Posada Belen is located in a fine colonial style home built in 1873 converted into an intimate Museum Inn, centrally located in a quiet street of the historical center of Guatemala City about 3 miles north from the airport (10-15 Minutes), run by the same family since opened in 1972 to international tourism. Posada Belen was slowly transformed from a colonial style home into a very special inn. Highly recommended in most important travel guides and by former guests/friends, with over 300 authentic registered Mayan artifacts on display as well as unique antique handicrafts plus many primitive paintings makes Posada Belen a true Museum, but most of all we are a clean, safe, centrally located, quiet, moderately priced, with good beds, great food, friendly relaxed atmosphere, and authentic HOME to start, end or organize your journey in Guatemala. We are conveniently located to visit any of the museums in Guatemala city, walk to the relief map, national palace, central market (lowest prices in the country for handcrafts), visit the pre classic Mayan ruins and museum of Kaminal Juyu, dozens of monumental churches , We are blocks away from the bus stations to Tikal, Xela, Antigua, Coban, Chiquimula, Rio Dulce. Etc. Shuttles are also available from the inn door. Guided walking City tour is available, Guatemala city is important if you really want to understand our culture and its history. We will be happy to help you with your itinerary and up to date travel and safety information. The Posada Belen is especially safe for women traveling alone. We have a pick up service available at any hour of day or night to all persons who will like to have a friendly and safe welcome into Guatemala's airport for about the same price as a taxi (depending on the arrival time from $10 to $15), we know we are not for everybody, our clients are usually smart people with lots of travel experience, who are looking for comfortably way to enjoy true Guatemalan culture and also likes to stay in a place with character.

Great place to stay! For me always a focal point when traveling through Guatemala! Francesca is a great hostess! I'll be back with you.
Nice rooms, good breakfast. With our booking we ordered our transfer from the airport. All very reliable and nice.
A safe haven in the troubled city centre.
The owner has many good tips!

My trip to Guatemala was wonderful, thanks to the caring and detailed assistance of Francesca and Rene the proprietors of the charming Posada Belen.

This was a wonderful base from which to journey to various places in Guatemala. Because Rene and Francesca both speak English, this gave me comfort since my Spanish is only pasable. They made all of my arrangements for me, which ensured a wonderful journey to places that were beyond my imagination.

In addition, the staff were attentive and caring. I looked forward to hearing them welcome me each time I retured. I will never forget them.

The food was fabulous and the location was within walking distance of banks, the Telgua office for phone cards, restaurants, the central market for arts and crafts as well as many historic buildings.

Because Guatemala City is like many large cities, one should take precaution while visiting. Fortunately the security system is very good at the Posada, thus ensuring a very safe environment. As a single woman traveling alone, this was important to me.

I know that one day I will return because a part of my heart remains at the beautiful Posada Belen in Guatemala City.

Do your self a favour if you are travelling to Guatemala, start and finish your holiday at the wonderfull Poseda Belen.
As an older woman travelling to Guatemala alone i was very fortunate to choose The Poseda Belen for my first week.
The Belen is a beautiful historic home [ only 10 rooms] spotlessly clean, tiled floors, an enchanting courtyard with fountain and resident turtles. The building is filled with traditional Guatemalan textiles, art works, and antiques.
The meals are exceptional, the best i had during my 4 weeks in Guatemala.
It is situated only about 15 minutes from the airport . Air pick up and delivery can be arranged. It is only a short walk to the old historic center, plenty to see and do. A tour of the area can be arranged if required. There is a very large market ajoining the center square, should you get carried away as i did and buy up big. The Belen have a baggage storage area, it was very convient for me to be able to leave my shopping and collect it when I spent the night before flying out.
The owners Rene and Francesca speak excellant english and could not have been more helpfull, what ever you would like to do or where ever you wish to go , they can arrange it.
The staff are very attentive and friendly, nothing is to much trouble, it is like being an honoured guest in a private home, yes a real home away from home atmosphere It is also nice and quite....no TV thank goodness.
It is a safe ,friendly place and sets the pace for a holiday in .this amazeing country.
Please contact me should you like any more information.

I just came back form 2 weeks in Guatemala, my intention was to use Poseda Belen as my home base, while I traveled. I was back in Guatemala City 2 times and on the third night I moved to another hotel. The prices at Poseda Belen are tourist prices, and the service is marginal. You can get a much better deal at any of the hotels in the area, or move to a large hotel in Zone 10. For example, a simple breakfast of eggs, toast and beans will cost you US $7.00. At any other restaurant or hotel this will cost US $3-4. Also, if you use their service to book a tour, they charge you a huge mark up - ditto on a taxi from the airport. While the manager, Felix, is quite nice, he cannot make up for the unreasonable owner, Franseca. Stay away from this hotel.

@ POSADA BELEN MUSEUM INN Our policy is always that the client is right, in over 30 years of existence we have had some bad luck with some clients but our guest book is filled with good comments since we try to care personally to the clients needs, it is not true however that breakfast is $7... unless you take some extras, (but is true you can always find cheaper and expensier places in the surroundings, ours price is $5 plus tax and is in the mid range, in Zone 10 hotels up to $12) Actually we have to unfortunately let Felix go because he and his son was the persons responsible to keep the good service and he was not a manager, after we took a course about small hotels service and management by OEA experts for small hotels (actually Francesca and I where in the 7 days course in late May) we decided to put the learning and more strict cross controls in practice, but naturally this changes was not easy accepted by our former employees. So we recently (July/04) change ALL the staff at once for more experienced, friendly and open to learn team. We really apologize this person and would like to have the opportunity to do it in person if he exists because we could not find any record of his existence in our files based in the info in your superb site, maybe you can let him/her know to contact us or give us their email or name, if he/she ever comes back to Guatemala, we offer him/her a BIG discount and free breakfasts. (unfortunately we were not able to find his registration or anyone from that State in the probable staying dates and we remmember all our guests, specially if there is a problem, request or complain It is true that we have to charge for phone calls and reservations done trough Us, but we invest a lot of time, phone and searching making sure our clients get as safe as they can be (we do not offer just a regular airport bus shuttle). so to get the best safetiest possible transfers from the airport is a priority thing, We PERSONALLY investigate the drivers we send to pick up our guests, but unfortunately they have to pay for parking while they wait at airport and often the flights get delay, so they have to charge for the time invested in waiting until the passager comes out the customs door and this is openly stated in our posadabelen web site. Plus our INN according to many other persons in fact is a VERY NICE 130 years old residence transformed into a hotel museum, artifacts in display and antiques make it specially authentic, and we also care a lot for the safety of our guests and artifacts, so we have invested in safety equipment, however our room prices had not change in 10 years. And yes we do have special fares for longer stays, but unfortunately some employee used to tell us he gave discounts and keeps the difference for himself so we decided that the discounts can be only be authorized by Us. In resume. Yes we are not a very cheap INN (SWB $29 + tax) but is not true that you will be safer or cheaper staying in Zone 10 hotels (check the last events page at the Guatemala US embassy web and you will see the Zone 10 is not safer than Zone 1 any more, because we have improve a lot the historical center safety http://usembassy.state.gov/guatemala/wwwhcrimee.html ) It is also true that we always have to improve our service so from July/04 we have changed all the staff (including Felix who I think wrote the bad revue) and add gourmet food to the menu. But is not true that our place is not nice, unless you do not enjoy the centenary colonial houses, friendly family run and lots of antiques with candle atmosphere and take a cup of wine in the patio surrounded by sculptures an art.

Guatemala is Wonderful and more safe than most U.S. Cities. If you are looking for luxury in Guatemala City, then go to the ritzy hotels in zone 10 and pay for it, but if you are looking for Guatemala and want to be treated like you are amoung friends, then go to the Pasada Belen.
My wife and I,(and other family and friends) don't go to Guatemala without starting out here.
It is small, quite and restful. Francessca and her staff will treat you like family. If you don't get what you want, then you didn't ask for it.
By all means, don't plan your trip in Guatemala without letting Rene book all of your trips. And for God's sake, ask Rene to have Guatemala's BEST guide,Victor(Bictor) Hugo, to take you ANYWHERE you want to go. He is wonderful and the ladies say that he is handsome.
They all speak good English and will bend over backwards to make sure that you have a great and safe trip.
We have been to Guatemala many times and will be going back in September.
E-mail me if you think that I can help you. Jay

The service at Posada Belen is excelent and the staff will make absolutely sure you enjoy your stay: from arranging an airport pickup (recomended) to a walking tour of the city center. The decoration is typical Guatemala and the food is good homecooking.
However, travellers should know that the city center (Zona 1) in Guatemala City is not safe. Tourists are recomended not to go walking at night and crime is definitely a problem.

My name is Eduardo Garcia and I have been in Posada Belen several times due to my job.
I work in training programs for small and medium business and take the Posada's services all the time.
The service is excellent and its owners Rene and Franccesca are very kind people.
If you travel to Guatemala and you want to stay in a family ambient, I recomend you La Posada Belen you will never regret.
Prices are reasonable and the place is comfortable and Colonial.
AH! Ask for the walking tour in the city and you will know the Historical Center. So much to see. This is the best place if you want to learn Spanish in the city.

I was in Guatemala for a period of 6 weeks from Jan. 5, 2007 until Feb. 17, 2007. I started my trip with the Posada Belen. I felt safe and secure when I got in late the first night and saw a driver holding my name in his hand. I was then greeted at the PB by Rafael.

What a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city! You step into a time machine back into 1871 and the bubbling fountain and 5 turtles around it just add to it. I felt warm and cozy in my room of mayan artifacts and woven linens. I liked the dining room that was set for one table to encourage guests to meet each other.

The owners, Rene and Francesca Belen, are part of my family now. Rene is an engineer but is quite knowledgeable about Mayan history since his father is an archeologist. Rene was born and raised in this colonial home and it eventually became a guest house. Francesca is a like a sister and she is well know around the country as a travel agent. I would pop back into the PB every 10 days for her to plan my next trip. I really want to thank her for getting me the best room in a nice hotel in Flores (which is my fav town in Gua). I had room 303 in Casa Azul with a huge roof top terrace overlooking the lake for only $30.

A note about the hot water; you turn it all the way on and count to 10 and then turn it slowly off. I actually got too hot and had to add cold.

The 4 guys that work at PB are fantastic. I want to thank Rafael, Enil, Juan and Daniel for making me feel welcome. Juan is a great cook and it was nice to have breakfast and dinner inside. I usually at lunch at the market or town square (10 min walk).

love to you all from Karin in Alaska
(estoy mucho frio!)

Posada de Belen is the perfect place to start your trip in Guatemala. I have just been there and it is an unique hostal in Guatemala. It is not impersonal like any hotel, it has many antiques, staff is extremely nice and the price is more then reasonable.
I also recommend the tours offered by Posada de Belen, namely to the jungle.

i've been busy since my trip to guatemala in january, but i feel i have to share the great experience i had staying at the posada belen.
it was a last minute decision to go to guatemala and i had just a couple of nights before my trip to look for a place and make my reservations.
this place had everything i wanted and needed. it may not be in a nice area but it was quiet and safe. it was an old building in the historical center of guatemala city...exactly what i wanted. i prefer staying in small places, and needed a place that offered airport pickup/drop off, has wifi, and served breakfast and this place had all these.
from the moment i arrived until the day i left i never had a problem. the staff at the inn was very warm in welcoming me. i felt at home right away. i am not sure if it was because it wasn't full but i had the whole room with 3 beds to myself...and the room was huge. i also had the chance to check the other rooms and no two rooms looked the same...they were all decorated beautifully, the whole place was just amazing. they have a huge collection of antique pieces of furniture, displays and paintings.
i didn't have time to read and find out what i wanted to see and just made sure i spend some time with francesca, the owner of the inn, when i got there. she made the calls and also gave me suggestions of what i can do and see in 3 days. aside from that we had a really good conversation which lasted for hours. it seemed like we've known each other forever!
if you need someone to drive you to a restaurant or anywhere in the city, a tour guide, or if you want to go on a day trip to antigua or a few days to visit the mayans you just need to let her know. she knows who to contact. she's such a nice lady...you will love her!
the staff - very nice, friendly, and accommodating. they made sure you're enjoying your stay. breakfast was good. i always had the tipico, although there were other choices. there was so much food it lasted me till dinner. i went on a day trip to antigua and didn't get back to the hotel until 9pm. when they found out i didn't have dinner yet they made sure i didn't go to bed hungry.
although the staff spoke very little english, and my spanish was 'un poquito' i enjoyed my small talks with them when i was either in the dining hall or the courtyard. you don't even have to look or call them if you need anything...they're always there waiting for you.
if this is going to be your first trip to guatemala city make sure to also ask francesca about the city walking tour. francisco, the tour guide she contacted was very knowledgeable and interesting. it's worth it!
i was able to do and see a lot in 3 days and still had a relaxing trip. thanks to francesca and her wonderful staff. i will never forget my stay at the posada belen. i went with no clue what to expect and came home with lots of memories. i will definitely be back.
