The hotel has a colonial touch, stylish furniture. The rooms are very nice, great beds, easy to open windows, if required. The bath rooms are fully equipped with all what you need. The rooms facilities also include a Nespresso coffee machine, water boiler for teas, minibar and safe. Great breakfast buffet with complementary NYTimes. Great coffee and orange juice, large variety of arabic sweets and breads. The hotel location is just walking distance from the Damascus gate and from there its a great getaway to explore the old city of Jerusalem.
The service is good, but could be even better... some staff have been working at hotel for so long they sometimes lose the focus on the clients!

It is not just the history or its location (it is close to some modern large hotels and while those are high buildings, they cannot overshadow this hotel. Service is excellent and not pushy; admittedly we had a fancy room with private veranda/terrace adjacent to an amazing small garden and being there was a pleasure. If you can afford it (and remember this is Jerusalem, riots or COVID or not, hotels ain't cheap, take a room in this hotel for the experience. The book shop and the person who runs it are worth a visit and do not miss to wander around to look at the photographs as this was where for decades Jerusalem's premier photographers and photography lab was. Concerning sanitation, it is spick span clean, but masks are hardly worn anymore here because of the low COVID incidence for the past month and a half and high vaccination rate. Also the Palestinain authorities numbers are dropping drastically

A hundred sixty years of history this stunning and character colonial architecture hotel is the embracing arms of Jerusalem !
The romantic courtyard restaurant is very cozy with impeccable cuisine and unblemished services. The bar cellar has a very intimate and legendary feeling . The authentic guest Rooms are enchanting and evoke you to a colonial memories.

I will start with the one negative - which really isn’t a huge negative: if you like a cooler room, ask to stay in the “new” part.
Otherwise, it’s paradise.
The rooms, amentities, and grounds are clean and beautiful. The staff are extremely nice and helpful and always willing to please - with a smiling face.
The room was spacious and comfortable… and the bathroom was not microscopic and quite usable… and they had big towels (I hate flimsy small towels).
Diana at the front desk is wonderful…
The bar and restaurant (we had breakfast and dinner there every day except one for 9 days) are amazing!! Faji in the bar makes a mean old fashioned.
In the dining room, Hamzeh and Mutaz had us completely spoiled. They treated us like we were family… and really made the stay special.
The garden is amazing… so well kept thought out…. Loved the kitchen garden and the courtyard….
And the resident cat is an added bonus!
The location is perfect for walking to old city… it’s an easy and fun walk - with lots of sights and sounds and flavors along the way.
I wouldn’t stay a single place visiting Jerusalem but here.

When I heard the name, “American Colony” I cringed. Who wants to stay somewhere American when in Jerusalem?! And “colony”? Don’t get me started! Well, it turns out that for a hundred plus years, this historic gem has been one of the best hotels in the Holy Land, after being a mansion for a man with four wives, a war hospital, a homeless shelter, a commune, a Christian-run orphanage and a refuge of every kind. It is now a refuge of the most luxurious kind, quietly nestled in lush gardens of fruits, herbs and flowers and built around a lovely courtyard fountain. The breakfast buffet is unparalleled and different every morning, and the staff is kind, observant, attentive and multi lingual. The rooms are immaculate and have elegant balconies, fluffy duvets and really interesting ceilings and views of the old city and the beautiful pool and spa. On the campus out front is a shop that has been selling local craftwork for 3 generations. Textiles, rugs, jewelry, icons and art are all in a beautiful jumble. I spent way too much there, but the items were the nicest I had seen anywhere in the city and I don’t love to haggle. We enjoyed drinks in the underground bar, and could have spent the day in the Spa having treatments, or in the pool or sauna or weight room. Instead we had a huge party for dinner in the courtyard our first night and went out and about in the city all day. Our hotel was a very welcome refuge in the evening. The American Colony Hotel is real Jerusalem at it’s ancient, multicultural, lovely eclectic best. Stay here! This crowned my trip of a lifetime.

Overall we really enjoyed our brief stay here. The location is great, rooms are comfortable and grounds / pool are really atmospheric. The bar was also pretty cool and worth a visit even if you're not staying. Food at the restaurant was delicious but the restaurant itself felt a bit like a canteen.

Our trip was only slightly let down by a few issues / delays at check in and then reception being understaffed. There were no staff at the door or in the first lobby and no welcome, which was a real shame as would have made a big difference. Equally, we arrived at two pm and were made to wait until 2:59 until our room was ready - which felt deliberate and petty, whatever the actual reason.

The American Colony is a 5-star (in U.S. terms) hotel stylized from the early 20th century. Its classic old world design is only surpassed by the service of its staff. They understand the demands of well-heeled international travelers and effortlessly accommodate requests. The rooms in the original building are charming though relatively small, but well-maintained and include all amenities one would expect of a hotel of this caliber. Breakfast buffet offerings are extensive and the courtyard dining and summer patio are both enchanting.

The hotel itself is a true gem and the location makes it a fairly quiet place outside of the hustle and bustle of central Jerusalem, whilst the old city is within good walking distance and in proximity to a tram connecting all of the spot you want to got to.

The hotel has a pleasant and historic feel to it and effort has been spent to maintain the hotel and its rich history. The rooms were very nice and clean with good amenities as well. The breakfast is definitely recommended and I’d also suggest a drink in the courtyard in the evening.

Staff is very friendly and helpful with the concierge providing a lot of information about the hotel, surrounding area and things to do in Jerusalem.

The only negative thing I would like to raise is that the tours that were suggested by the hotel are for an extortionate price specially for 2 people (quoted 360 dollars for a tour of the old city and 350 for a trip to Bethlehem). Noting that Bethlehem is under 20 km and just a taxi or bus ride away, and local tours to the old city go for around 40 dollars per person, the prices quoted are borderline criminal. If this is the best they can do, I would suggest working with some agencies (e.g. Sandemans) to provide some more affordable options.

Dear Joris, Thank you very much for your genuine comments and appraisal, I will certainly share your review with my colleagues. With regards with what you call high prices for the tours and borderline criminal, let me just inform you that we benchmark with all other 5 star hotels and that the tours we recommend are 100% private in other words you have a guided tour just for you. I agree you can get a $40.-- tour in the old city but you will be part of a big group and I think at the end everybody can choose their options according to their budget and there is no obligation to book a tour through the hotel. Many Thanks and best regards.

The American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem is a beautiful and historic place to stay.

The staff are friendly and were obliging of any requests we had during our stay.

The lobby has a vast seating area with wood burning stove lighting in the evenings. The gardens are beautiful and are a great place to sit and relax throughout the day.

During our stay, we dined in the Cellar Bar and main restaurant. The light snacks in the bar were good and the restaurant food was very nice. The menu has a good offering of quality local and international cuisine.

The rooms were very comfortable. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the gardens and on-site shops. The beds were very comfortable. The television had a large choice of international channels. The mini-bar is serviced everyday and no additional charges are incurred when availing of it. Turn down service is provided every night.

The bathroom was spacious and contains a radio. Quality individual toiletries of the Acqua di Parma brand are provided. Shower was over the bath.

Also on the grounds is the Palestinian Heritage Museum and this is well worth a visit if you have an interest in the culture.

The only possible downside that I could see if you are staying here for tourism is that it is a bit of a walk to the Old City. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the Damascus Gate. However the area is well lit and felt safe at all times. However, the hotel is fantastic and a very beautiful place to stay while in Jerusalem.

The staff are very eager to please both prior & during our stay. The continental buffet was great, the lunch & dinner prices are comparable with local restaurants and within walking distance of the old city. I cannot overstate how important it is to drink plenty of fluids in August and the complimentary minibar goes a long way to helping with that. Housekeeping are extremely thoughtful; I'd broken my sandals one day and when we came back to our room that night, there were complimentary sandals waiting for us.
The hotel has a very long history that is on display for all guests in the various hallways. Our room also had framed pictures from the very early days.
Such an amazing gem and (unless this was intentional) they really under-sell themselves online. The pictures do not do justice to the property.

I had elevator in my area but to enter my building I had to climb an eight-step stairs so someone helped me with my two suitcases. I am not sure that they have accessible rooms. The place is extraordinary and the staff is the most competent and helpful. Call them and explain your situation. The hotel is worth it.
