Want to see and/or feed stingrays, seahorses, moray eels, pelicans, nurse sharks, and tarpons? Put happy hour at Iguana Reef on your Caye Caulker bucket list. The manager at Iguana Reef Inn made the habitat around his beach more conducive to marine life. For example, he made a seahorse nursery with rope. The animals are free to come and go; in the evenings he and guests offer them a sardine meal. It's a good time and a good home-grown conservation effort.
This was the best part of my vacation. It was unexpected for us to stay on Caye Caulker, and Iguana Reef was the highlight of the entire vacation. This is the first place we will go next time we come to Belize. It was such a romantic setting for my wife and I, and our kids loved this place. That's hard to find something that does so well with both. The owner was there onsite and had great stories. My kids fed the stingrays and pelicans by hand, we saw seahorses in his seahorse sanctuary, fed the tarpons, and the nurse sharks. It really was surreal.
We sadly did not get to stay here this year. COVID RUINED our plans. I will say that the amazing staff at the Iguana Reef Inn helped transfer our stay first from April to November then helped us cancle due to our delta flights being cancled. The staff was very helpful, friendly and full knowledge. Hopefully in 2022 we will be able to return and I wouldn't want to stay anywhere but at the Iguana Reef Inn purely by the way I was treated and the service they provided.
We visited the beach bar. The location is fabulous. Limited but adequate range of drinks available. Good place for a swim or use the water swings or hammocks or to watch the sunset. Rays can be seen from the peir. The feed the pelicans at sunset which is lovely to see (although some may find it a little alarming: they are big birds).
The bar has reasonable prices. The grounds are nice with a garden and palms. A seahorse sanctuary is out front. The issue I have is that the owner/manager is well know for poisoning local people's dogs and cats that wander onto his property. This is not hearsay but a known fact and he readily admits it. I would not go to this business again.
