This hotel has got a very distinct charm. It is certainly not of those big hotel types, but it has got a unique appeal that takes slightly back into history. It is historical in its appearance but modern in its comfort. Though I stayed two nights at this hotel on our whirlwind tour to Indonesia but in the end, I...

We upgraded to a pool view room and were happy we did, the balcony was great and pool close by. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the bar waiters knew us by name. Alcohol is expensive in Java, so if you like an afternoon glass of wine, you better hit happy hour when drinks are 1/2 price. A...

The pictures of this hotel are far better than the hotel itself. Yes it has some history and I suppose it's supposed to be authentic. But this place was seriously dated, room was tiny, bathroom was small too but it was so old you could see the yellow stains in the sink and shower. I felt dirty even after showering....

A friend recommended this beautiful hotel for my trip to Jogjakarta. Everything was great .. nice check-in, beautiful building and room, lovely courtyard in the evening for drinks n dinner, friendly staff (except for a couple of surly staff manning the reception in the evening). I was hoping to sit out in the balcony but soon realised that it faced...

Upon arrival, we were escorted to an anteroom just behind the lobby where we were served tea and sweets while the staff member processed the paperwork for check in. Our room (337) was at the back of the hotel with a small balcony overlooking the city. The room was spacious and well appointed. The pool is gorgeous. Breakfast was included...

Check in was fast and the welcoming drink and snack were the ones to be remembered. The traditional bakpia served as welcoming snack was so exceptional that me and my spouse decided to order some boxes to bring home. The stay, room cleanliness, amenity, and the quality of property are still something good about the hotel. Although we did not...

I absolutely loved this hotel... It had a fantastic colonial feel to it. It was so peaceful to listen to the gamelan music playing from our balcony. Our room was on the small side, but was very clean and comfortable. They have a great bar. The breakfast was fantastic and their coffee is great. The staff are friendly and helpful....

I visit Yogja for business on a quarterly basis and tried this hotel even if its a 15min drive to work. I arranged for airport pick up & to my surprise, a vintage 1967 Mercedes was waiting for me in the arrival areal! Half way to the hotel though, the car suddenly stopped because it ran out of gas. It...

We spent two days of our wedding anniversary here and enjoyed every minute. Splendid rooms and superb service. Breakfast not impressive for European standards though.. will come back after trip to Borobudur.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This legenderay hotel was initially built as private estate in 1918. Through the ensuing decades, the property changed hands a number of times, until a Dutch caretaker turned it into Pensioner Hotel. The Phoenix name was deliberately chosen by the last proprietor who hoped that it would remain intact forever, believing in the ancient myth of The Phoenix, the sacred fire bird symbolizing regeneration throughout eternity. The Phoenix Hotel is elegantly situated in down town Yogyakarta, the cradle of Javanese civilization. The legendary Malioboro Street is just nearby, while the world herigate Borobudur and Prambanan temples are only an hour drive. Yogyakarta's cultural heritage and picturesque settings emit a distinctive charm that seldom fails its visitors. The 144 beautifully appointed rooms are reflecting the ambiance of bygone era wrapped in modern comfort facilities, enabling its occupant to celebrate a glorious past without losing the beauty of contemporary living. ... more   less
