Detailed Reviews

Average but well located. Double room with tiny bed, only 1 mug, 1 glass and 1 towel although 2 people staying. No room either side of bed and very dated decor. Unclear from reception whether breakfast included. Noise from function downstairs really bad. Bathroom is wet room , dated and floor slippery. Staff very friendly, and willing to help . However much cheaper than other hotels in area, and bedding clean and teeny tiny bed was comfortable

I stayed at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel for a week in August of 2004. I found the staff most courteous and and the accomodations were excellent. I was on the sixth floor in a two room suite.
There is a possibility that I will be visiting Mongolia again in July or august of 2005,and I would probably try to stay at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel again.
The rooms were clean and comfortable and the services were excellent. They have a cozy breakfast bar where you can get your eggs ordered any style.
It is also centrally located.

There are no hidden surprises here. You can tell that this is an old, Soviet style hotel from the minute you lay your eyes on it. Keep that in mind, and you may find that this hotel is just fine, and they try hard to make you comfortable. Within reason, that is.
As long as you get one of the larger rooms, the rooms are really quite ok. Decent beds, and a workstation where you can sit and work. There is no WIFI, but an ethernet cable gives you a stable internet connection, which is not easy to come by in other hotels in UB.
Breakfast is nothing fancy, but you get your fruit, egg station, cereals and freshly baked breads. Actually, the spread is significantly better than what you would expect from the hotel by looking at it from the outside (or the impression you get from the reception).
Don't expect to be doing any treadmill jogging or working out. The gym probably dates to the days of the Soviet empire, or possibly a couple of years later.
I can understand the more reserved reviewers here - this is not a luxury hotel. But in a wholesome, down to earth manner, this is a place where you get what you see, no pretenses. Here on business, it had the amenities I needed, and neither Corporate or Springs (the other two places I have stayed in UB) are any better in my book.
A huge advantage of the UB Hotel is its central location. Given traffic in the city, this is a rather significant advantage. You can walk to good Japanese, Korean and western styles restaurants in central tower next door in just a couple of minutes.

I spent six nights at Ulaanbaatar Hotel in October 2004. The hotel was nearly empty. Standards of laundry, cleanliness of the room etc were very good. Hot water all the time even if it was an interesting shade of brown. Breakfast was mixed - corn flakes, yogurt etc available. But sliced meats - the same slices came out day after day and stayed on a table for 3 hours minimum. Reception staff were very helpful - especially when a lamp blew up and fused all power in my room. English was spoken by several staff. Travel Service was abysmal - internet service was very expensive, currency exchange similar. TV reception was fine - satellite.
The hotel obviously used to be a luxury hotel but it is jaded now and needs serious refurbishment - but by Mongolia standards it is much better than average. The coffee shop on the ground floor is excellent. An oasis in the desert.

The hotel location is great. That is it ! The ulaanbaatar hotel has nothing of a 5 star hotel. The rooms are antiquated and the beds really small. The prices are outrageous for that kind of service. They even forgot to wake us up for our early flight.

I stayed at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel in June-July of 2013 as part of a group tour.
Location was great - close to everything in the square
Rooms were HUGE - which was excellent and had lots of great inclusions such as large sized fridge, lots of power points and extension cords etc for charging of computers and other equipment.
The other advantage of such a huge room was the ability to get some exercise in as you may as well ignore the advertisement of a gym in their hotel - everything is broken and it is down a few eery looking hallways out the back of no where.
Breakfast at the hotel was average but had enough inclusions to keep me happy.
Overall I think the hotel does well for its age and it has a great location and they try to make up for the downfalls with other inclusions for the international traveler.

The Ulaanbaatar Hotel has easily been the worst hotel experience of my life. The service and prices are appalling. It is clear from the start that they have no interest in pleasing you as a customer, and only see you as a walking cash machine. After demanding that I pay an outrageous price for what was advertised as a "complimentary continental breakfast," which I refused, they locked me out of my room and withheld my belongs until I paid the fee. Eventually authorities had to be called in to resolve the situation but the hotel staff continued to berate and follow me through the parking lot, making a scene....over a $20 charge... Professionalism is not something they have worked into their business model as of yet.

Travelers to Ulaanbaatar, whether for pleasure or for business, are likely aware that the quality of accommodations generally are not comparable to those in other major cities. This will likely change with the opening of a Shangri-la Hotel later this year, but those travelers expecting perfumed foyers, attentive greeters, marble bathrooms, and in-room safes should avoid Ulaanbaatar altogether for now.
The Ulaanbaatar Hotel is perfectly located just to the east (3 minute walk) to Suhkbaatar Square and right next to Central Tower (the new, Class A office building with well appointed restaurants and a nice top-floor bar). It is also within walking distance to the stock exchange and most of the offices of the major mining companies. Every area of the hotel would benefit from refurbishment, but the rooms are generally clean and the service is professional. Expect the standards of an aging highway motel, and you will not be disappointed. There is wired, high speed internet service in the room, but do not expect business center services. Some things cannot be avoided (this was also the case at the Chinggis Khaan Hotel as well). First, the hot water pressure is spotty. Prepare for lukewarm showers. Second, be prepared for the air conditioning in the rooms to not work. My trip was in May, so the weather was pleasant and the air conditioning was not necessary, though it would have been helpful to air out the room. Prepare to make do with an open window and a large electric fan (helpfully provided in the room). Bring allergy medication if you suffer from hay fever, as some of the rooms are dusty and a bit moldy from water damage. Third, if you return to the hotel after midnight, there is a limited amount of, uh, professional activity in the small square directly in front of the hotel. Nothing sinister or threatening or remotely unsafe, but it is there. Fourth, as another reviewer stated, one would have low standards and no sense of adventure to eat any meal in the hotel other than breakfast. Breakfast is passable, albeit with a focus on vienna sausages. Central Tower has a few Western friendly ones. There are also a number of local restaurants in the streets intersecting Peace Avenue and Seoul Avenue. For the unadventurous, just go to the Great Khaan Irish Bar (seven minute walk southwest of the hotel). It feels like the expat center of Ulaanbaatar, with good beer and a varied western menu with the expected pub food.
Alternatively (this is what I recommend), you can walk north on the street that abuts the hotel's eastern entrance. The street winds past a number of university buildings and past a number of local bars and eateries (Korean, Indian, Mexican are all available). The best nightclub, Brix, is also on this street. It seems that many of Ulaanbaatar's young professionals (the kind that work in offices!) congregate here after midnight. There is a pleasant local pub with outdoor benches about 800 meters north of the hotel on the street. Further down that street (on the opposite side), there is an open air French restaurant that seems to attract a mix of university professor types and expats.
In short, stay at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel for the location. The traffic is so bad in the city, that it is best to be centrally located within walking distance of your meetings. I would stay there again myself.

The UB hotel touts itself as a five-star hotel. Other travelers make the point that the place doesn't measure up to western standards of such a grade--it doesn't....but within a country that is still struggling to develop fundamental urban infrastructure, it does a valiant job.
The reception staff were pleasant, uniformed doormen were always there to greet us and promptly transported our luggage to wherever it needed to go, the generous complimentary breakfast buffet was very nice, and so the strange variables of electrical power, hot water availability and such were part of the larger challenges that is presently part of visiting Mongolia.
I personally liked the place with all its idiosyncrasies, quiltlike cultural influences and convenient location within the city.

I've just returned from a five night stay at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel. In short, whilst it may boast of being U.B's oldest 5 Star hotel, it really is not a "5 star" in the western sense of the word. If you come here expecting modern luxury you won't find much of it anywhere in U.B, let alone this hotel.
The best thing going for this hotel is its location. Right on the main thoroughfare that runs through downtown U.B and 30 seconds from Sukhbaaatar Square (spelling?). Upon the arrival at the somewhat grand entrance you can't help but be impressed by the reception and imposing facade. Unfortunately that is where any hints of luxury end.
I don't know about the other rooms/suites available but I stayed in a "luxury executive suite". It was indeed a suite, having amongst other things an en-suite bath, large hallway/dressing area, bedroom and dining room. My view stretched as far as the grey drab monolith of a bank next door. The bedroom was large and consisted of two double beds, desk and T.V. The T.V. did receive a large number of western news channels including CNN and the Beeb World News.
The complex and rather over complicated light and appliance remote control adjacent to the bed was a nice modern touch. Unfortunately, as a result of repeated power-cuts during my stay (very common in U.B.) the lights would turn themselves on and off on a number of occasions during the night. Until I had gotten used to it, I did find it was slightly concerning! One bonus was the complimentary high speed internet access in the room. It was pretty fast at 100Mb and handled my webcam and V.O.I.P conversations with home with ease.
Breakfast was O.K. Eggs can be cooked for you however you like each morning. There was a wide range of fruit, bread and cereals available also. We didn't try the inhouse restaurant but it has a fine reputation.
All in all, it did what it said on the tin, and the rooms were clean and well maintained; although my minibar disappeared into thin air on my final day! There is a general malaise about the place though and food/cooking smells appeared to drift throughout the hotel where I was on the 5th floor. Plain and simple: don't expect too much.
The Hilton and Shangri La chains are building in U.B. as we speak. They are exactly what U.B needs and hotels like the Ulaanbaatar need to smarten up and improve or disappear. It is a real throwback to the dark days of the 1950s and you can sense the Soviet nostalgia when you arrive. If you are after nostalgia and enjoy roughing it, good. Unfortunately I'm not and will be trying another hotel on my next visit.
