The hosts were SUPER kind and friendly! The room was comfy, and the traditional wood and decorations were really interesting! There was clear communication and I felt very comfortable asking questions at any time. The view from our room was quite nice - I could see the cityscape and also a hint of Namsan (N Seoul) Tower. Breakfast was ample...

I highly recommend Bukchomaru Hanok! The staff were kind, genuine and helpful. We stayed in the family room with private bath and it was perfect. The mats are more comfortable than you think and the breakfast was great too! A definite highlight of our trip. The location was good as well and close to restaurants, the subway, and more.

Warm both literally and figuratively. The place is quaint, boutique, local, historic and filled with the warmth of the host but also literally warm heated floors in your room. Simple and small double room perfect for single or couple travelers with clean shared bathroom. Family who runs it are friendly, engaging and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, and filling. Location great,...

I went to Seoul in a group of 10 and we managed to book this Hanok as a whole. All 4 rooms and 3 toilets were very well maintained and very clean too. The water heater worked perfectly fine for all 3 toilets even when all 3 toilets were in use at one time. The owners are bilingual, very fluent...

This place is great, the owners are lovely and helpful. They provide a fantastic traditional breakfast and the option to wear hanbok for the day. It is a traditional building once lived in by the owners. Our room was small but worked well for us. It was freezing outside but it was so lovely and warm inside, with great underfloor...

The facilities were clean and well- maintained. Despite the cold weather, the room was warmly heated up throughout the whole night. My friend and I were served with the Korean traditional breakfast. One of the perks is that you get to experience wearing the hanbok costume for photoshoots with no additional cost. Hosts are friendly, it was a lovely stay!...

Good accommodation for those keen to experience the traditional guest house in Korea. Location is ideal if you plan to visit the two main palaces and the Bukchon area. Walking from Anguk station can be a slight challenge as the path is steep but there is a bus that stops just right in front the guest house. The staff members...

We were only surprised when we had to carry luggage up to 2nd floor upon reaching. But after that all are wonderful. It has a great view from the top. Hosts were wonderful people, even brought us to the shop & translate for us when we want to make hanbok. Even recommend us the palace & secret garden next to...

My family had an unique experience at Seoul's traditional Bukchonmaru Hanok guesthouse. With initial hesitation to book insteadof a standard hotel, our stay turned out to be a fulfilling one. Centrally located, the accomodation's ambience (we booked a private family room with attached toilet) is very Korean. The neighbourhood is not the hectic town type, and we are treated to...

Staying in Samcheongdong / Bukchon

Neighbourhood Profile
Samcheongdong / Bukchon
This historic neighbourhood was traditionally home to Seoul’s middle and upper-classes. Now it’s most famed for its clusters of beautiful, traditional Korean homes (called hanok), many of which are found in Bukchon. Many of these homes have now been converted into restaurants, cafes, shops, and even guesthouses, and their unique architecture offers a look at Korea’s traditional beauty. Samcheongdong’s main and side streets attract locals and tourists alike for their quaint and charming scenery, while the Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae) serves as the residence for South Korea’s president. Art fans will love exploring the many independent and private art galleries in the area.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Bukchon Maru Hanok Guesthouse is located in the heart of the Bukchon Hanok residential area in Seoul. Bukchon (meaning North Village in Korean) has the highest concentration of Hanoks, the traditional tiled-roof Korean buildings. We are a family run guest house, having owned this property for over 30 years. Due to its proximity to the local palaces, Bukchon has been home to high government officials and prestigious families of the late Chosen Dynasty, who needed to commute to the local palaces often. The name "Bukchon" was synonymous with status and class in the era no more than 100 years ago. Along with the tumultuous modern Korean history, the quiet neighborhood of Bukchon also underwent significant changes. Modern buildings began to appear, and with the elimination of traditional class system, more and more people swarmed in to the village. ... more   less
