What an amazing destination for our honeymoon! We travelled from Joburg to tranquil Mooi River to Hartford House for 5 nights. We got better food and a more amazing room than we would have anywhere else! We stayed in one of the lakeside suites, number 15 Siyabonga, that has a private pool and a fantastic view over the water. The...

We recently spent a weekend at Hartford House. From the minute you enter the property until your departure, you are treated with respect, friendliness & overall warmth from all the staff. Bubbles on arrival, sitting on the patio enjoying the breath taking view of the gardens. We stayed in the Nhlanhla Lakeside suite which means "good luck" - Absolutely stunning!!...

I enjoyed my time here, staff is friendly and informative. Duncan is great, always asking about your stay and checking if all is well, actually everyone is like that, I guess is the mantra that everyone here leaves buy. The food is beyond great, the chef is absolutely magnificent and they serve 7 cause dinner on a daily basis or...

We were lucky enough to get a booking- and I now understand why. The service is olde world - discreet and colonial, as is the setting. But the Food is Sublime. A journey through taste- just magical. Surely the best in Natal- can't wait to return and try the next seasons culinary adventure.

What a beautiful place. G.M. Duncan is very caring toward the guests & he gives excellent service. Nothing is too much for the staff & they go the extra mile. The food, service & ambience is excellent. I will be back soon. If you haven't been there make a plan.

Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. We spent 1 night on the 17th October. What a treat. We were the only guests. The hotel had hosted a wedding over the weekend. The breakfast of eggs benedict / Salmon is highly recommended.

Visited Hartford house in August with 4 girl friends as it was our annual night away from the families to unwind and catch up, lunch was great but dinner was disappointing as the food was good but our light hearted dinner conversations were continuously interrupted by a wine company trying to promote their wines. Needless to say the wine company...

My wife and I had a delicious lunch at this lovely establishment some years ago, and had always hoped to spend a night there. We were warmly greeted and shown into a large suite, once occupied by General Louis Botha, the first Prime Minster of South Africa. It was extremely comfortable and well heated and there is also an open fireplace in...

We stayed three nights with our baby in a Pool View Suite. The room was beautifully presented and looked out over the gardens. It was perfect for the three of us. We went for walks, did a tour of the adjacent horse stud and were pampered at the spa. The breakfast was absolutely delicious - and we even had a...

We stopped at Hartford House for lunch on Friday before a weekend in the midlands. We've eaten at restaurants all around the world, some spectacular and some less so, Hartford House is the former! Duncan, our host, was exceptional and the service throughout the meal was on point and real five star. With a great setting and great service there...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Peering through one teakwood door at Hartford House, you face a Colonial world. Opening another, the distant sounds of an ancient people at work lilt across the silent landscape, a country of great space, spectacular mountains and big skies. This place commands a headland between the world of traditional cultures and the splendid style of our settler forebears. It is the resolution of all South African safaris. The journey's exclamation point, a retreat from the hubbub where you make sense of a fast life and its senseless details. This is where we learn to redress ourselves on a first name basis. There are too many luxury hotels in the world offering the same: a chocolate on the pillow, canned romance, and cuisine called "haut" because it's spelled in French. Hartford stands apart for its integrity. Its architecture, views, dining, sounds, smells, its racehorses and its people are all exhilarating surprises, unique to this Zululand, this culture, to Africa. Yes, you come here to be pampered, but at Hartford luxury is the journey, not the destination. The truth is, Hartford just happened. A home, and a grand one at that, which grew into a hotel. A community looks to it as its watering hole, its nexus of entertainment, its fountain of gossip. In so many ways, it's gained and regained inspiration from the cultures it celebrates. It is life's exception, a place at the same time comfortable beyond dreams, yet innocent of pretence. ... more   less
