This hotel has 2 address listings for some reason. I'm reviewing on both. If you book a room for 2 people, they expect you to pay an extra 200 quetzales per person that VISITS your room. So if you want to bring an additional friend over for 10 minutes, you must pay. If you switch the person you're going to share the room with, it's extra 200... Pretty ridiculous, but that's not the best bit. My friend and I were starving because we skipped dinner and it was near 1am. We asked them if we can leave the locked premises to get food for 1-2 hours, they said it's fine and just knock or ring the doorbell and they'd let us back in. Well, we got back and no answer, tried to call them, message them via the booking service, knock and rang the doorbell for 30 minutes with weird people around feeling a bit unsafe... Nothing. They didn't keep their word. We had to stay in the $2 per person hotel across the street with cockroaches around the room. pfff (This is not an exaggeration)

OK, it’s cheap and in a very convenient location for city centre sightseeing. However, it’s lacklustre, just about clean and the staff are civil but not friendly. The coffee available in the cafe area by reception is tolerable.

I stayed before change of ownership and about a two year lapse of going back. The old owners did nothing and it was an uncomfortable hotel, reason for the two year lapse. Went back and big change, for the better. I live in Guatemala and use this hotel quite frequently, good value for your money.

I recently stayed here 2 nights, a week apart as we traveled to Nebaj. The rooms were clean and quiet but basic. The staff doesn’t speak English but were very helpful and friendly. Our breakfast at the cafe was good. It is only a couple blocks to the walking mall Street with churches, shops and restaurants. It was nice to have something to do on our last night nearby. On my second stay, we had to leave by 5 a.m. for a flight. The night watchman opened the doors and stayed with us for twenty minutes until our ride came. It is not a long ride to the airport, only 88 Q or $12.00. I would stay here again.

I stayed one night with my girlfriend as we had a flight the next morning from Guatemala City. First of all we went to the wrong hotel as there is also a Hotel Ajau (not Colonial). A hotel staff showed us then the way to the Colonial just the next block. Staff is friendly and rooms are spacious and clean. We've been given room no 1 right next to the reception. It was really noisy till late and again very early in the morning. In the shower only cold water was available. As it was a hot it wasn't a big issue for me this day but generally not acceptable for this price. The bathroom was also a bit old and used (not dirty). In the end I think a bit pricy but with another room, not having the issues above, I think it's ok.

We stayed for one night at Hotel Ajau Colonial, and were very happy with it. The building itself is gorgeous with a sun lit courtyard with a fountain. The room had everything we needed, nice beds, TV and hot water in the bathroom. If we were to stay again for longer, maybe I'd spring for one of the more luxurious rooms - but for this we just needed something basic. I would definitely go back. Staff was friendly and helpful and they have a basic restaurant for breakfast and snacks.

Hotels are expensive in Guatemala city, so you don't really have many options. We stayed here a few times, if you ask people where you could stay they'll recommend you this hotel. Many people recommended me here. It is close to la sexta so you can go walk, and it is safe. Plus it is clean and has nice architecture.

Rooms are filthy and in a state of disrepair with broken furniture, lamps, wires sticking out, etc. Public bathrooms are disgusting, and the shower/bath facilities are therefore unusable. The first room we received had 1 bed that was rock hard (I could not press into it with 170+lbs of weight) and 1 bed that was incredibly soft (I sat and immediately sank to the springs). Staff is friendly but the combination of abysmal conditions and a pretty high $/night means that you should avoid this hotel.

We came to Guatemala on a budget and planned to see a lot for less. If you looking for high end this isnt the place as the high end hotels are in Zone 4 ranging from $90us-$250 a nite. If you looking for somewhere to get a quiet rest after site seeing for between$18-$50us then this is the place in Zone 1. It has 5 floors and no elevators so if you get a room anywhere from #301 to 510 the stairs are a killer. Small cafe downstairs has excellent local dishes. Yes the place is run down as it has seen its better days but the staff is exceptionally helpful to your needs.

Old school charm in the heart of Guatemala City. Comfortable & large rooms. Security door to street front. Free water, coffee & tea. Breakfast is not included but there is a cafe on site. The showers are freezing, otherwise ok for couples or groups. Also has good wifi. The last night was rather noisy with the hotel lending it's rooms to some pretty racy clientele. Not sure whether we'd stay again, service was fairly average and we're pretty over cold showers!
