We visited Mara Toto, now Mara Expedition Camp, in September of 2015 and knew we would go back. We did just that in March of 2017. We spent 3 nights this time with Stella, the Manager, and her wonderful staff. Stella knows just how to make you feel at home and works diligently at making sure you feel that way....

Fantastic people - wonderful place - incredible experience! Stella and the wonderful team at the camp are without a doubt the best part of the camp experience - this is not to say that the accommodations aren't fantastic - you are hardly roughing it in the beautifully appointed tents - that the food isn't spectacular - having eaten in some...

This camp is small, with very good food and well located in an animal rich area. We stayed 4 nights and listened to hippos playing in the river outside our room. We enjoyed getting to know the manager and other guests. Our guide was excellent and we have amazing pictures of lion prides, hyenas, vultures and wildebeest crossing the river.

If you are seeking an experience that remains true to the environment and close to nature, look no further---this is the "real deal". Stella and her staff have created a wonderful and warm home in the Masai Mara Reserve; conveniently located, game that is visible from the lodge, flexibility in their operational capabilities ----one day , at late notice, lunch...

The camp is well located, very friendly staff and good food. The rooms are clean and one cannot find fault with anything really. The staff are always available to assist and please you. Security is very good and we have no fear sleeping in tents with wildebeest, hippos, lions and leopard roaming outside the camp.

This was the last stop on a five week stint in Kenya. It really was the icing on the cake. The camp and the service was impeccable right down to the detail, and our guide Duncan never stopped looking for wildlife. Totally down to him that we saw a huge wildebeest crossing. Worth every penny!

this is my second time at Mara Toto and if it is possible it was as amazing if not more amazing than the first visit. The "tents" are breathtaking, the food is scrumptious, and the staff and guides are some of the best I have ever had of my many Kenyan visits! There is nothing that they miss and they...

WOW...what a trip and Mara Toto was fantastic. Stella, Sami and all the crew exceeded our expectations at every turn. Coffee brought to your tent for the early morning starts was a great touch. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Just a few kilometres downstream from Mara Plains, in the world famous Masai Mara Reserve, lies Mara Expedition Camp. Only open from June - October annually, the camp is tucked away in a small bend in the Ntiakitiak River, where thick forest meets savannah and offers a perfect blend of comfort, adventure and intimacy making this a gem in the otherwise confounding matrix of camps in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Mara Expedition Camp positions itself squarely in the heart of magnificent predator country, and the camp's traversing rights of both Mara North Conservancy and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve give guests the flexibility to explore far and wide in search of arguably the finest wildlife sightings on earth. This site was handpicked by National Geographic Explorers-In-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert. After searching tirelessly for hours in search of the 'perfect spot' for this magical camp, they ended up for a sundowner on the very spot where Mara Expedition is located today. They looked around and realised 'this is the place'. The camp itself consists of four custom-designed tents of light-colored flowing canvas open on the horizontal side with canopied ceilings. Set at ground level, and shaded by the riverine forest, this camp is designed for those who want the particulars of a Great Plains Conservation property inside the Masai Mara Reserve. En-suite facilities including flush loos, bucket showers and tapped hot/cold water ensure utter comfort along with 24-Hour electricity, fine dining and exceptional hospitality. Each of the tents is decorated with a nod to the style of early exploration and discovery - an eclectic yet coordinated assembly of what early travelers may have carried - items such as brass chandeliers, old Indian chests, local natural materials - hand-picked by us at markets throughout Africa. The camp's aura is refreshing - of romance and exploration. Mara Expedition Camp is, despite its romantic appeal, a place for the ardent safari-goer. One does not beget the other and in fact we believe they both make for a spectacular experience. Spend your days out - all day - exploring deep within the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. You'll not have to look far for wildlife - the glade of trees surrounding the camp is prime leopard territory, and the camp is a superior location to witness the great wildebeest and zebra migration from your tent. The new open-sided vehicles are custom designed by Dereck & Beverly Joubert (National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence, acclaimed filmmakers and Great Plains Conservation co-founders) allowing for the very best equipment for photographic opportunities. Mara Expedition Camp offers among the widest range of activities anywhere in the greater Maasai Mara - extensive game drives, balloon safaris (at extra cost), local village visits (authentic) and unrivaled access to superior wildlife habitat as well as visits to local schools and Great Plains Conservation community projects in the surrounding area. ... more   less

“The room just to the left of the common room has a great view of the water, and although the path to other rooms is just outside, the trees block anyone from being able to see in - so you have privacy while still being close. But yes, you can hear noise from the common area.”
