Good bits: nice ambience, good reception staff. Peaceful side rooms but never used. Lovely gardens, quiet area. Most floors are carpet which makes it peacefull. Good and spacious rooms particularly side sea views facing west. Very good cakes. Critical bits: For a 5star the food ( little choice, not good quality, under/over cooked, inadequate choice/quality of cereals) and waiters (some are grumpy and some just not up to it-need new management and training) are a let down. Gym kit just about adequate but need servicing. . Entertainment good enough for background music but not for the main event. Ridiculous that the same bottle of wine is 50percent more in the bar than in the restaurant. GM conspicuous by absence. It's a good 1hr walk into town.
Our trip to Madeira has been delayed for 2 years due to covid but we finally got there. The Pestana Grand did not disappoint, it’s a super Hotel , the grounds & pool area are beautiful. On arrival we had been upgraded to a sea view room which was fabulous, so roomy with loads of storage. The food was good and the staff all very friendly. Thanks for a great holiday.
A recommendation took us to this hotel and we were not let down! It was 42 years since our last visit to Madeira and this hotel was not there, it was banana plantations all around, now we have a lovely hotel perched on the cliff edge with some stunning views, including the highest cliff in Europe. The staff are very good and looked after us extremely well, nothing was any trouble for them. We had a sea view balcony which was perfect where we watched all manner of sea vessels passing by. The room is very spacious, plenty of storage and a lounge area to sit in after dark. Pool towels are available at no extra cost. We were on half board and the breakfast was good with so many different things to choose from, certainly sufficient to satisfy most peoples needs! I thought the evening buffet meal was fairly good, maybe to many things to choose from, but fine for us. We did check out the Italian one night, unfortunately I had a bad steak, but the waitress compensated us by offering us a coffee and glass of Madeira wine each. It was my Birthday during the week and without telling the staff a bottle of bubbly appeared on the day which was a wonderful surprise for which we enjoyed sat on the balcony prior to us going out. Bus to Funchal stops outside and costs Euro 1.90 and taxi are about Euro 10. Make sure they put the meter on. Be careful if visiting Funchal that the cruise ships are not in as the day we went two were docked and everything was busy, queues!!! Overall an excellent stay relaxing and would visit again. Thanks to the staff for giving us an excellent holiday.…
Stayed here in 2018 and wanted to go back after enjoying Madeira and the Pestana Grand. Friendly and helpful staff, clean and well kept hotel, gardens and pool. We went half board and the buffet was adequate, a bonus was that we could have two A la Carte meals in the restaurants per weeks stay. Sad to say a few things have lapsed post pandemic, the courtesy bus has gone, so have irons and ironing boards in the rooms, as have the tea and coffe service at breakfast. Unfortunately for my partner the gluten free section had diminished and the bread on offer looked like it had been out for days, staff were too scarce to ask for fresh We ended up taking our own. One nice touch was a complementary bottle of Madeira wine as returning guests.
The Pestana Grand is an hotel set in magnificent grounds a little way off a main road and a modern shopping mall - though it is a five minute walk up a steep hill. The staff are helpful and "chatty" if you want them to be. Rooms are large ( about 40ft x 15ft.) with comfy beds and modern bathrooms. Good storeage for clothes. provided pool towels and pool gowns. Good food (we were on half board basis) but could have been hotter. At time of writing, masks had to be worn in public areas. Excellent indoor/outdoor pools. plenty of sun loungers pool-side.
