We also felt completely safe in the surrounding area both during the day and in the evening. The walk to the Old City by day took us through "normal" seeming streets with kids on their way to school, people catching buses, etc. Much quieter at night but still felt safe. Taxis were useful not so much for security reasons but because they are an easy and convenient way of getting to West Jerusalem, though there is a trolley stop very nearby.
