I stayed in a club level room for 10 days. The room was very nice and spacious. Definitely better than 4 stars but maybe not fully 5 as some other hotels in Beijing.

I have been swimming many times in this hotel pool without issue. Maybe your friend had a compromised immune system beyond the water quality alone? Main thing to beware is not to ingest tap water in China. Even though some high end hotels filter water, I never take the risk. Please enjoy your time in China and try not to worry too much - I have never had food issues after many trips to China and have experienced more food poisoning in my home country of Australia!
