Let's face it--Khao San Road is a gong show. Luckily, the Shambara's location is quietly tucked away in an alley, about a 30-second walk away. That 30 seconds makes a world of difference! The rooms are smallish, but they're comfortable and very clean. Bathrooms are shared, but there are enough showers and stalls.

I stayed in this hostel for 1 night with a fellow traveller. We shared a twin room with Aircon and the toilets and showers were communal. The room itself was a little on the small side (i had a large rucksack and had to sleep with it on the bottom of my bed so that we could get out of... More

the shambara boutique hostel is the perfect place to stay in bangkok. very unique, very quiet, very romantic. there are only few very lovely (but little) rooms upstairs and enough toilets and showers for everyone. it's very private and safe. the shambara backyard is also very nice. the location is perfekt - only few steps and you are standing right... My boyfriend and I stayed at the Shambara Boutique for 3 nights in June of last year. The hostel was very easy to find, just at the top end of Th Khao San tucked away from all the noise and hustle. Our room was one of the first you get to as you came up the stairs, we had a... More

Though I had some minor complaints, they were all outweighed by just how charming this place was. As far as hostels go, it is very pretty to look at. And it is remarkable just how serene the place was given its proximity to the hustle and bustle of Khao San Road. The crowd when I was there in August 2006... More

stayed here for our first 2 nights in bangkok and it was the perfect place to escape the madness and noise. although just off koh san road, the hostel was so peaceful-helped greatly by a cool outdoor seating area. food there was great and excellent value for money. the rooms were small, enough room for bed and bags but did... Shambara is surprisingly quiet although it is just off Khao San Rd. The rooms are extremely small and I could only just fit my suitcase in. The showers and toilet were quite clean. It is a good place for a temporary stay, however I think you might go mad from the claustrophobic feeling of the rooms! The outside garden area... More

Wonderful little Hostal in the back of Kao San Road!! Unfortunately we spent at least 1 hour to found the hostel in the beginning - the map-description is a little bit confusing...but then ... we found this unique place in a little "street" 1 second from the Kao San Road! One morning I bought my water in the pyjama;-) Very... More

We paid about $22 for a double room with air con. The room was small but clean, the shared toilet facilites were very good and the shower was good and hot! The highlight of this hostel is its patio garden where you can unwind after a night out in Bangkok or a morning of seeing temples. Complimentary breakfast of coffee... More

Staying in Banglamphu

Neighbourhood Profile
Banglamphu
While you’ll see skyscrapers in most parts of Bangkok, it’s the gilded roofs of ancient pagodas that adorn the skyline of Banglamphu, the city’s historical and most touristic district. Hordes of tourists flock to this area to tick quite a few must-see attractions off their to-do list, with the Grand Palace being the most spectacular of them all. Banglamphu is also home to Bangkok’s infamous tourist ghetto, centered around Khao San Road. Visit at night to feast on road-side pad thai, cheap beers and if you’re up for it, some dancing fueled by buckets of Thai whiskey.
