Surprisingly, and pleasantly, the management had upgraded me to an apartment room(suite) for a sharply reduced standard king rate. In the end I used very few of the amenities but had I been in the mood, I could have washed my clothes and cooked my meals while watching BBC in one room and CNN in another(or 2 different movies if I preferred).
Hospitality cart - management came around to the rooms twice while I was there with complimentary drinks for all rooms. This was a nice touch.
The bed was very comfortable but maybe a bit hard for some. The apartment was a bit warm at night, and while I turned down the thermostat on the wall heaters this didn't actually change the temperature much. On a couple of nights I opened the windows and let the -32C air cool everything off. Lots of electric outlets in both rooms of the apartment - a nice bonus compared to other hotels I have stayed in.
The large room had a couch, guest chair, desk and chair, etc with the adjoining dinette area. I held several meetings in the sitting area. The WiFi was excellent. Every floor had 2 networks. I was even able to connect to the open network in the hotel next door! Too funny.
So what was the downside? The bathroom required up to 10 minutes to get hot water for the shower. And there were days that the shower was cut short by loss of hot water. They had no fix. The floor drain in the bathroom allowed the sewer smells to back up into the room. Not every day but every other day. Again - no fix available. I did get some bleach and poured it down the drain which helped a lot. With poor public infrastructure I suppose the hotel does the best it can - but it is really unpleasant to return to a room that smells like s*&t until you air it out.
The least responsive staff were in the restaurant during breakfast. They offered coffee 1 out of 4 or 5 days. They never asked if I wanted eggs cooked to order, I had to hunt them down and make my request. This is a customer service area that could really improve. My second week they had come to know me and were better.
I intend to return in June and will gladly stay at the Corporate again. I would gladly give a higher rating if the bath issues disappeared.
Further, the hotel arranged a reliable car service to the airport for the late night departure. Room was basic - but very clean and tidy. Linens were fresh and new. Toiletries were nice. Location is near the main government square and the associated tourist sites - less the 6 minutes walking - also several bars, restaurants and other support services (post office, airlines, etc.). Hotel restaurant was okay - friendly staff.

On the positive side, the hotel is in a great, central location. On the negative side, the room is very cold (even using a fan heater and wearing four layers of clothing) and my request for another heatrer fell on deaf ears. The room is very dark, making it impossible to read or work in the evenings. There is a lot of loud noise each night (sounds like a disco). Many of the electrical plugs don't work.
I found the food OK, but nothing special. There is no ATM but there is one in the neighbouring Bayangol hotel.
Everything smells like cigarettes, people smoke all over the hotel (and all over UB). I've tried to go to the sauna 3 times in 3 days, it's been closed or "reserved" everytime and the lady at the desk will never give me a definitive answer on when I can use it. The day we arrived after a 12 hour trip from China via Korea at about 7pm the restaurant and room service were closed for the night while the hotel staff partied with pounding music until midnight. The techno music from the club in the hotel is currently pounding again at 10pm, presumably until midnight.
The breakfast buffet: baked beans/potatoes/steamed veggies/hot dog sausages- all ice cold. I asked someone to heat up my plate. 10 minutes later I had to flag them down (in the empty restaurant) to ask for it back. That pretty much sums up the service here- everyone seems nice but they just don't know from service. You have to go find someone for anything- tea, coffee, bowls, glasses and they act like the restaurant is closed or something. There is an omelette station which is fine, and some cereal with nuts and dried fruit and some juices. There is a little salad but everyone has advised not to eat raw veggies because it is probably washed in tap water which you can't drink.
The shower head in the 2 rooms I've seen won't stay up so it just hangs down against the wall and is about 5 feet high so I shower crouched against the wall, which is very refreshing when it's minus 30 outside.
I asked at the desk about changing Chinese RMB for the local currency: they offer 120T for 1 RMB, "we're not a bank" she said. I asked if the rate was the same at the hotel next door, she said yes. I decided to check. The hotel next door (20 feet away) offers 190T for 1 RMB. That's more than 50% more than the Corporate is offering!
The desk did call a cab for us, so that's something. Like I said, they seem nice but sort of clueless as far as service goes. There is free wifi and a medium sized, smelly gym that is open 24/7.
UB in december is unbelievable - minus 30 degrees F, more smoke than a forest fire outside, horrible traffic with huge potholes every 2 feet and uber aggressive drivers, so this hotel may be considered luxury compared to what people are used to here but if you are expecting anything like a typical, solid 3 star hotel you will be in for a surprise. I'd check on the room they give you before unpacking your suitcase.
