I used the Narantuul for a couple of nights during a business trip to Mongilia at the end of July and it was my first stay there based on the comparsion of room rates aginst other UB hotels. If you are looking for 4 star "normal business" facilities do not use it but for a clean, value for money, friendly stop over it is excellent.
All the room types are spacious and clean. I stayed in a suite one night ( which was massive) and a standard room ( perfectly adequate for one person) the other. The furniture and decor is not luxurious but the bathrooms are new and clean , which was good as I hate old bathrooms.
Internet was free and easily acessible in the rooms. Both had a little kitchen area with fridge , microwave and work top area so you could get your own food in if you wanted to ( breakfast for example)
I only managed breakfast once and it looked typlically basic but get down early if you want fresh stuff. I did not use the bar but it was open both nights I was there.
There is a cash point 30yds from the front door if needed. The staff I had dealings with were very friendly and easy going.
I would stay again even for a longer period just for the value for money and lack of "hotel hassle". Hard beds as usual. I would need more hangers in the wardrobe. No A/C but a fan was provided which was okay for me but might not suit some.

Coming from the Airport and seeing some of the other hotels/hostels, I was somewhat wary of the experience I would have in this hotel. However, it was modern, very comfortable, clean and the hotel staff were very accommodating. It was also close to the State Department store and a number of nice restaurants were close by, particularly the green vine, where my girlfriend told me she has the nicest Clazone of her life!

I've been staying in Narantuul 1 week in September, 2008. I was surprised how spacious the hotel room can be. For just 105$ I had 3 rooms, 15-20 sq.m each: living room, bedroom and office room. In the living room there are a big TV, sofa, arm chairs, kitchen facilities, a couple of tables and other furniture. From the big balcony you can see the center of Ulan Bator. In the bedroom there is a king-size bed and a wardrobe. In the office room there is a table, a couple of chairs and a cable for Internet connection. By the way, Internet is something that need to be improved here. We were 3 colleagues staying in this hotel for business purposes, but we managed to get connection only in one room out of 3. Internet is not included in room rate, so it cost additional 10$ per day, which is expensive, I think.
The room was clean and all the facilities are quite new.
The hotel has 2 restaurants on the 3rd and 12th floor. The quality of the food there is ok, though sometimes we were disappointed. Breakfast is a fixed variety of different sets. Would be much better if they had buffet.
The personnel is quite helpful though sometimes they have a problem with English.

On the plus side;
The late pm / evening receptionist was great and did his best.
The single towel, face cloth and bath
At weee good quality.

The rest was dire. It was like Fawlty towers.
The keys are so high tech it’s hard to figure out how to open the room. but that’s likely just me being a dimwit.
The rooms are big but they don’t tell you the rooms are smoking rooms so no matter the size, if you aren’t a smoker all you can smell is old cigarettes and you have to contend with burn marks in the furniture.
Bed is rock hard and I mean solid, I like that but others would t.
Breakfast ….. you are presented with pictures the night before (croissant with egg or an ‘English’ or a Mongolian with beef tongue and noodles). You have to order in advance. Don’t expect the cook to have it ready for 7am for example and whatever you do, don’t exceed your one coffee and one juice or you will be presented with a bill - card only!
The rooms look scruffy and unloved but they do try to make them clean, bathroom and sheets were clean.

There is a huge list of rules.
It felt like what I imagine a high tech communist boarding school would be.

Look at my other review for a better nicer place to stay.

I stayed 2 nights at this hotel. It was 98$/night for 1 person.

1)Service= Not so good
When I checked in the hotel, the hotel man didn't explain at all. I think they should at least explain where the restaurant for breakfast is, because there is no explanation paper in the room.

2)
The room is OK. it's not too small and there were the desk, small kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.
HOWEVER,
(Internet)
I could not use internet for 1 day in 2days.

(Hot water)
I took a shower for 3 times, but the enough hot water didn't come out from shower.
1st night, it's quite small amount of hot water, but i could barely take a shower.
But 2nd day, no water (hot neither cold) didn't come out from shower and kitchen..

(Noises)
I stayed at 11th floor. It's exactly under the restaurant bar. The restaurant bar has the piano and from 6 o' clock to 11, so noisy.

I think this service does not deserve 98$.

We spent a week at the Narantuul in June 2010, with our children who are 17 and 21. Our reservation was for 2 rooms, one for my husband and myself and one for the "young adults", who no longer want to share a room with their parents. Our "two rooms" turned out to comprise an entire floor of the hotel, with each "room" actually being a suite that took up an entire side of the floor. Each suite was huge, with master bedroom (king bed, very firm Asian-style mattress), extra bedroom (single bed), huge living room with flat-screen TV, small office (internet-capable), very large full bathroom, small dining table and 4 chairs, and small kitchen with stovetop and fridge. Essentially, each was an apartment, not a hotel room. We were stunned by the size. Huge windows along the entire length of each suite which opened outward like doors, and one suite had a small balcony. Because this is downtown UB, the streets are busy, all night long. UB isn't a clean city, it's old, and Soviet-style - and it doesn't sleep - there's a lot of traffic even at 3-4 AM. So there was street light in the room even at night. If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs and/or eyeshades. There is no AC but there were large standing fans provided and between those and the crossbreezes from all the windows, we had no trouble staying cool. The white noise from the fans was great for sleeping as well.

We arrived late, 11 PM. The restaurant had just closed but they opened back up and cooked a quick dinner for us anyways. How many places do that??! The restaurants were clean with good service, and breakfasts were quite good; the dinner menu wasn't huge but this is a small hotel, and there are tons of great restaurants to choose from in UB - no need to eat dinner in your hotel. The art/decor is quirky and interesting, to say the least! There's a small grocery across the street for fresh fruit, eggs, milk, bread, butter, etc which you can cook and keep in your kitchen. The fridge in each room was stocked daily with bottled water, soda, snacks, chocolate - like an American hotel minibar.

The location is great - a 5 minute walk to the State Department Store, Sukhbatar Square, and dozens of great restaurants. Easy to get to anywhere on foot, and the hotel driver can take you where you need to go (arrange fare ahead of time), or arrange for a taxi for you.

We've traveled extensively in South Asia and our kids are seasoned travelers. We don't like to stay in resorts or typical American hotels (why travel to Asia if it's going to feel just like home?). At the same time, we do like to be comfortable and we insist on clean and safe. We all agreed that Mongolia was one of our most fascinating trips and that Narantuul was the best little jewel we've found in 20+ years of adventures in Asia.

Munguntuya, the manager, was extremely helpful with everything we needed both before and during our stay - she's fabulous. Everyone at the Narantuul went out of their way to be helpful with taxis, translating, answering questions, etc and we would go back there in a second. Our son had to take his SAT's while we were in UB and they helped us locate the testing site the day before - then had one of their drivers take him there the morning of the test, to make sure that he got there on time.

Stayed here back in 2011 - the rooms are large, clean and staff friendly.
Plenty of restaurants and bars close to the hotel and about a 10 minute walk down Peace Ave to Chinggis Khaan Square area. Depending on which floor you are on, you get a pretty good view of Ulaanbaatar.

Very large rooms, separate bedroom, living room and sometimes a small work room. Decent location, not far from the department store and restaurants. The breakfast is standard a la carte, not a buffet. No gym, but there is a gym quite close by. Nice and friendly personnel. There is an ok restaurant on the top floor.

Our tour company put my travel partner and I in this hotel for the couple nights in UB. It is a business person hotel - or so appeared to us. We were the only women at breakfast; the men appeared to be on business trips to UB. The food in the breakfast buffet was good, and varied. The options were suitable for my tastes (American). Service was excellent. The room was comfortable, clean and huge! Included desk space, kitchenette, living room. Bathroom was clean, and more than adequate. We were on the 9th floor, and had a good view of the neighborhood leading up to the Temple. I accidentally left the key in the door, on the outside of the room, all night our first night. No disturbance.

My one complaint is that there were construction going on in the commerical lot next door until about 2 AM. Our tour guide said that this was typical because of the terrible traffic in UB; the construction vehicles would not have been too hard to deal with during the daytime traffic.

I spent a few nights at the Narantuul hotel. The staff were friendly but their English skills were a bit patchy so it sometimes took a few attempts to get what you needed. The rooms are very generously sized (I did not stay in a standard room however as there were none available). The televisions were a bit dated but showed 4 or 5 different English language programs which was relatively reasonable for this price range. Breakfast is not included but there is a basic room service menu, two restaurants (neither of which i went to) and the room kitchen facilities are clean and ample. The bathrooms were big and the water pressure strong. The hotel is on Peace Avenue. It is a ten minute walk to the State Dept Store and twenty to Sukhbataar Square. I felt very comfortable at the Narantuul hotel during my stay and would definitely choose it again.
