Some more practicalities: there is a small supermarket next door, as are the main buildings of National and Technical University of Mongolia. Several of the nearby restaurants are among the better in UB. Personally I love Namaste which is a 2 min walk in the same street. Sukhbaatar Square is a short walk, as are many embassies, several museums. It is about 20 min walking distance to the State Department Store.
When we were shown to our room the man asked to help us with our bags was lying on a couch in reception watching TV. The receptionist I think was asleep by the reception desk.
We were shown to our room which had an unflushed toilet, a bed with blood stains on it and when my boyfriend opened the wardrobe door it fell on top of him.
After moving rooms we got a better room which still had dirty floors with an iron imprint and dirty curtains.
We were brought some water a little while later and thanked the gentleman who had brought it. We assumed it was complimentary, until we tried to leave a few days later and we were told it was not and that we had to pay. This might not have been so bad but it was 5am in the morning and we had a taxi waiting to take us to the airport. We had expressly asked th night before if we had any outstanding bills to avoid such an issue and were told by the receptionist it was fine.
In our annoyance we tried to leave and he shouted at us and locked the doors. We had to pay. It was not the amount but the principle.
I have now travelled the world and stayed in many places. This was the worst ever. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
I stayed in this hotel in March 2012.
After 22 hours of travel my father and I arrived at midnight on a Saturday to a receptionist who spoke no English. After failing to communicate to this receptionist we had a booking he went and woke up the manager. The manager spoke a very minimal amount of English but we finally managed to get our room.
We trudged up 4 flights of stairs and opened our door to room 404. Immediately we were assaulted by paint fumes and it's no wonder as there were an abundance of small and one large stains on the old carpet.
The room was dirty with dead bugs on the floor and when I opened a draw I found 4 empty beer cans from a prior guest! I was dieing for a shower, not caring if it was hot or cold. The pressure was very low but hey its Mongolia. However when I tried to position the shower head it fell off and It wouldn't go back on.
Tired and grumpy at the room I decided to just have a bottle of water and go to bed. However when I checked the promised mini bar the fridge was non functional and empty. This to me was a terrible stuff up, in a country where the tap water is undrinkable it is imperative that there is drinkable water in the room.
I just gave up and crawled into the rock hard bed and fell into a restless sleep. At 5:30am I was woken up by a very disgruntled father who had rolled over onto something hard and had found out he had slept with a lipstick and an (thankfully) unopened condom. Obviously the linen had not been changed from the previous guests which is absolutely disgusting in my opinion.
We went down to breakfast with low expectations and low spirits. The breakfast was yet again a disappointment, there was no plates and we had to ask, the eggs and bacon were cold, the yogurt had to be asked for and there was no toaster. The waiter didn't want to know us and was very slow to respond to requests.
This was our first night of a supposed 5 nights before we left on our tour so we bit the bullet and decided to move to the Ulaanbaatar Hotel which is a 5 star hotel but only cost $20 more a night!
Trying to get a refund was a nightmare and is still being worked out.
The reason it was so bad was the cost of the room and this is largely due to intrepid tacking on an extra $75 AUD on the room rate but even without that the problems are glaring and need to be addressed. It is not suitable for western tourists if they plan to charge what they do.
Good location, comfortable bed, hot water, very good heating... All that for just 25$ !!!
And the staff is great too !

The place is located in just on the outside on the city centre and UB is not big, so everything is walk able. You are in the centre within 5 minutes. So no fear.
What can I say that is good about this hotel? The staff. They are very friendly and hospitable, they are very well mannered to a high level. The problem with the staff though.... well.. not really a problem.. but there is a set breakfast which you can choose from and it is included in the hotel stay. The thing is, lets say that each morning, if you ordered a cheese sandwich, you would get a different cheese sandwich each day.. so I think they just let whoever is in the kitchen at the time make the breakfast. Either way, the sausages are something like I have never tasted before. I do not know what they are made of, and I don't want to know... I just like how sometimes they are chopped, sliced, whole or even frozen.. yes.. frozen.
The rooms... should probably be simply done over. The carpet in the rooms was worn out and terrible with stains. The curtains were almost falling apart and the bathroom had more mould around the edges than I have ever seen... it was quite disgusting.
The beds are terrible. Hard and uncomfortable.
There is also some sort of pool/snooker hall or something out the back of the hotel, and that got quite rowdy some nights. Even got to witness a fight of some sorts... cops showed up and sorted it out of course.. gotta love the views from hotels sometimes.
Just up the road is a great internet store so you can go internet.. cross the road and head up the road maybe 100m.. don't take the one on the same side as the hotel.. it is useless. There is also a small bar/restaurant right next door to the hotel, it is OK, but do not be fooled by the "schnitzel".. it is actually just a bread crumbed hamburger pattie...
Please stay here just once so I can have someone to talk to about this hotel.. I think the staff try really hard and I think they just need to do the hotel up a bit. To be fair there was some renovations going on, so perhaps... just perhaps...
Anyways, the hotel is cheap and good enough for a short stay... I did it twice.. so go on.. I dare ya!
The room was small and smelly, the bathroom was dirty...sub standard for a three star hotel as advertised. The room was overpriced at $50.00USD. I ended paying $100.00USD and it feels like robbery.
