Welcome to Angama, inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.

Being a fan of "Out of Africa" and realizing that the Angama Mara was the site where the movie was filmed, I just could not resist to book a stay there. We were truly amazed at the view of the Maasai Mara from our "tent" and from the hotel restaurant. We stayed for 7 nights. Only one camp/section of the resort was opened due to the COVID situation, we felt all of the guests were comfortably spaced out while having meals at the restaurant. The only exception was that on one rainy night, we have to stay inside the enclosed restaurant to watch the parade/dance, our group just stayed for a few minutes since we were not comfortable seeing another guest smoking indoor and within arms length of each other. Going out for game drives are the most memorable part of our visit. Fred (our guide) was very knowledgeable and hard working. He is a bird expert and even carries a bird encyclopedia with him! We started at sunrise everyday, and on a few occasions, we stayed out until sunset! Fred was very attentive and took good care of us when we were caught in torrential rain showers. As you may know, the weather is unpredictable here and when it rains, it pours hard! So, having a rain jacket would come in handy. Fred even serves us picnics (breakfast + lunch). Having picnics at the Mara is such a pleasurable experience! Complaints and Cautions - Since the resort is located in the wild, there are plentiful of insects flying around. Insect repellent and Sunscreen are a must. Just be mindful while walking within the resort grounds, you may encounter a friendly zebra. Also, the monkeys are quite aggressive and they howl very loud. While dining at the hotel restaurant, we noticed the hotel owner and upper management were having meals at the nearby table. During the entire time, no one bothered to come over and did any sort of greetings or introduction. Having stayed at many luxury resorts, this is quite awkward because they will gladly greet and meet you unless they are very occupied with VVIPs. Well, you can say at the Angama Mara, they very much respect the privacy of resort guests.

Don’t know where to start or how to end this review. Everything, Everyone and The Lodge itself is spectacular. If your considering don’t consider, just book it and you won’t regret it. The views, the rooms, the surrounding, the game drives, the staff, the food was above and beyond amazing. I worked with Tamsin arranging everything before our arrival and she was wonderful to work with. Sophie was our game driver and she was amazing! She knows the Mara like the back of her hand and could tackle some of the rain soaked tracks, where others wouldn’t dare to venture. She is a true professional in the Mara. The rooms are stocked with Gin, Whiskey and wine which is all included. There is a beautiful pool with views. We were there in March so a bit too cool to swim. The restaurant was great! Always has great drinks (alcohol and non-alcohol) and food ready in hand. The rooms had astounding views of the Mara and binoculars are providing for game viewing. We saw the big 5 and so much more on our game drives! I hated leaving Angama. They say Africa is a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so glad Angama made it a perfect one. Definitely have a yearning to go back at some point in my life. Thank you angama for everything.

I am so sorry that your beautiful review on TripAdvisor slipped past me and I am only replying now. The world is upside down thanks to the pandemic but that is n o excuse for my lack of manners. From your gorgeous title, to your unrestrained enthusiasm and to the kind words about the team we simply love this review - thank you so much. I see you cracked the girl power team in Tamsin and Sophie and I know they are both tickled pink by your comments. Please don't thank us. It's our great joy to welcome our guests and spoil them rotten and without them we would be nothing. How lucky we are to have such wonderful guests. Warmest thanks Nicky

What a magical experience we had for our delayed honeymoon at ANGAMA! We are avid travelers and live in NYC, and it's easy to say that this place treated us like absolute royalty. Also the level of privacy you have and the precautions Kenya is taking makes traveling during COVID stress free- go visit! The staff went above and beyond to make every day and night a special occasion. They never said no, they always had a smile on their face, and they truly just wanted to make us happy. The accommodations of the 'tented suites' are NEXT LEVEL GORGEOUS. The views from every angle of your room are unmatched to anything you will experience in your life. Our safari guide Jackson was a true rockstar, he worked his butt off to get us to see the best parts of wildlife and made everyday a true adventure. Terry, our waitress/butler was beyond sweet to the point we wish we could take her home with us! The food was fantastic everytime we sat down to eat. She made every meal, picnic, and special surprise truly worth it. Joseph (spelling?) the camp manager was amazing and went above and beyond to help accommodate anything we needed. It was hard to leave this place, but we had a trip of a lifetime!

Dear Amanda Thank you so much for choosing to come and stay with us on your honeymoon. Your gracious feedback on how the Angama family cared for you made my heart swell with pride. The team is the heart and soul of the lodge and is by far the best I have ever had the joy of working alongside. There is scarcely a review on TripAdvisor where our guests don't mention every single staff member by name who cared for them and yours is no exception. Jackson, Terry and Joseph all join me in sending you warmest thanks for your lovely review. Oh, and the chefs were delighted when I told them how much you enjoyed the food. Heartfelt thanks Nicky

When you first enter the Hotel, you are transported to an architectural masterpiece of triangles, cones and cubes…. But then you enter the main lodge, and the walls of endless glass, and your senses are overwhelmed. The plains thousands of feet below, are breathtaking… and continue to be… even after the 4th day.. we could not get over every moment of the endless beauty. The Villas are designed to maximize these views.. with one wall being solid glass… so from your bed, from your room, from your shower, you are at the top of the cliffs. Be sure to leave your glass doors open at night [screens protect] as you will hear the elephants, the hyenas, the Cape Buffalo… a symphony of nature. Up on the plateau itself there are and abundance of life, and our game drives, we saw more variety than we have ever seen [and we have been to Africa more than 20 times..]. Our room butler Serada, and our game driver, Kenneth, showed a kindness, a care, a sense of humor and a willingness to share that made us feel so welcome. Thank you both for your beautiful spirits and love. No request was too large or too small... William kept the room spotless and always freshly supplied. The food was perfection, whether the Eggs Benedict for Breakfast, the home baked pastries, the flawless mixture of Indian and African spicing that was magic without being overwhelming to Western tastebuds…. The presentation and plating of each dish was beautiful… hats off to the chefs! We travel extensively to the Conde Nast top 100 [a bit of a hobby], so when we say this compares with the best food anywhere, we mean it. Make sure to spend time in your villa [ don’t go on every game drive as you will exhaust yourself – and each game drive offers something magical… you will never see it all…]. The villa and the view are once in a lifetime moments… The "Gift Shop" is misnamed, it is like the best high end store, again with amazing architecture and high quality products... The have some African cutting edge designers side by side with historic masai implements and carvings. Frida was fantastic in sharing the history of each work. Lastly, Make sure to take a Balloon Ride... They float at treetop level and allow you to see an endless array of animals and paths that you would never see from the Ground Level. Lastly, the day we left the President of Kenya was arriving for a stay... That speaks volumes!

Wow - what an incredible review and all the more so from guests who have been to Africa more than 20 times not to mention CNT Top 100 collectors. I am quite relieved that we didn't know this before your arrival :) Thank you from us all - Sedera, Kenneth, William and Fridah, together with the rest of the Angama family - you simply took our breath away with your wonderfully kind words. Coming out of the challenges of the past year and heading into our busy season your review has given us that extra spurt of confidence, joy and energy that we put into each day delighting our guests. The chefs are tickled pink that you enjoyed the dishes they prepared for you and asked me to extend a special thank you. Thank you for coming to stay with us - it means more than you could imagine. Warmest regards Nicky

This was our second camp on our amazing trip celebrating my birthday. The views were more than we even imagined. Truly stunning. The tents and main area were also gorgeous and so unique. However, the views and structure of the camp provide a luxury feel that the staff and dining don't quite live up to. We didn't have a single meal here that we loved, and the service felt... distant. Part of what makes Africa special is the connection to those who work at the camps, and we felt as if they were somewhat held at arm's length, which was a bit sad for us. While I recognize and admire their effort to come off as very polished, it doesn't show through in implementation. For example, the phone system presented to us for us to let them know when we needed someone to walk us at night did not work. I would have much rather used the simple shine the flashlight or call for assistance like at other camps, and been able to make it to meals and game drives on time. Also, there is no comparing the value between this and luxury camps with Great Plains (Mara Plains, Mara Nyika). Great Plains includes excellent camera equipment and lenses in their rate for guests (and it is a lower rate). They also transfer all photos to a brand new USB free of charge, whereas Angama charges for the USB. In general, there were more upcharges at Angama than other luxury properties we have enjoyed. But, it is hard not to give this place 5 stars. Not only because of the views and beautiful rooms, but the GUIDING. This surprised me. I honestly thought this place would have brilliant accommodations, service, and food, and then would rest on those laurels for the game drives. NOT SO! Our guide Tito (Titus), was the BEST of the trip. He was passionate, well spoken, and had a clear plan each game drive. He was efficient and great at picking up on what we were interested in, had already seen, and wanted to see. In 2 short nights, we had incredible lion and leopard sightings AND saw black rhino! With a calf! He did a great job negotiating around other vehicles and lined us up nicely for photos. I would highly recommend him as a guide. Truly, Tito made this property shine, above all the bells and whistles.

Thank you so much for coming to stay with us on your recent Kenyan safari and for the lovely feedback on Titus. He was thrilled to hear how highly you regarded his guiding skills. I was saddened to hear that you felt the service and food at Angama were not up to par and would like to extend my apologies for not delighting you on both counts. I was somewhat bewildered on reading your review as in over 90% of the reviews we have had on TripAdvisor have been focused almost entirely on how much our guests love our staff. I have shared your feedback with the whole team and they asked me to thank you for raising these issues as we head into our busy season after a year of Covid challenges. With thanks Nicky
