Our incredible stay started a month prior to our arrival. Writing to reservations requesting information and placement of unit, Maribel Acosta immediately not only answered all questions but with a friendliness and warmth that prevailed the entire trip and set the stage for the most amazing stay. Grand Colony Island Villas are beautiful! Location could not be better, placed on one of the nicest beaches in all of Belize. Units very large and very clean. Furnishings are well above "hotel grade" taking on an "exclusive villa" appearance.
Kitchen was well stocked with all the items you may need. All 3 bedrooms were wonderful sanctuaries for restful sleep. The huge wrap around balcony overlooking the beach was our favorite spot in the morning for coffee, and in the evening for the sunset cocktail.
All the above being said, the best part of our stay was the remarkable staff lead by Maribel Acosta. They treated us as if we were beloved members of their family, always greeted with a smile, always offering their services, who could possibly ask for more? Even after our departure, Maribel reached out to thank us for our stay. Who does this!!! It is with very fond memories that we look to return to this amazing island jewel. Paradise in Belize!

We just returned from a wonderful visit to San Pedro Belize. We stayed at the Grand Colony Island Villas. It is a very clean and pretty hotel. Our room was very clean and nice. The beach access in front of the hotel was more than other hotels and very well maintained. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They assisted in setting up tours and dinner reservations. Diego, a security guard was particularly helpful and a friendly face as we came and went. We would stay here again!

My family and I had a wonderful despite the rains. The manager and staff were very friendly and did everything to make our stay wonderful. I like the fact that they called the night prior to check out to check on the time we would be checking out, and whether we would need a taxi. That was very thoughtful for them. The properly was clean and well kept.

My wife and I were going to Belize for a quick long weekend trip in November. We ended up for reasons out of our control being stuck there for almost 2 weeks.

The Grand Colony was "home" for that time period and the stay and staff went above and beyond our expectations!! The room was comfortable, the food was amazing and the staff (especially the GM Frank) was top rate!!

Highly recommend anyone traveling to Belize / Ambergris Caye to stay at Grand Colony. We hope to visit again very soon.

Thanks - Michael

This was hands down the nicest experience of our trip. We arrived in Ambergris to find that our originally scheduled hotel ( which will remain unnamed ) was sub-standard. Needless to say, my daughter and I were despondent, and called upon the Grand Colony to see if there was any availability. Frank, at the front desk said, "Well, I can help you ladies out, but since you've had a disappointing introduction to the island, why don't I show you what I have before you make up your minds?". Thinking to ourselves, "Anything would be better than the original place...", we said, "yes, we'd better have a look first". We couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. As he opened the front door to our "villa", Frank said, "I have to warn you, you may not want to leave" with a grin. Well, he was right. As soon as the large door swung open, my daughter literally laughed out loud with glee - what a GORGEOUS, fully equipped 2 bedroom "home" with a view to die for. Beautiful hardwood trim, marble floors, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances - even a washer/dryer in unit. Stunning view overlooking the pool and beyond to the ocean. And THAT was just our initial impression of the accommodations. Over the course of the next 5 days, EVERY person at that property that we came in contact with went above and beyond to enhance our experience. From Frank (who drove me to a pharmacy to get Benadryl for mosquito bites) at the front desk, to the landscape crew, who stopped their trimming to climb palm trees, cut down fresh coconuts and serve them to us, to the staff on the dive dock who took us on a fabulous outing, to the room service team who was cheerful, professional and very efficient, to the recreation assistants who got us all set with paddleboards / kayaks and anything else we needed. Not to mention the location. This is one of the FEW properties which has a walk-in beach without a seawall. Literally an over the top experience for us, and Frank was right - we did NOT want to leave. We have referred this property to everyone we know, and it will be our ONLY choice on our next visit to Belize. On a side note, as we checked out, I was discouraged to have misplaced a personal item, so I mentioned to the front desk that I hoped they might come across the item. Would you believe not only did they find it (in the restaurant), but they contacted me AND FedExed it back to me. UNPARALLELED service, integrity and value.

We stayed at Grand Colony Beach Villas (GCBV) in June, 2014 and found the staff & service to be as excellent as mentioned in other reviews. This was our first visit to Belize. The property was certainly 5-star quality and one of the best we saw during our time on the island. We stayed in the 3 BR, 3 bath Unit 14. We did learn & experience some things that we did not expect.
1. The Banyan Bay Resort, Grand Colony Villas, and Mansions gated residential community were owned by the same developer, but recently all properties have been put in receivership by the bank, and this lack of spending is beginning to reflect on the needed maintenance. I don’t know if it was the slow season or financial state of GCBV, but we negotiated 33% off the rates listed on the website, so it’s worth a call to Ada or Romar at the front desk.
2. Our unit was well stocked with a few notes. Two starter packs of coffee were provided, but no sugar or creamer (bring your own), nor laundry detergent. All 3 BRs and living room had flat screen TVs, but only the family room had a DVD player.
3. We were without water in our unit 3 times during the week for about 2 hours each time.
4. Other reviewers had mentioned that sea grass was a problem near the shore but one could swim free of the grass at the end of each resort’s pier. That is not the case, and in fact sea grass dominates the seabed from shore to the reef, about ½ mile offshore.
5. At GCBV, the lack of regular maintenance has left dead sea grass piled up on shore, creating an odor and making the beach unusable (see attached photos).
6. The barrier reef is too far to reach by kayak, and too narrow to snorkel safely in proximity to the heavy surf except at Hol Chan.
7. The best way to travel to town for dining or shopping is to flag down a taxi for $5 USD each way for up to 5 people, much cheaper than golf cart rentals ($75 - $109 per day for 4 or 6 person cart).
8. Groceries are very convenient to GCBV as Super Buy has opened a new location about 1 ½ blocks away. The prices were not that much more than U.S. prices, except for peanut butter.
9. “The Baker” is across the street from Super Buy and sells fabulous homemade breads, croissants, cinnamon rolls, and cookies.
10. While desalinated water on the island is supposed to be safe to drink, all restaurants made a point to serve bottled water and noted that their ice was also made from bottled water. So draw your own conclusion about drinking the water.
11. There is a 12.5% government tax on most purchases and restaurants, but was usually included in the prices.
12. All of the locals we encountered on Ambergris Caye were very genuine, helpful and friendly. However, the infrastructure on the island in town and away from the resorts is decidedly third world, not the more upscale Belize that we read about & expected.
13. We booked a few water activities through Belize Pro Dive, and received great service from Junior. We also learned that they recently relocated from the GCBV pier to the Banyan Bay pier.
14. We never had a bad meal or bad service while dining out at Rico’s, El Divino, Victoria House (excellent & expensive), Blue Water Grill, or Elvi’s Kitchen.
15. Amigos del Mar runs the only boat to Blue Hole, and all of the dive shops sub to them for the Blue Hole trip. The service onboard was very good including setup of your gear and changing tanks for you, as expected, and lunch on the beach at Half Moon Caye (salad, beans and rice, chicken, soda). Underwater I was also pleased with the service from our guide Giovanni.
16. We had read about the quality of fruits & veggies from the roadside fruit stands, with better prices than at the grocery stores. Maybe it was the time of year (June), or the few fruit stands we tried, but we found the fruit stand prices not much different than Super Buy, and the quality not that good, except for bananas ($1 USD per dozen)
17. GCBV pays a taxi for airport transfers each way.
18. The weather forecast for early June was for Thunderstorms every day. In fact, we had beautiful sunny to partly cloudy weather every day with the exception of a 10 – 20 minute shower or storm during the night or between 4 – 5 AM each day.

Bottom Line
Did we enjoy our vacation? Yes, for the people, the Grand Colony Villas, and the dining.
Would we ever go back to Belize? Probably not, once is enough.

We reluctantly just returned from two weeks at Grand Colony that we shared with friends and family. This is our 6th time at GC and it only gets better each year. We stay in the three bedroom unit on the water and wake early each morning to drink our coffee and watch the sun come up. The three bed units are spacious and luxurious with virtually everything we need including daily housekeeping services by Maria.

Frank, Romar, Sylvia and the rest of the staff seem to anticipate our needs and are quick to respond. They pick us up at the airport and make sure our unit is stocked with whatever we have ordered in advance. We always get spoiled at GC and it takes a while to adjust back to the real world.

If you plan to visit, contact Frank in advance and he can make all the arrangements you need for transportation, golf carts, snorkeling and scuba and mainland trips. Makes your trip easy and enjoyable.

When we visit, we always like to take a day for fishing, snappers and barracuda are wonderful. We catch them in the morning and take next door to La Divino to have them prepared for our dinner. Broiled, blackened and fried. Perfect end to a perfect day.

Speaking of food, there are many wonderful restaurants in the San Pedro area, a short list would be. El Divinio for burgers and your fish; Victoria House for gourmet food and desserts (molten chocolate!); Georges for breakfast and lunch with a local flavor; Fidos for burgers and wonderful conch fritters, plus live entertainment-Dennis Wolfe; Rico's for any meal, right on the water with a beautiful breeze; Blue River Grill for dinner or pizza and Belikin beer, and finally Sunset Bar and Grill for lobster and wine and a chance to feed the tarpons. Too many more fine places to dine to mention and half the fun is to wander down Front Street and Middle street and explore for yourself. No matter where, you need to try the Belizian staple of stew chicken with rice an bean (suggest Elvi's on Middle Street).

If you like the water, suggest a trip with Mercedes in his glass bottom boat out to Shark/Ray alley and Hol Chan. There are faster boats, but have used Mercedes for years and always enjoy the trip. He seems to be more interested in making sure you have a good experience than how many folks he can take and how fast he can get back.
For fishing, ask for Eric and take a half or full day trip out to the reef or back in the mangroves for a fun day. Eric will clean the fish at your dock and then off to El Divino for dinner.

If you want, there are lots of trips to the mainland for cave tubing, ruins tours and zip lining. Again, check with Frank and he can be a big help.

We always feel comfortable any place on Ambergris Caye, thesre is virtually no crime and the local folks are very friendly and willing to help when they can. We have never had a problem of any nature.

As you might expect, we love our time at Grand Colony and San Pedro. We always enjoy bringing folks with us and introducing them to everything there is to do, as well as just sitting on the front deck and watching the waves roll in and the world go by. Our little slice of paradise!

If you have not considred San Pedro and Amergris Caye and it's laid back life style, you should and when you do I suggest you consider Grand Colony for true luxury and convenience. Better hurry, San Pedro is still quaint and charming, but that too will change as time goes on.

Be aware that this wonderful set of villas is under new ownership. The times have changed and they do not own up to their obligations, including working with timeshare owners. Don’t trust them. They claim no units are available yet if you look online they are offering all kinds of enticements to get new people to come. DON’T.

Grand Colony is absolutely beautiful with gorgeous accommodations, a lovely pool and a nice beach area. You can also use all the amenities at the sister resort next door. Very peaceful and quiet and just a short walk to beach bars, restaurants and town. We rents a golf cart for the week which allowed us to explore the whole island and zip n and out of town and to do groceries as we needed.

We will be back!

It is not all-inclusive and in my opinion, you wouldn't want it to be. There are so many wonderful restaurants to try and each one is another fun experience to your vacation. Every server we have ever had in Belize is so friendly and fun. Honestly, i can't think of a bad experience. We always joke that the most "stress" we have every day is in deciding where to eat. Enjoy!
