I stayed in the Excelsior Hotel between Oct 22 and Nov 3 of 2019 with my wife on a vacation trip. I have to say that the service of the people in the hotel was exceptional, from the front desk to well, I have to say that i did not find anyone with attitude or issues towards the guests. Gregorio at the bar with 30 yrs being in that hotel was a walking record of the people who had visited the hotel for years. Plus service with a smile. Jose at the front desk was always helpful, plus the service in our rooms was punctual and on point. For me and my wife, we found the structure of the hotel needing a renovation as the hotel is showing its years, nonetheless, our experience was fantastic and will stay there again. We walked everywhere from the hotel as adventurers we are. In front of the hotel, a mall and under the mall a supermarket. Several simpler options to eat, buy and satisfy the traveler mixing yourself on paraguayan's day to day was key for us. Not far away (a block maybe) a laundry where we took our dirty cloth and had it washed and folded for us for a very good price. A casino inside the hotel which always had a great ambiance. Nothing but great experiences for me and my wife. If you are into the adventure and looking for a fair price, and great service this is the place to go. I don't give it 5 stars because the facility needs some renovation, which I believe they are working on it now.

The hotel is very far from the modern life of Asuncion, it was not a good option. it is rated as 5 stars hotel but I will rate it as 4 stars. The hotel is very old and consumed a lot . people in the reception are friendly. Nothing special in Paraguay

We appreciate your comments. The Excelsior hotel is marketed as a 4 star and it would be very useful to know where we appear as 5 stars. In all our quotations and internet sites that we handle we clarify that we are a 4 stars although I could see one that is placing us as 5 stars. Asunción currently has two areas, the shopping and corporate area located 5 km away and the historic center where we are located. We will continue to work on improving this information for guests.

I had booked this hotel for a 7 nights stay based on their good reviews at TripAdvisor - and because it was located close to the institution I was to be working with. Arrived at 6 in the morning after zero sleep due to travelling and longing for a rest before starting working. Got horrified by what it really was like and left within a couple of hours. In brief: once upon a time this hotel was probably an elegant and classical one in the old city centre of Asunción. However, today it is just horribly run-down, rooms are spacious but very noisy, windows do not close entirely, beds are old and tired and the bathrooms just ugly. Staff at reception were OK and the amount I finally had to pay for cancelling my stay was acceptable. Looking around before leaving, it was obvious the worn-down character did not apply just to my room (at the 10th floor) but also to the facilities as such. This fact contrasts harshly with the score on Trip Advisor, which is entirely misleading. Also, talking to my Paraguayan friends somewhat later they were just stunned I had reserved at this place at all.

Dear Sir. I have opened a case with my staff regarding your claim and contrary to what you say, I was informed that when they asked you about the reason for your early departure, you said that it was because the hotel was not conveniently located to the offices in which you should work. Location is something that is beyond our ability to solve, for that reason we only charge the spent night and we do not apply any penalty for early departure. We were surprised to read your claims, because if we had knowledge your disagreement we would have suggested options to make your stay more pleasant. Comments and opinions made by our guests on Trip Advisor, booking.com and other rewievs sites are subjective and personal and we do not have any interference on them, we do not believe that they are deceptive and whether they are for good or for bad the only thing we do is take them into account to go improving the quality of our services and achieving our main objective which is our guest satisfaction. We think that for that reason our quality score is improving every day and we deeply regret that you have not had a good stay with us. Thanks for your comments and rewiev.

By my reckoning, this was my 22nd visit to the Excelsior in slightly less than ten years, so they must be doing something right! Traditionally, this hotel had two mutually complementary restaurants: La Cabaña la Pascuala, located at street level, beside the swimming pool and strategically between the hotel proper and the Excelsior Inn and Il Pagliaccio, adjacent to the lobby and lobby bar. Each had its distinct ethos, La Pascuala serving gastronomically unremarkable Paraguayan food, with an emphasis on steak, whilst Il Pagliaccio served international food, with an emphasis on the Italian, as indicated by its name. The main attraction of La Pascuala was the excellent and constantly improving folk-lore show, which attracted probably more non residents than residents, whilst Il Pagliaccio was more suited to conversation and predictably was busier at lunch time. Both had separate street entrances. For some reason, Il Pagliaccio never attracted the volume of customers which it merited and was obviously not fully viable economically and it had been closed, ostensibly for re-decoration, during my two previous visits. It was a disappointment to learn from Paraguayan friends that it had recently re-opened as a “casino”. A casino, as the term is normally understood, it most certainly is NOT, being best described as a “slot-machine arcade”, something totally unsuited to a five star hotel, although I imagine that its presence may have already knocked off at least one star of the Excelsior’s cherished five. For some unfathomable reason, the carpets of the lobby bar have also been removed, perhaps in anticipation of an invasion of the great un-washed from the “casino”, the new tiled floor giving it the atmosphere more of an up-market public toilet than the bar of a world-standard hotel. Not content with this and for some reason totally devoid of logic, the seating capacity of the bar has also been reduced to a maximum of fourteen and that only by robbing chairs from the adjacent TV lounge and waiting areas. Whilst the remaining qualities of the Excelsior, on which I have remarked on many previous occasions, ensure that it still remains amongst my favourites internationally, I dread to think what further “improvements” are contemplated and can only hope that recent developments represent a temporary aberration!

I recently completed what I calculate to have been my 21st visit to the Excelsior, over a period of nine years. The fact that I I keep coming back and find something new to praise after each visit speaks for itself. One small detail underlines and reinforces my attachment to this hotel. One day, on returning from a (very) late lunch, I discovered that my room had not been serviced, due to a stupid omission on my part to change the "do not disturb" notice on the door of my room for "please make up room". Within a short time of reporting this, rather shame-facedly to Reception, the room was not only completely serviced but a medium-sized bag of laundry had been removed and was returned washed and ironed within two hours! On the subject of laundry, although nominally it is supposed to be handed over before 10 am for return the same day, in my experience, it has invariably been returned the same day, regardless of how late it is handed over - I normally leave a bag on the bed when I leave the room, which is rarely before mid-day. I always incur a considerable amount in respect of "extras" as I use the hotel as a meeting point with friends, something which inevitably results in a substantial bar bill and for one reason or another I usually find myself either dining or lunching there, almost invariably with guests, half a dozen or so times in each visit. Being at my most anti-social in the mornings, I also almost invariably have breakfast in my room and because I travel as light a possible also incur considerable laundry bills. Nevertheless, the bill for "extras" is always less than I expect and after the most recent visit was also further discounted by 20%! I have fairly extensive experience of hotels throughout most of Latin America and Western Europe but the Excelsior beast them all hollow!
