John and Jacqui run a great lodge in Brice bay and are very hospitable. The food made by Jacqui very often with ingredients grown from their own garden was lovely ( the crayfish sashimi was terrific and just a teaser). The wiens and beers served are regionale and very tasty. The breakfast ( mostly made by John) is also fantastic....

My Kiwi sister in law booked this lodge for us whilst the four of us were touring the South Island. I am not generally fond of accommodation like this as I can find small lodges quite restrictive, however on this occasion I am very pleased to say that our experience was a most joyful one. The two hosts Jacqui and...

There's a lot to be said for the West Coast. Probably the best description I can give the West Coast is wild, raw, and pure. Crisp air, magic scenery, and seafood - oh my goodness, pure seafood. No need for a freezer, on our first day at Mahitahi Lodge John walks in with crayfish straight from the Ocean. It does...

In contrast to my friend below, I have visited Mahitahi twice in the last year. Both times, I stayed longer than I was anticipating; this place and its environment are truly hard to beat - even after staying at some of the far more upmarket luxury lodges in New Zealand. I come to NZ once a year and after some...

Very friendly (retired) people and like to have travelers over. Enjoyed the stay (one night) and loved the golden secret at the beach. Ask what that means ;-) Meal was simple and nice considering you are in the middle of...

Better than a hotel!! Lots of little extra touches make this a special place to visit. Interesting house with beautiful hand-crafted wood throughout the property. Quiet location despite being right on the roadside. Spacious rooms and attentive and friendly hosts. Jacqui is a superb cook and John is very friendly and interesting.

we had an excellent stay here with good spacious accomodation, excellent meals and friendly hosts, who went the extra mile to make sure that we made the most of out short time here. I left something in error and Jaqui had emailed our next stop and had it couriered for us with no extra charge. We thought it a much...

Surprising accommodation located right on the main highway but extremely quiet nevertheless. Nice big, well equipped annexed apartment presented by great hosts. John and Jacqui are a lovely couple and made us feel so welcome and at home, whilst respecting our privacy at the same time. Jacqui's cooking was first class and John is such an interesting character. His tales...

Thank you for your lovely comments, we are really pleased you enjoyed your stay and took the time to write about it. It was great to have you both here and the smiles on your faces after the helicopter trip was priceless considering the nervousness beforehand. We hope you enjoyed the rest of NZ too. An excellent place to be in a remote area. The house offers excellent rooms with excellent service of the family, running this Lodge. Specially the dinner was so very good, we liked the white bait very much. But also that John accompanied us at some activities, was very much appreciated. And much more then what we expected.

“Don't miss the location, google maps shows it as further from the bay than it is. Draw your curtains in the evening as the rooms look out onto the hot tub, although there are barriers odds are guest finding the hot tub might wonder past your window in the dark if you are one of the middle rooms.”
