the downside: the cabins - the floors really do need nailing down. However we were very safe from marauding insects and it was more a case of tripping over than nasties crawling through the gaps. Also not a lot to do, once you have explored the river. The upside: Scarlet Macaws, and many other birds, monkeys entertaining and a river trip. Lovely people running the Lodge, great gardens, clean air, peace, and superbly nice food. no other guests that we could see
Difficult to rate, probably closer to two points when comparing price with other lodgings in CR. Nice rural, riverside location, many bird species. Tasty fruitt, juices, eggs and toasts for breakfast.
Our hosts were wonderful. The property was amazing like out of a timeless happy film set. Dinner was delicious, I've not met an Italian that doesn't like to cook wonderful food. They were very helpful giving us lots of information and organising a taxi. We'll be back. X
It was very hot while we were there and the cabin had only one fan to cool down. This is a very, very basic cabin on pretty grounds. It was clean, with one tiny lamp to light things up. Very hard to find again in the dark when we came back from town in the nearby town of Sierpe. Not sure the other options in Sierpe offer more, and in the context of "roughing it" the cabin was OK. The managers are helpful and the breakfast prepared for us the next day was fine.
This is a very basic place to stay. It was the spaces between the floor boards where the ground below was visible that bothered my wife. Everything was clean and painted but to give it anything above 3 stars would be extremely generous. If you want to get the feel of living with the people of CR, then this place has that feel. One of the things that was exciting here was the amount of wildlife. There were far more birds here than Corcovado Park. You'll see flocks of parrots, toucans, hummingbirds and a myriad of others. Spend some time looking around. The reason we stayed here was to catch the boat to Drakes Bay. We were able to coordinate parking our car and finding our boat without much fuss in Sierpe. Food in town was pretty good and overall enjoyed the stay.
Veragua River House, a rustic genteel estate-like hotel surrounded by palm plantations and Rio Sierpe, is composed of owners Illeana and Benedetto's home and a couple of guesthouses in a beautiful open garden. Our guesthouse was a comfortable if basic suite with a bathroom, two bedrooms and an open living area, all framed with mosquito mesh. Breakfast served in the main house was fresh, tasty and abundant. Illeana was most helpful and arranged for our boat to Bahia Drake to pick us up directly on her dock as we had no car.
We spent 2 nights here in order to go on a one day tour of the Corcovado National Park. The hosts, Iliana and Benedetto, are delightful and the meals were lovely - they went out of their way to cook what we liked and it was delicious - we had a romantic, candle-lit dinner on the veranda ! The cabin was basic but roomy and clean with a mosquito-netted patio. The garden is Ilianna's passion: wonderful flowers and trees abound everywhere. The boat picked us up right at their dock and Ilianna made us a lovely breakfast beforehand. Sierpe is not necessarily on the tourist route and there is not too much on offer if one is not doing a tour of the Corcovado park but this is a lovely place to spend a while and relax !
We only stayed one night in the Veragua River House, but we were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome by the owner and the lady of the house. We used the bungalows, which are simple but nice and are located a little down the road of the main building, in a very large garden. In that main building, you have the feeling of staying with the family, having your meals close to the kitchen. We also made a very nice boat trip in the mangroves, being picked up right at the hotel.
Although we knew were it would be we found the location hard to find, we drove 4 times past the entery of the garden/house. The cabine (right next to the house) is cosy, but old. The bambooceeling is nice but not very hygenic, we could hear te busy bats in the night en even woke up from theme sqeeking. The food was indeed good and the garden nice and next to the river.
We planned to stay one or two nights at the River house and ended up staying four. If you can add a night or more to your stay in the Sierpe area do it - and stay here. Time has stood still at the River House and the owner (Italian) and his partner (Costa Rican) have created an oasis of restorative peace and tranquility - backed up with great food, fabulous rooms and beautiful bathrooms. The road to the River House is quite good although you need to be careful of potholes. The rooms are spacious, cool, adequately furnished and comfortable. We had a bungalow in the garden which was just perfect - sitting outside after dinner, watching the stars and waiting for racooms and other nocturnals to pass by ... what more do you need? The bathroom was excellent - huge shower with double doors opening right on to the garden - no possibility of being overlooked at all so we showered with a view :-) Plentiful hot water, thick towels and beautiful handmade tiles (made by the owner). The River House is officially B&B but you can order lunch and dinner as well if you wish. We had dinner there every night of our stay and it was excellent. Freshly made fruit juice (different flavour each night), homecooked three-course meal and all served on the terrace surrounding the main house over-looking the river. It was Valentine's Day whilst we were there and it was jsut the perfect place for a lovely dinner for two. Part of the terrace is enclosed (mosquito nets) and the rest is open - you can choose where you'd like to sit. Sierpe itself is just 5 minutes down the road by car. If you arrive in Sierpe someone from the River House will pick you up. We did a river excursion from there - up and down the river with some amazing experts who helped us to see sleeping snakes, sloths and nocturnal birds. Plus of course crocodiles, monkeys, other birds etc. Well worth it. Other excursions were available including whale watching, Drake Bay etc. All easy to book in Sierpe or directly from the River House (pick up from the bottom of the garden!). This was without a doubt the nicest place we stayed on this trip to Costa Rica. Friendly, comfortable, delicious food, privacy, tranquility and all a stone's throw away from Sierpe with all its facilities and tour options. We'd go out of our way to stay there again.…
