Back again at the Epos Had a big corner suite with anteroom this time which is convenient for having consultations and entertaining visitors. Definitely not LA any more, but never mind at least you know you are somewhere else. Staff on duty and sleep in the lobby like dormice bundled up in camel hair blankets. Egg on toast for breakfast and yogurt. You cant beat the winter rates. I was the only guest. But you can walk anywhere in downtown UB from here easily. Bayarlala to the Epos ;-)

Epos is a friendly, user friendly and unpretentious pensione in the diplomatic district of central Ulaanbaatar. Rooms are modest in size but contain everything one needs, en suite bathroom, etc. The staff are very helpful and glad to see you. Breakfast is quite good and they do eggs to order. There is a small restaurant in the hotel for lunches and dinner. Across the street is Rosewood a very nice California style restaurant that caters to diplomatic types. Laundry is good and efficient. Cost is reasonable compared to other decent hotels in UB. But don't bather asking for extra pillows that doesn't quite compute yet. On the whole an excellent value in my opinion. Surrounding building s are finished out now so no construction site vibe as in the past.

This hotel is not brand new but is in good condition. There is a language barrier with most of the guests and they but you can easily get by. The breakfast is interesting, they just don't get a western breakfast but is interesting every morning. The location is really good, a couple of blocks away from the peace ave. and in the middle of the embassy row. Just like most of the Mongolian small hotels, if you come home too late you will have to wake up the staff that is sleeping in the hotel lobby. Also the front desk will answer questions in what you are looking for in the city, and set you up for tours or anything that you need. We spent 6 days at this hotel and if I decide to go back to UB I will probably stay here again.

The Epos hotel is centrally located. You can walk almost anywhere in Ulan Bataar (UB). The breakfasts were predictable and scant. Typically, an egg, some bread/jam, and some sort of meat. Not really enough to keep you going until lunchtime. The rooms are "tired" and need a bit of updating, but there was hot water in the shower and fresh towels each day. Our room had a separate sitting area. The beds were not very comfortable and took a bit to get used too (but the linens were clean). The value for the price of the room was ok. Although breakfase was included in the price, you might consider walking just outside to the Rosewood for a good coffee and decent food.

I was planning on staying here for a month, but eventually I moved to the much more up to date Edelwiess hotel across the road from Epos. The staff were friendly and helpful to accommodate my vegetarian foibles (after the first breakfast was a plate of fried salami). But eventually I left and moved over the road as my room smelled of smoke, I tried to open the window to get some fresh air in, but the window came off in my hand. Also they seem to save money by having the hotel in darkness most of the time, so it became a bit depressing. It was $49 for a night including breakfast and the wifi was good. Very very comfortable bed and good pillow! I recommend going to the hotel over the road... unless you like stale smoke in which case this is right up your street!

I stay at the Epos Hotel every time I visit Ulaanbaatar (UB), about twice a year. By American standards the hotel is about a two-star hotel with four-star service. If you are looking for a small, clean, safe hotel in UB, I recommend you consider the Epos. It is an older building that is well kept, with high quality staff. The service is excellent. From the moment you walk in until you leave the staff work to make you feel relaxed and comfortable at the Epos. The staff members are responsive to guests’ needs and willing to help you with diverse needs that make your stay enjoyable. For example, I always ask the staff to order a taxi for me to go to the airport and help agree on the price before I leave. This usually saves about $25 compared to what I have heard others pay from central UB (sometimes more). I originally stayed at the Epos because it is close to the medical university where I consult. The Epos was the third small hotel I stayed at in UB and my favorite of the three. By far it is the most attentive to my wants and needs. The rooms are simple and clean. The carpet is a bit worn but similar to that seen in the other hotels I have stayed at in UB. The mini-refrigerator in the room is stocked with the usual fare – water, sodas, juice, alcohol and snacks. The prices are reasonable (about $1 for water or soda!). Wireless internet is available for free and usually available. The best reception is on the first two floors. The hotel is located near several embassies (eg, Japan, South Korea), the medical university and both the tertiary hospital for Mongolia and the primary foreign hospital (known as the Korean hospital). Epos is about a thirty minute walk from the central square. Most site-seeing in UB is scattered so short (and inexpensive) taxi rides are the norm regardless of where you stay. Just bring a hotel card so the drivers can get you home at night. I am loyal to the hotel because during a rare uprising in 2008 related to elections I found myself at the Epos acutely ill. In this very difficult situation the staff took care of me while I was alone for a day (at the time and all city streets were closed). Challenging times provide insight into the quality of an organization. The Epos staff members were very attentive to guests under such difficult circumstances. Fortunately, all other visits have been uneventful. Thus, my colleagues and I enjoy starting the day with breakfast at Epos and return to a place we find welcoming and comfortable at the end of long days.
