Detailed Reviews
There is a lot to like about this HK treasure of a lodge! The headline of this review says it all. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would heartily recommend Golden Crown Guesthouse to backpackers.
ROOM. For a traveling family of 6 members, owners Elvis and Kenny reserved 1 quad room and 1 triple room (both located at the newly renovated 6th floor) from April 9th to 12th.
The rates could have been cheaper, but since our scheduled stay was in time for an IT exhibit, we forked out the peak rate (maximum of 600 HKD a night).
Our rooms were exactly as shown in the website:
- Each room had a TV, a phone and a fully functioning A/C.
- The beds had useable under-drawers (in lieu of a closet) to store our luggage.
- There was foldable table and chair in case we wanted to have breakfast in bed.
- On the counter were a hot pot and mugs to match the number of guests.
- The rooms had an extra outlet for charging phones and powering up the hair dryer.
- The staff was thoughtful enough to supply hangers (arranged neatly in the nook behind the door).
The size of the bathroom was atypical of Hong Kong. The space seemed to be fashioned after a walk-in closet – sliding doors and all – and came with liquid body soap, shampoo, toilet paper and towels. The hot and cold shower had excellent water pressure. We liked the fact that we had so much space to move around (dance even) in the bathroom of the triple room.
There were times when we could overhear other guests talking at the hallway. This was not any problem for us, as the guesthouse was generally quiet at night (probably because everyone else was out... haggling at the night market... or snoozing from shopping exhaustion).
SERVICE. If we were to rate customer care, we would give Golden Crown a straight A. The online booking and payment system on the website was already efficient to begin with. We made the reservation online and paid only 100 HKD (per room) within 24 hours to confirm the transaction. The balance was to be paid in cash immediately upon arrival.
Kenny went the extra mile and saw to it that our needs were taken care of. Without our asking, he gave us a 50 percent rebate on the last day of our stay for checking out early. He also provided us with login details in case we wanted to use the computer (free of charge).
There is no room service, restaurant or cafe (much less a swimming pool or an official lobby). Just step out of the guesthouse though and you will find a number of places to get a nibble. Apart from local eateries and noodle shops -- fastfood joints McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King and Yoshinoya are all within walking distance.
LOCATION. By far, Golden Crown Guesthouse is the best sited lodging house we have ever stayed at in Hong Kong. Despite its narrow entrance and the limited elevators servicing the building (one for odd-numbered floors, another for even-numbered floors), the guesthouse is right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui and is accessible to and from the airport day and night.
During the day, the bus to take is the A21 and from midnight to 5:00 a.m., the N21. The fare is 23 HKD per way and can be debited from the Octopus card. For MRT takers, the guesthouse can be accessed from TST Exits A1 and D1.
Sightseeing was a breeze. The moment we stepped out of Golden Crown, we found ourselves in the high-end Tsim Sha Tsui neighborhood where jewelry shops, towering malls, restaurants, and specialty shops abound block after block.
Kowloon Park is literally across the street (beside the mosque), while the Star Ferry Terminal, the Avenue of the Stars and the Hong Kong Cultural Center are a leisurely walk away. We took the “long cut” (crossed the street, followed two blocks of electronic gadget shops, turned left to explore the high-end shopping block and followed the signs leading to the tourist sites).
If for some queer reason you’d rather not stay at Golden Crown, some nearby options include the Mira, Imperial Hotel and Yufai Guesthouse (same floor). We heard that Taisan Guesthouse is also close by. However, with an appointment and reservation system as efficient and as prompt as Golden Crown’s, we found it needless to look into other housing alternatives.
Our overall take: Although not a hotel, Golden Crown Guesthouse offers better value for money and service than many so-called “standard” budget hotels in Hong Kong. No pampering and luxurious amenities are to be expected, yet this family business delivers what it does best: to provide economical accommodation to backpackers without compromising their security, mobility and convenience.
Tips:
1. For a smooth check-in, have your money changed ahead to the local currency.
2. Do make reservations ahead (ideally a month or two before your scheduled arrival). Golden Crown is popular among backpackers, so rooms sell out fast.
3. Request to be billeted at rooms in the 6th floor.
4. When taking the bus, tell the driver to drop you off at the Tsim Sha Tsui MRT (yes, the bus stop is close to the MRT exit) across Kowloon Park. Counting the number of bus stops won’t work, especially when you travel at night.
5. Do not miss out the discounted ticket rates that Golden Crown is giving exclusively to patrons. Each Disneyland or Ocean Park ticket is at least 30 HKD cheaper than the regular price.

I would have given Golden Crown a rating of five if only it has a microwave oven and a pantry like most hostels. But putting that aside, I couldn't ask for more. Of course, the room is small but unless you're in the more expensive hotels, the size is just typical for the price. We booked a room with double bed and one single bed. It has a flat TV but not much English channels to choose from (but then, we didn't go to HK to watch TV).
The hostel is very mindful of the needs of the guests. The room is provided with three ceramic mugs for coffee, three plastic mugs for brushing our teeth, three adapters, liquid soap, shampoo, toilet paper, and towels. The comforter is wonderful, it made waking up in the morning really difficult. There is also a hot and cold water dispenser right outside our room as well as a public computer for those who want to browse the net. And yes, wifi is free and very fast. My greatest concern before I saw the room was the toilet. I had read a lot of stuff about HK hostels having very tiny toilets with shower heads right above the bowls so I was really very apprehensive. But my fears were allayed by Kenny (I think he's the owner) who assured me that the toilet is very nice. And it is true. The toilet is pretty spacious with a shower area separated by a sliding glass door. Our room has a window but nothing to be seen outside except the back view of another building so we just kept the curtains drawn. The pillow is okay but the bed is a bit hard though it isn't a problem for us. Housekeeping also makes sure that the room is cleaned everyday and towels are changed. It is such a relief to go back to a well made-up room after a tiring day.
Checking in is a breeze. Kenny's assistant met us and asked for our invoice number. Then we paid the balance in cash. We also bought there discounted tickets for Disneyland, Ocean Park, and Ngong Ping 360 standard cable car (btw, if you decide to visit Ngong Ping, make sure that you have your passport or any ID with you since the vouchers from Golden Crown says 'for overseas visitors"). The hostel is very clean and the entrance to the rooms is protected by a password to avoid outsiders from getting inside. When we left early in the morning for our flight, no one was there so we just left the room key inside the box outside the reception. There is only one elevator for odd number floors and another for even numbers. Golden Crown's reception area is at the fifth floor where our room is also located. We haven't experienced any queuing while we we there. The ground floor has a security guard and is free of seedy characters unlike in other places.
The entrance to Golden Crown could easily be missed but just bear in mind that it's between Citibank and Standard Chartered. The A21/N21 bus stop to the airport is across the street while coming from the airport, the bus stop is just a short walk away to the hostel (same side. Across the bus stop is Kowloon Park and the Mosque). The MTR is almost beside the building, making it very convenient to travel to different destinations.
Just a tip: For those who can't live without McDonalds, KFC, and Burger King, the said fastfood outlets are just along the second street from the hostel (facing the direction of Mongkok). After KFC, there's also a small shop which sells lots of souvenir items at wholesale prices. No need to bargain!
For money changers, go to Chungking Mansion which is also quite near Golden Crown. Just walk towards the ferry. Chungking is on the same side as Golden Crown. The second money changer (left side) near the entrance opens early and also provides competitive rates.
I initially booked another hostel in Chungking since Golden Crown was full when I first inquired. Fortunately, a few months later I was able to get a room so I just cancelled my other reservation. I will definitely stay here if ever I visit Hongkong again and I won't hesitate to recommend this hostel to other budget travelers like me.

My husband and I chose this hotel mainly because of the good reviews, the very affordable price, and the strategic location.
We got the renovated couple's room which has a private bath/toilet and a double bed. The room is quite small, but you get what you pay for. Next time we return, we'l be booking the quadruple room. But we managed nevertheless, since we're both of small physical built. Just enough space for 2 medium-sized luggages, but not more.
There's free water dispenser right outside the room (which is a plus). The towels were very thin - but sufficient for our use and changed daily.
The only free amenities are body wash/gel and shampoo dispensers attached to the wall. Everything else - bring your own. Yes, including toothbrush/paste. There's hair dryer in the toilet/bath. The sink was really small, so big people might find it difficult to use.
Location is PERFECT ! A21 cityflyer bustop #13 (Tsim Sha Tsui) actually goes past it, so once you get off the bus, you just have to walk back a little (yes, past Holiday Inn but right before Giordano). It is right in the intersection of Nathan-TST main MTR station too! Building has a side exit if you take the freight elevator, which has MTR D2 exit right in front.
Elevator is quite small, but sufficient for 2 people with their luggages.
For breakfast, we simply take a quick walk to Silvercord mall food court (Food Republic - opens at 8am) which has a side entrance along Haiphong Rd.
Like I said, the hotel location is just so convenient that we usually go back to drop off our shopping haul then head back out to do some more shopping. Which means we spend more as get to shop more hahaha.
They were also very kind to allow us to leave our luggages upon check-out, while we go for some last-minute shopping.
Some quick shopping tips while at TST:
- Biggest Uniqlo store seems to be the one in Miramar, which is also along Nathan.
- For med-range to high-end specialty restaurants, visit iSquare mall, also along Nathan but opposite end of Miramar
- So many Le Saunda (mid-range priced shoe store selling good quality leather boots) shops nearby!
- So many Sasa stores nearby too! These are the hot-pink colored stores selling various cosmetics, perfumes, and health products.
- Take time to stroll and explore the nearby streets - you'll find a lot of interesting stores and restaurants.
When departing towards airport, you can either take the K3 airport shuttle or the A21 citybus - both bus stops just right across the street, a little bit to the left. We took the A21 bus as it's only 33 HKD, versus if you take airport express which is about 90 hkd.
We'll definitely return to this hotel - but will be getting a bigger room next time!

Stayed in renovated room with 2 single bed for 4 nights. As expected, the room & the toilet was small but surprisingly clean. The housekeeping lady will come everyday to clean up the room & change the towels. They didnt provide electric kettle but you still can get your hot/warm/cold water from the water dispenser provided. In fact they also provided 2 bottles of drinking water upon check in. The water dispenser also produce ice cubes. You can get iron in the cupboard above the water dispenser. There was no cupboard in the room but you still can hang your cloth behind the room's door. You can buy discounted tickets for Disneyland, Ocean Park, The Peak Tram, Ngong Ping Cable Car at a cheaper price here. Dont worry, it was an open date ticket. They also sell ferry tickets to Macau & provide airport transfer to & fro the guesthouse. I experienced 3 different guys during our stay there and all of them were very helpful and able to speak understandable English.
Location wise, located between Standard Chartered Bank & Citibank. The MRT station was really near & you can choose Exit A2 if you prefer escalator rather than climbing up the stairs. You can also walk around 500 meters to Avenue of Stars or to China Ferry Terminal from the guesthouse and there were many shops for you to stroll around. As for Muslims, there was a big mosque across the road & there were few halal restaurants too. Not to be forgotten there were many massage place for you to try here.
Only 1 flaw about this guesthouse was, the elevator was small & slow. Since the guesthouse located in the public building, you will be sharing the elevator with tenants too. And they wont be hesitated to cut your queue since the elevator clearly stated to give priority to the tenants with children or elderly. Take note that there were 2 elevators provided. The left one will go to odd level number only and the right one will go to even level number.
Overall, I had a good stay & will definitely recommend to everyone who is not fussy about space but still looking for a cheap & clean place to stay.

Golden Crown Guesthouse may not be a 5 star hotel.. but i rate the people running the place a definite 5 star. We were booked there from May 2 to 6 but we arrived in Hongkong a day early. When i took a chance to call them if they can make arrangement for us to check in a day earlier, their reply was to come over and for us to bring our luggage. when we arrived, the room (superior quadruple) was ready. It was very clean, fresh linens, 2 pillows on each bed, blankets, 4 towels which are changed everyday, soap and shampoo provided. The airconditioning works fine, hot water, hair blower and lcd tv on the wall. There's telephone in the room, good wifi 24 hours with no charge and hot and cold water dispenser provided outside the room.. The housekeeper not only changes the towels and empties the trash everyday, they also clean the room and changes the linens. When we went out to shop on our first day there, i informed the housekeeper Beth and Lina that we will be out and that we have laptops and gadgets in the room. During the entire duration of our stay there, they would tidy the room while we were out and all our stuff remained intact, nothing went missing. Other than the great location of the Guesthouse, i highly recommend it for the people running the place.

My mom and sister stayed in a quadruple room.
PROS:1.The staff are friendly and accommodating.
2. The room and bath are cleaned everyday. Fresh towels are provided daily.
3. 24 hour hot and cold shower and free drinking water
4. Central location: MTR Exit D2 Tsim Sha Tsui is jus2 minutes walk. Kowloon Park is just across the street. Waking distance to shops, mall, restos (try Tsui Wah Restaurant- very affordable chinese resto which offers continental breakfast) fastfood (KFC, McDo), local attractions like Avenue of Star, Heritage 1881 etc,
5. 24 hour security with CCTV
6. Offer discounted tickets to Disney and Ngong Ping360.
7. A21 (cityflyer from and to airport) bus stop is just 3 minutes walk
8. Free Wifi and if you don't have a laptop there is a PC provided in the common area
CONS:
1. Lift is small
2. Room is small with little space to move around. But then you get what you pay for and by Hong Kong standard this is good enough.
3. No closet to hang your clothes
4. Fluffy pillows please.
5. More English TV channels please.
Overall, I would recommend this if you are looking for a budget hostel to stay in. Will definitely stay again.

5. 24 hour security with CCTV

+1
A month ahead our trip I already reserved a room in Golden Crown, I was praying that there's still available room for my family because I heard a lot of good reviews about it. Lucky for us we still got a room :).
We're stayed in the quad room in 5th floor and on our last day we had to transfer to another quad room in 6th floor, but its okay since they helped us move our things. The room is cozy and clean especially the bathroom, its like staying in a small hotel and not a hostel. The wifi is fast and there's a free hot and cold water in the dispenser. The location is very good since its near the mtr station and Avenue of the Stars is just a few steps away. I'll be back here for sure :).

Nice location in the midst of TST. Great value for money. Neat. The owner is accommodating even he's busy. They also offer maps, adapters and service water. Wifi connection is good. They also offer discounted tickets to Disneyland and other tour packages. Will definitely go back here to stay in HK.

If you are on a budget and just looking for a place to sleep and put all your luggage and go out for the whole day then this is the right place for you.
Location is very good. It is right beside MTR Exit A2 of Tsim Sha Tsui station which is very convenient as the MTR can take you almost anywhere in HK. The bus from and to the airport stop at the front of the inn which is very convenient (takes around 30-45mins from the airport). There are several malls, outlet shops, fastfood chains (KFC, McDonalds), restaurants that is just walking distance. Also, the Avenue of Stars is just walking distance from the inn.
The building of the inn is rather old and there isn't any fancy decorations around but it feels safe because there are CCTV cameras all around and all rooms/hallways have electronic codes/locks. The elevator is small which can accommodate around 3 -4 persons.
We got the renovated/deluxe room for 4 persons. The room is clean but rather small (quite common for budget inns). It really is just a place to rest but we were able to sleep comfortably.
Bathroom is also small but clean. They also provide free wifi to all guests.
They water dispenser they have at the corridor is a good plus since we did not have to buy bottled water each time we go out the hotel. Staff was very friendly. You can also leave your baggage here even if you have already checked-out.
Another big plus is that you can buy discounted tickets here for almost all attractions in HK.
We saved a lot by buying tickets here.
I would gladly stay at this inn when I go back to Hong Kong.

Yes, you're right ROM207. Good to hear we had same experience with Golden Crown Guesthouse. 😊
i think yes
i don't know if they accept late check in but you could ask them through their website. Based on my experience, they promptly answer my queries. YES, they accept luggage early because we arrive 2 hours early before the usual check-in time. I don't know if they will accept the night before your check in.
