we have stayed at this hotels for a couple of nights and have found it very good. The English speaking reception staff are very helpful. When we've been lazy they have ordered us taxis from a generally reliable company. Remember where you are though and always make sure the meter is reset and visible. The bus route into the centre is very frequent and only 500t for any length of journey. There is an ATM and bank next door to the hotel. There is also a bakery next door with lovely fresh cakes !
We didn't do any of the tours that are available from the various companies as it didn't seem worth it and on reflection we were right not to. We did want to go to the large Ghengis Khan statue and the hotel found us a nice guy who drove us there and back for 50$. It 50k each way.
The breakfast was different every day and very nice.
Choose your room carefully of course as the Peace Ave is very noisy as can be the karaoke, but not that bad.
The bed was good and large, the shower was good and hot. There is a kettle in the room.

After seeing the pretty bad reviews of some of the supposedly high-end hotels in UB I decided to take my chances with one of the lesser known ones. New West made a good first impression - a huge room (with a separate sitting and sleeping area), clean, modern and pretty comfortable. The downsides - non-existent service since not a single person (incl the front desk staff) spoke any english; weak wifi signal (this seems to vary room by room), no english TV channels. I had breakfast included in the rate but gave it a miss as the staff in the breakfast room didn't speak or understand any english, and the piece of bread and jam with instant coffee and hot water they showed in front of me wasn't too appealing (they might have had other options if one was able to communicate with them). The hotel is within walking distance (well, sort of) of the city centre... weather permitting (some 25 min walk). Cabs are impossible to find on the street and calling a cab company usually results in getting an operator who speaks no english. No to mention, UB traffic jams are terrible, so walking proved to be quite a convenient option, most of the time. :)
Overall, this hotel offers very good value for money for (mostly overpriced) UB. If all you need is a comfy and spacious room, this one will do the trick.

We arrived at the train station before 7:00 a.m. with the promised taxi there to meet us. We were allowed check-in at 7 a.m. with breakfast included. The reservations manager Munkhbayar Purev offered to change our room when seeing two males checking in however the room had extra living quarters so change was not necessary but the point is that he offered above standard service on his own accord. The air-conditioning unit was not working when we checked in but without needing our prompting the bell boy changed the unit immediately. The room was huge with a king sized bed and extra living quarters. The reception and restaurant ladies were excellent. I know not everyone will get the same staff but the receptionist, Bilguum, was an absolute jewel. Her English is very good and she was able to offer help, advice, exchange money, call taxis and provide recommendations for various activities in Ulan Bator. Khandaa and Saruu were perfect waitresses, thank you ladies for the great service. The room was clean and the breakfasts were ample. They also have a very good restaurant on the premises. Depending on the time of day it is a 10-20 minute taxi ride to the main town square, Sükhbaatar Square formerly (Chingghis Khan Square) and a 3 -10 minute drive to the train station. When checking out early 4 days later we received a bagged breakfast for the road. Considering value for money and the service minded management and staff I fully recommend this hotel for travellers looking for a comfortable stay without entertainment amenities. Thank you Mr. Purev for providing a well run hotel which made our stay most pleasant

Rooms were dated and worn and there was a musty smell. A lot of the hostels I stayed in were nicer. Wifi isn't the best and the towels were wet. The bathroom flooded when we used the shower. It definitely wasn't one I could recommend other than budget.

This is our first experience of my friend and I to be in Ulaanbaatar to support our son's in a FIBA Asia Championship from 17-26Aug. We stayed there for 7 nights in a deluxe room with kitchen. The room is spacious, clean & comfortable and the staffs are nice and helpful. With the Wi-fi in our room made our stay is just closer to our family. Breakfast can be served in our room. Our regular trip to Buyant-Ukhaa arena was well arranged by front desk. We love to stay in this hotel with warm environment.

We stayed here on our arrival in U.B, as it seemed a reasonably priced option. We wanted the comforts of a hotel rather than hostel at the start of our trip as we were spending the next few weeks motorcycling & camping around Mongolia.
The photo's are NOT as it actually is, certainly not as funky as it would lead you to believe. The room we were allocated was at the front of the hotel overlooking Peace Avenue. The problem here was that during the summer months it's very hot & there was no fan so we had to open the window, which then lets in all the dust & noise, leading to a rather sleepless night or two. When you walked in, the room stunk of what I can only describe as pee! You may ask why we didn't ask to change rooms, but after a long haul flight, having unpacked everything & the fact we were only staying a couple of nights, we just stayed put.
The rooms on the surface appeared clean, but dig beneath & you'll see they are not cleaned very well. I had dropped something down the back of the bedside table. When retrieving said object I found fag butts & all sorts down there. Don't look under the beds either!
Not all bad though; the staff were absolutely lovely (as are most Mongolians) & very helpful. There are also kettles in the room which is a bonus. The hotel also kindly let us store our suitcase while we went on our adventure. On our return we stayed at another hotel pretty much next door, which was cheaper & didn't have one price for Westerners (just because I'm a Westerner doesn't mean I'm rich!) & another for locals. There are loads of hotels in U.B, all of a similar nature, so I think for the money they charge, they should be making more of an effort & getting it right. We have travelled alot & stayed in some right flea pits around the world, but if I'm paying more I expect something better than this.
My advice to the manageress:
- make sure the rooms are better cleaned (pull out tables etc.)
- clean the carpets now & again
- make sure the remote controls are working
- offer a fan in rooms over summer
- same price for everyone
Mongolia is an amazing place with amazingly friendly people. I'd go back again, but not here I'm afraid!

We have stayed in this hotel 2 times for a period of more than 2 weeks each time. It is a very clean hotel and the staff is so willing to help. It is like staying with the family. I recommend this hotel.

The hotel is very nice and the rooms are generous and cozy. The food in the restaurant is good and also the included breakfast. The staff is giving a great effort, but many things are not organized well, e.g. you don't get any food in the restaurant at 8pm although the opening hours are until 10pm, breakfast should be from 8am but kitchen staff only arrives at 8.10, in some rooms you get free water, in others you don't, etc. wifi works not bad, but interrupts quite often.

We stayed at New West for five nights and during that time we ate in the adjoining 'Sprout Restaurant' at least once a day as the food was simply delicious. The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful, everything we asked for was done quickly, efficiently and always with a smile. I would recommend this hotel as it is affordable and super clean. The rooms are spacious and quiet with good wifi and TV channel selections. The city centre is a 5 min taxi ride but taxis are so cheap in UB it makes sense to pay less on your room and taxi into town whenever you need to.
