Detailed Reviews
The rooms were nice overall, the hotel's decent for the price, but I had problems with the noise because they put me right next to the live music bar. It was interesting to see the live music there, but can you imagine trying to sleep next to it? It was loud!
If you stay there ask for rooms that are far from the bar. I am not sure how often they have live music concerts there.
Otherwise, the room was huge, some parts seemed a little worn out, the carpet seemed a little grimy and etc, but they tried to decorate it nice. The shower was nice, I remember.
Overall, average. I'd even say it was good. I don't know if they have breakfast there.
I don't expect much in UB anyway.. I was just in transit for the desert.

The Whitehouse in UB is a nice, clean and spacious hotel worth going to. The staff was friendly and helpful for the most part. It has three attached restaurants, all of which are reasonably good. There is live music in the evening at one of them as well. The only issues we had were that they put us in a special "Romantic" room directly across from the elevator - so we needed to be asked to be moved to a more quiet and private area - this was to be a romantic night, not an uptight one. The TV did not work, though they did kind of check it out twice, but did not replace it. And, one of the waters walked right into the room without letting us let him in and we were both naked! However, excepting these issues, I would actually return here again. The food was nice and so were the staff.

We stayed here for four nights in three different rooms. The hotel rooms are livable and clean although the finishings are outdated and worn, the carpet especially. The beds were hard, but I was still able to get a good night's rest. The breakfast in the morning was decent. They had an assortment of cereals, juices, eggs (fried and scrambled), meats, yogurt, salads, rice, coffee (instant), tea, and some fruit (very little and sliced). The staff of the hotel were nice and helpful. There is also a "supermarket" across the street. It has mostly packaged goods and some toiletries. We bought bottles of water there. Not much in terms of fresh fruits and veggies. Each room comes with a hairdryer, an electric kettle, instant coffee, tea, two complimentary water bottles (small size), and toiletries. The hotel also has three restaurants. We didn't eat at any. We preferred to eat dinner at the Ramada down the street when we didn't feel like going far (the food there was good - has veggie options). My biggest recommendation for someone staying here is try not to get a room by the night club. We stayed in room 307 the first night and that was directly above the club. The music was very, very loud. Too loud for a good night's sleep even with earplugs. The club doesn't close until 2am. The next night we moved to another room, 301, which was on the other side of the hotel and we didn't hear anything. Overall, it was an okay hotel. It worked for us because we spent very little time there.

Groups of aggressive and threatening men/pick-pockets linger outside waiting to target tourists and passers-by for money. My family and I were repeatedly threatened and approached both outside of the hotel and in the reception – the doorstaff did nothing to help. We saw a number of other incidents around the hotel. This is a dangerous area to stay as a foreigner.

We had a big comfortable room with a huge TV. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice. Internet available in hotel business centre. We only had one evening to try the hotel's restaurants. We chose the Korean. Staff spoke no english but helped us choose from the illustrated menu and indicated which dishes were very spicy. Food was first class. We were on a tour so had coach to take us around. Were not impressed with the city and the traffic is horrendous but the hotel's central location was ok.

We stayed two nights at White Hotel. The rooms were large and reasonably clean although the finishing was three star quality rather than what one would expect in a Western Hotel. The location is OK and walk-able distance to the centre of town. The real item that brought this hotel down was breakfast. Food is poor at best and never enough. Hotel guests were almost fighting over toast which came out a few pieces at a time and never enough. Once items such as the 4 cups yogurt run out then that it is and you miss out. Breakfast is available until 10.00AM but by 8.30 they are out of most food and that is it. Possibly the worst breakfast I have had in all my travels.

Our room obviously hadn't been touched since whenever the hotel was built. Chairs had no stuffing so you sunk into the frame, bed was beyond hard with ridges and lumps and you could see where the edging was completely worn away, pillows meager, thick dust in places, carpet, especially in front of bathroom, marked and worn,. A/C extremely loud, didn't really work and when you turned the bedside lights off it went off! So the only way of any fresh air was the door on the tiny balcony which of course you cant leave open at night due to traffic noise.
Bathroom is huge and clean with shampoos etc. Very dim lighting. Hot water was random...some days brilliant and hot, others tepid to cold.
Housekeeping was a bit hit and miss as they didn't always replace items such as tea bags or glasses. We only had 1 towel on arrival and thank goodness for google translate or we wouldn’t have been given another!
There seems to only be one restaurant now even though there are adds everywhere for others. Dinner was nice, we had Mongolian food. Breakfast you have a choice of 2 western menus or a Korean set menus. Very average breakfast and often things were not available.
Front desk staff friendly and helpful but everyone else seemed grumpy. Not a prime location for cafes and a bit of a walk to see the sights.Handy to the train station. WiFi was free but poor.
Basically a hotel should provide a decent bed and a hot shower at the least no matter its rating, this hotel failed on both accounts. I would look elsewhere if I ever return to Ulaanbaatar

Our "standard double" room was huge, with a giant bathroom (complete with tub and separate shower) and beautiful carpets and beds and wallpaper. One night at three in the morning a band started practicing (seriously: electric guitar, drums, vocals) two floors below us, but after I complained at the desk they immediately quit. They also provide you with multiple water bottles each day. As an American, beware that there is no AC here, though. (This is entirely typical for the region.)

Probably not up to the standards of the Whitehouse of the Clintons, Bushes, or Obamas, but still a decent hotel. When it first opened 15 years ago or so, this hotel was a fabulous break from the big, cold places like Chinggis Khaan and UB Hotel, and a great value. Since then, lots of new places have popped up, offering similar good value. Whitehouse Hotel is still a good hotel though, if you're not too demanding of luxury. Fairly reliable room and cleanliness. Quite OK, especially if on a limited budget.

"Standard (half-lux) rooms on the corner of the building have a good cross flow with windows open. Only draw back is the city noise and exhaust smell. Spring for the delux room, you'll be glad you did."Read full review
