The location was highly convenient for it is right next to the St. Joseph Cathedral and walking distance to other tourist locations, including restaurants and bars. Overall, we enjoyed our relaxing stay at the hotel and the service provided by the staff members made it a 5-star stay! They were extremely helpful providing resources in terms of transportation, tourist attractions, and even helped us on some matters that required translation. We enjoyed our stay and will never forget this wonderful experience!
The pros are that it is one of the loveliest and quietest locations in Hanoi whilst still being close to everything. Very very cute views from the rooms at the front. Not very expensive, Yummy breakfasts made to order!
The only con would be the view of a brick wall in the breakfast room but really it doesn't matter for such a brief time and it makes it quieter!!
Quiet at night except for the hourly ringing of the cathedral bells - and the 5am mega-ring that apparently lasts several minutes. Brian the manager is a cool and knowledgeable guy when you can catch him, and the rest of the staff is good. The hotel location is *very* good, quite close to plenty of trendy restaurants. Unfortunately Joseph's has work to do.
By the way, Joseph's is one of the many affordable Vietnamese hotels that requires holding your passport as collateral during your stay. Personally I hate this. It's a huge safety risk if you're in - say - a street crash and need to be rushed back to your home country (or anywhere else) for treatment.
The location was very convenient.
The next morning I found another hotel. The hotel is owned by a guy from New Zealand named Brian. He was a nice guy and when he saw me he said that he heard I was not happy about the room. When I told him the problem, he agreed with me that he too would be really pissed off. He offered to comp the room if I would stay for more night, but I had already booked another hotel. So I ended up paying for the one night.
I moved to another hotel in Old Town called Maison D’ Hanoi. It was much nicer, but the room had no windows. I would recommend not staying in Old Town because all of the hotels are crammed into the old “tunnel” style buildings that are very long and narrow. If there is a window it’s going to be overlooking a noisy busy street. If you stay at a hotel outside of this congested area you will have more space, and some peace and quiet. If you want to walk around old town its a $3.00 taxi fare.
Even for being in the middle of the city and close to everything you need, the hotel still is in a small and quiet street with almost no traffic. But as soon as you go around the corner you have all the shops, spots and places you need in front of you. Just a few minutes walking away is the famous St. Joseph cathedral built in 1887. At the same distance is the Hoan Kiem lake which is the perfect place for morning gymnastics, or just watch the locals doing Tai Chi in the morning, and relaxing at any time of the day on one of the many benches.
Not a very welcoming environment at all.
Located in Old Quater directly beside St. Joseph's Church this hotel sits on a side street (many hotels do in the Old Quarter), and is clearly used as a short cut to access other areas with moto's speeding recklessly. You had better look twice before stepping out the front door of the hotel.
The rooms are clean but pretty basic, I expected more at this price point in Vietnam as I did enjoy better accommodations at much lower prices in other cities while traveling the country. The common area's on the lobby level are clean and well maintainted but that's were it stops. Hallways and stairwells could use a good scrub to take care of the scruffy appearance. There were also maintenance issues in my room. The curtain was falling off the track. Furnature veneer was chipped and missing on the desk, wardrobe and in front of the mini bar. Little or no care was taken the last time the room was painted with many of the baseboard tiles having paintbrush marks. The table and chairs outside on the balcony are very dirty and overly worn to the point of being dangerous and the P-trap in the bathroom sink was not attached so I had dirty water all over the floor the first time I used the sink (I attached the P-trap myself). While I appreciated a larger room at the back of the hotel, these rooms are directly beside the elevator shaft so the noise can be a nuiscance.
Breakfast is very good but be aware the breakfast room is very small (4 tables) and if all the tables are occupied you'll have to wait or go elsewhere.
Like I mentioned, the servie at this property is excellent. Maintenance issues is were they fall short so unfortunately in this review I have to give this hotel only a passing grade.
