I feel awful that i didn't take her name but, to all of the wonderful staff (waiting staff and the amazing chefs) in all three speciality restaurants Thank You.
Our room attendant was amazing, always keeping our room clean and tidy. Front desk staff were always helpful especially when we asked to hire a car.
Buffett staff were lovely too.
We would love to come and stay again some time.

Unfortunately, I’d like to give this hotel a higher rating but feel it would be unjustified to do so.

I am currently staying at this hotel with my husband, child and in laws and have a further 5 nights to go.

We got a very good deal and had realistic expectations having read previous reviews. We were just happy to be going away to a ‘green list’ country after almost 18 months of not travelling.

First impressions weren’t bad, check in staff were pleasant and we have a full sea facing room - the view from the room takes some beating and it’s been great to watch the sunrise in the morning.

Rooms are a tad dated and sun beds around the pool are a bit dire - I expected this and yes the hotel is not a ‘proper’ 5 star, a European 4 star at best but this wasn’t a major issue for us for the price we paid.

Our stay however, started to go massively downhill as we entered our second week. It appears the hotel has got much busier and staff cannot cope.

Breakfast is a rugby scrum and it needs better organisation, individual tongs are given out for use in order not to share utensils but this alone is not enough to prevent Covid. The sheer number of people milling about around the hot food section suggests social distancing is not high on the hotels priority list. Our room is not getting cleaned properly. Cups haven’t been washed and towels have not been replaced on some occasions.

The pool bar ran out of diet drinks 5 days ago and there still aren’t any available, not really acceptable when my husband is type 1 diabetic and his only choice is water!! This really needs to be addressed.

As with many European hotels there’s the usual sun bed wars, families reserving their beds but failing to appear until 3.30pm whilst others people are left without a bed. Pool staff and management should not allow this to happen.

We noticed the hotel offers all inclusive, I’m not sure if this is a new concept to the hotel but we’ve spoken to regular guests who said standards have slipped since all inclusive was introduced.

Luckily we are only staying bed & breakfast. I’d hate to stay half board or all inclusive. On a different note, Madeira is lovely and we’d definitely return but not to this hotel I’m afraid.

Definitely not a 5* hotel by a long shot.
The hotel itself is very dated and only 2 floors are occupied by guests from tour operators, the rest are timeshare residents, Because of this the hotel is not geared up for AI guests, apparently it has only been AI for about 6 weeks. This is very obvious, I can’t say the food is bad but the choice is within the buffet restaurant with hardly any changes made each opening. There are 3 other a la carte restaurants but the Mediterranean and Moroccan only open once each week and the other 5 nights it’s Italian, which is fine but these get booked up really quick because of the poor selection in the buffet and so many guests are left disappointed again.
The bar only has local alcoholic drinks and no branded which you would expect from a 5* hotel and the bar staffing is extremely poor for the amount of guests.
The staff seem to be constantly overwhelmed by requests from guests for even the simplest of things, definitely too many chiefs and not enough Indians here! One waiter taking drinks orders at meal times which means you are often well into your main course before anything arrives at your table.
The aircon in the rooms may as well not be fitted and it is non existent in the hotel bar, resulting in you melting into the chair, bar AI finished at 11, which is quite poor, I don’t mind paying for drinks but 11pm I feel is a bit early. Having said that most people go to bed than listen to the same singer who performs about 3 times per week 😂, no entertainment in the day so it’s pretty quiet all around the hotel.
Spa area is nice and the Turkish bath and sauna opened while we were there, having been closed due to Covid restrictions.
Masks are required to be worn around the communal areas in the hotel.
The pool is lovely and always plenty of sun loungers available.
Will not put me off Madeira, my first time and will definitely not be my last, a beautiful
Island.

We enjoyed our stay but this is a 4* hotel clearly not 5* as quite dated, the best was the food & service in the restaurant always very good nice staff & good buffet.
The worst was the pool area as it did not appear in the 2 weeks we stayed to be hosed down and tiles never looked fresh & clean, not good as Covid should enhance cleaning. The plastic sun beds do not look as if they had been cleaned recently with accumulated dust around areas & not cleaned after use.
The pillows are without doubt the worst and cheapest we have ever used, I think pieces of cut foam ? Not the quality that should be in a 5* hotel.
On leaving the female receptionist asked about our stay, I said not bad but she never asked me to enlighten her as to why it was not better — a pointless question by her.
Lastly the Pestana Group of hotels is incredibly dishonest in as much as they obviously tell travel agents their hotels are open and customers book their chosen hotel only to find it is not open, very very underhand and this should not be allowed as it is false advertising.
We booked the Grand 5 days before arriving and it just opened on our arrival day, this decision just made after we booked it, and our taxi driver said he had taken people to the Grand and it wasn’t open. The Carlton being the hotel used in this underhand method of booking, we would have been very unhappy with the Carlton as we didn’t hear very positive reviews about it
If I book a hotel I expect to stay in that one & for that reason we are unlikely to book a Pestana hotel again, no certainty in staying in the hotel booked.

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused and for not meeting your expectations with the pool area, room pillows and front desk service. We are working together with the housekeeping and front office teams to amplify the standard controls, to prevent such inconveniences from happening in the future. We are working together to improve the quality of our service and assistance. Regarding the opening of this hotel, it was a last minute decision, due to the fact that there were still some noisy construction works in front of Pestana Promenade and we couldn’t open Promenade in that noisy conditions. All the reservations from Promenade were diverted to Pestana Grand so that we could ensure a more comfortable holidays to all our guests. The constructor is a private company that has no connection to Pestana Group and we cannot decide or interfere on their construction agenda. We ask for your understanding on this matter. We hope that, nonetheless, your experience was positive. Thank you for staying with us! Totally enjoyed our stay at the Pestana Grand, the position is beautiful and we enjoyed the walk into and out of Funchal. We also walked the coastal path to and back from Câmara de Lobos, as others have said without the tunnel a very steep climb back up to the road do be warned. Local bus also stops very close and discounted Giro ticket cards can be purchased in the little shop opposite Pingo Doce in the Forum.
The staff are worthy of five plus stars, every single one we encountered was very customer focused, helpful and friendly.
Covid cleaning protocols, mask compliance inside the hotel excellent and availability of hand gel first class, we felt very safe.
Review reluctantly lost a star because the apartment was very tired and dated, it is supposedly a five star resort and although kept clean it definitely needs updating to five star level. The apartment was serviced every day by pleasant staff which was good.
Bathroom fittings were old in the en-suite, really do not like shower curtains at all, needs a screen. Second bathroom on the contrary had a big modern shower.
The kitchen area is really tiny with only around 50cm useable work space for food prep, which when the apartment sleeps up to six people is very small, more than adequate for breakfasts and snack meals though. Note there is no dishwasher.
TV’s in the bedrooms were out of the ark, big sets on wheeled moveable stands, however the tv in the lounge was a huge, flat screen modern one with a beautiful picture.
Three different balconies and a bonus beautiful roof terrace which we were able to enjoy, they were five star!
We chose not to purchase any of the meal packages as we rarely eat three courses and therefore it seemed an expensive choice for us, a two course price option or even an menu with individually priced dishes as well might be an idea maybe for those not booked all-inclusive? Worth mentioning for those looking for a lunchtime or evening meal we discovered a fab, fairly recently opened place to eat just metres away up the road, Pietro’s Tapas and Cocktail, perfect for our smaller appetites!
We really enjoyed our stay here and will quite likely return, thank you to all.
