When I heard the name, “American Colony” I cringed. Who wants to stay somewhere American when in Jerusalem?! And “colony”? Don’t get me started! Well, it turns out that for a hundred plus years, this historic gem has been one of the best hotels in the Holy Land, after being a mansion for a man with four wives, a war hospital, a homeless shelter, a commune, a Christian-run orphanage and a refuge of every kind. It is now a refuge of the most luxurious kind, quietly nestled in lush gardens of fruits, herbs and flowers and built around a lovely courtyard fountain. The breakfast buffet is unparalleled and different every morning, and the staff is kind, observant, attentive and multi lingual. The rooms are immaculate and have elegant balconies, fluffy duvets and really interesting ceilings and views of the old city and the beautiful pool and spa. On the campus out front is a shop that has been selling local craftwork for 3 generations. Textiles, rugs, jewelry, icons and art are all in a beautiful jumble. I spent way too much there, but the items were the nicest I had seen anywhere in the city and I don’t love to haggle. We enjoyed drinks in the underground bar, and could have spent the day in the Spa having treatments, or in the pool or sauna or weight room. Instead we had a huge party for dinner in the courtyard our first night and went out and about in the city all day. Our hotel was a very welcome refuge in the evening. The American Colony Hotel is real Jerusalem at it’s ancient, multicultural, lovely eclectic best. Stay here! This crowned my trip of a lifetime.

The staff are very eager to please both prior & during our stay. The continental buffet was great, the lunch & dinner prices are comparable with local restaurants and within walking distance of the old city. I cannot overstate how important it is to drink plenty of fluids in August and the complimentary minibar goes a long way to helping with that. Housekeeping are extremely thoughtful; I'd broken my sandals one day and when we came back to our room that night, there were complimentary sandals waiting for us.
The hotel has a very long history that is on display for all guests in the various hallways. Our room also had framed pictures from the very early days.
Such an amazing gem and (unless this was intentional) they really under-sell themselves online. The pictures do not do justice to the property.

I will start with the one negative - which really isn’t a huge negative: if you like a cooler room, ask to stay in the “new” part.
Otherwise, it’s paradise.
The rooms, amentities, and grounds are clean and beautiful. The staff are extremely nice and helpful and always willing to please - with a smiling face.
The room was spacious and comfortable… and the bathroom was not microscopic and quite usable… and they had big towels (I hate flimsy small towels).
Diana at the front desk is wonderful…
The bar and restaurant (we had breakfast and dinner there every day except one for 9 days) are amazing!! Faji in the bar makes a mean old fashioned.
In the dining room, Hamzeh and Mutaz had us completely spoiled. They treated us like we were family… and really made the stay special.
The garden is amazing… so well kept thought out…. Loved the kitchen garden and the courtyard….
And the resident cat is an added bonus!
The location is perfect for walking to old city… it’s an easy and fun walk - with lots of sights and sounds and flavors along the way.
I wouldn’t stay a single place visiting Jerusalem but here.

We decided to sample this hotel for a weekend night after finding an incredible point redemption rate.

The hotel is located in a rather unattractive area of Jerusalem, some 30 minutes stroll from old town. Parking is free of charge for hotel guests.

However, the hotel itself looks lovely and consists of several Ottoman buildings, connected together through passes and yards. Strolling through the hotel made us feel as if we're in a museum, rather than a hotel.

We checked in at apx. 4:30PM on a Friday afternoon.
We were immediately told by the somehow unfriendly receptionist, that despite paying with Hilton points, the hotel would charge us 18% of VAT as if we were paying the room's regular price. That's preposterous and might even be illegal, as we're currently looking into it.

As Diamond members, we were upgraded from a Comfort room to a junior suite and were allocated room 312.
Our room was rather large, offered ugly views to the parking lot, featured a king-size bed, an uncomfortable sofa bed, an armchair, a coffee table, a TV, a desk and chair, a Nespresso machine, a safe and a minibar (with complimentary 2 soda water bottles and 2 grape juice bottles).

The bathroom was large with a sink, toilets (which were shockingly dirty), a shower with a strong water pressure and a bath tub.
Unfortunately, the Acqua di Parma toiletries are gone and were replaced by 3USD a liter dispensers of a generic cheap brand.

The room was not light-proof (and that's putting it mildly) and we were woken by direct sunlight coming through the drapes.
There's a nearby mosque (some 50 meters from the hotel), so you could expect a 4:30AM wake up Muaazin call.
The A/C in the room was terrible and variated from being too cold or too hot.

We had dinner and breakfast at the Arabesque restaurant, which was only average and pricy. I've written a several review about it.
Breakfast was included with our rate, but dinner was apx. USD70 for a couple.

Bottom line - while this is considered a 5-star hotel with "old world charm", it certainly did not live up to its expectation, especially with the mediocre room, food and VAT blunder.

First time in Israel and came to the Holy Land for my 60th birthday, a week at The American Colony hotel. As soon as we arrived, my daughter and I were warmly welcomed by Mr Yousef Habash who accompanied us on a tour of the hotel and its beautiful garden with its vegetables and spices, a pond with fish, a very calm place to recharge your batteries. A magnificent swimming pool where you can get there via the stairs and, importantly, a lift for people in wheelchairs. A banking device for withdrawing money. 2 restaurants the main one where you also have a delicious buffet breakfast on the terrace with plants and some small birds and the other side 2nd building (the rooms are in 3 beautiful buildings) a bar restaurant with barbecue located in a magnificent garden.
Our magnificent room with terrace was located in the main building where the reception and swimming pool are located. There is a souvenir shop on the site but items like beach outfits or traditional handmade outfits are too expensive!
The especially male cleaning team (this surprised us! Very few women working in the hotel!). There is a beautiful gym next to the swimming pool and a hammam and sauna, plus a spa which I have not tried because many go to explore the country during the day. The hotel is a 25-minute walk from Old Jerusalem but with 32° we had the taxi price (you have to negotiate the price). Thank you to all the very professional staff and the hotel was a favorite. See you next time .

For months of planning this trip I was incredibly excited to stay at The American Colony Hotel. The grounds are so well kept , and it has an old world romanticism that inspires you to visit Jerusalem. That being said, the front desk staff needs hospitality training. Any questions I asked were a solid NO. I called a month in advance and asked for a late check out. They told me to call back a week before, and the person who answered the phone said no, but to ask the day of check in. I asked at check-in and they said they would have to decide on Friday the day we were checking out. So right before we had breakfast, I asked again. Mind you we were scheduled for a 10 o’clock and an 11 o’clock massage in their spa facility. The man at the front desk was stern and said that I would have to check out by noon. I told him that, I wouldn’t even get back from the spa until noon and then I would have to shower and do minimal packing. The phone in our room started ringing at 12:45 and asked us if our luggage was ready. I told them that I needed another 15 minutes but they continued to call every few minutes to push us out the room. Now we have been walking past all of the rooms on our floor and they were clean and empty (the doors were all wedged open so the man cleaning could come and go) when we finally got down to the front desk, Diana mentioned that she charged me for an extra night because I was checking out late, but that she would do me a favor and remove the charge. I told her it was not a favor, I would just dispute it with American Express. She said it’s Friday, as did the other man chiming in by the front desk and that all the rooms are taken and that I was holding them up. There was nobody in the lobby and an entire wing of cleaned rooms. No matter what time of day, the front desk staff were terse and unhelpful. I will say whoever runs the garden dining, and the other dining room has a complete understanding of how to take care of people, and how to hire people to do that because they were the nicest. There are many hotels in Jerusalem, research ones where you won’t get admonished for your needs.

Dear Christineabella, Thank you for your review and I'm sorry to hear that we don't understand hospitality ! Let me tell you that everywhere in the World, late check outs and early check-ins are ALWAYS subject to availability and as much we try to show flexibility well when it is not possible because we are fully booked back to back then sorry but we could not accommodate your request. Thank God the many other reviews on TripAdvisor shows us how professional and what a great sens of hospitality we have. Yours sincerely.

We stayed for the weekend at the American Colony. We heard about this hotel many times but never had the chance to stay here until now. What can I say? The hotel beautifully tells the history of Jerusalem while offering all the modern facilities and comforts of a high-end boutique hotel.

The architecture is stunning and authentic, which, in itself, is a great reason to stay here. Jerusalem is a multicultural city, and this hotel truly reflects that. You can hear and speak any language here—English, Arabic, and Hebrew. Every culture is respected.

The rooms are perfect, with different types, each offering its own unique charm, and the food is absolutely exquisite. The service is exceptional—whatever you need, just ask, and it’s provided. Most of the time, though, you don’t even need to ask; the staff seems to anticipate your needs.

The reception manager and her team made us feel like they were there just for us, and I’m sure all the guests feel the same way (even with over 80 rooms!).

We had a wonderful time and will definitely come back on our next visit to Jerusalem. ♥️🙏

An elegant and wonderful boutique hotel, perfect in every way. We really enjoyed safe and comfortable parking, cordial hospitality, the beautiful buildings and gardens and the luxurious room. We were also able to enjoy professional spa treatments, fine food and in general everything was abundant and generous, clean and polished. There is no doubt that this is one of the best hotels we have had the chance to stay at in general and in particular in Israel. We will come back for sure.

Easily with the possible exception of The King David-the best hotel in Jerusalem. The hotel is set in beautiful gardens. Several restaurants and bars. The restaurant -unlike other hotels- ranks within the top ten or even seven in the city. Walking distance from the old city , the light train station and the unique Museum on the Seam. Medium priced in Israeli terms: a deal for one night, two persons plus breakfast and bottle of wine and cheese platter in the room with free sodas cost 410$ . Service is well above the average Israeli hotel. Swimming pool and spa on the premises.

The American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem is a beautiful and historic place to stay.

The staff are friendly and were obliging of any requests we had during our stay.

The lobby has a vast seating area with wood burning stove lighting in the evenings. The gardens are beautiful and are a great place to sit and relax throughout the day.

During our stay, we dined in the Cellar Bar and main restaurant. The light snacks in the bar were good and the restaurant food was very nice. The menu has a good offering of quality local and international cuisine.

The rooms were very comfortable. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the gardens and on-site shops. The beds were very comfortable. The television had a large choice of international channels. The mini-bar is serviced everyday and no additional charges are incurred when availing of it. Turn down service is provided every night.

The bathroom was spacious and contains a radio. Quality individual toiletries of the Acqua di Parma brand are provided. Shower was over the bath.

Also on the grounds is the Palestinian Heritage Museum and this is well worth a visit if you have an interest in the culture.

The only possible downside that I could see if you are staying here for tourism is that it is a bit of a walk to the Old City. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the Damascus Gate. However the area is well lit and felt safe at all times. However, the hotel is fantastic and a very beautiful place to stay while in Jerusalem.

I had elevator in my area but to enter my building I had to climb an eight-step stairs so someone helped me with my two suitcases. I am not sure that they have accessible rooms. The place is extraordinary and the staff is the most competent and helpful. Call them and explain your situation. The hotel is worth it.
