Lovely setting, but front desk could care less about honoring check-in time and repeatedly lied to us about it. When I asked to speak to the manager, told he would be there in 5 minutes - 20 minutes later was told he "was having lunch" and was not available.

The hotel is beautiful and serene - an old Convent transformed into a boutique hotel. Lots of charm and authenticity which I loved. Room was comfortable and large. Nice sky light as well with auto drapes. It is true that you need earplugs as the doors are thing and walls are as well - you can hear anything going on in the hallway so if a neighbor or staff member goes by you can easily be awoken. The pool leaves a lot to be desired- far too small to actually ever be used. I found the staff to be average and not very warm or sincere - especially the reception. A young woman checked me in and I spoke to 2 other gentlemen during my 3 night stay. They were all very transactional, and not super friendly. Also, they seemed very uninterested whenever I asked a basic question or request. And no, there was no language barrier I as speak fluent Spanish. Breakfast is nice and they team there was probably the nicest. I did eat on the upper terrace one morning and the service was extremely slow. They woman apologized when I came down after waiting over 15 mins. Staff doesn’t understand the anticipation part of service— for instance, they’ll bring you coffee at your table, but every time I had to ask twice for milk and sugar. This shouldn’t happen at a place of this caliber. Overall I don’t think the price matches the experience. Besides a nice setting — service goes a long way and this place is lacking.

Beautifully historic and quirky but sloppy service. This converted convent has a rambling and classy feel which is sadly let down by poorly trained staff. However, Byron who helped with our bags etc and Freddie in the restaurant were both excellent. I think the manager, Diego, who seemed invisible, needs to teach the staff to make guests feel welcome instead of the bored and sometimes surly attitude of many, especially in the restaurant. Our room was lovely but not well cleaned eg toilet paper forgotten, amenities not replaced, dusty wardrobe. Lovely roof terrace but why were the leaves not swept off the cushions. This could be fabulous but it isn’t yet.

Had a really bad experience here. Was given a room that was attached to another room with only a thin door and spiral staircase between us. The person in the room actually came up the stairs and very aggressively tried to open the door. I contacted the front desk and they acted like I was being silly. As a solo female traveler, this was not okay. Worse yet, I could hear EVERYTHING they did in the other room. For such an expensive hotel, I was shocked. After asking them multiple times to fix this, at 11pm they finally moved me to another room, which very much smelled like mold. I had to travel the next day, so I had no time or energy to find another hotel. As an apology, they knocked off a whole $20 from my $200+ bill. Still waiting for that credit. Do not stay here. There are so many other nicer, better hotels in Antigua that actually serve their customers. I am still upset at how they handled this situation.

The Hotel overall was great, although we had some issues with the smell of our room. It was really bad. The service and attention of the employees was amazing which took over the bad things. The chef was amazing he even made some cookies for us!!!

This boutique hotel is in a great location for visiting Antigua, but is also a little quieter than right in the center of town. The accommodations are exceptional and the staff is incredibly welcoming and helpful for booking tours, making restaurant reservations and answering any questions you may have. The beds are very comfortable too. One thing to be aware of - a lot of wedding festivities happen at or near the hotel and it can be noisy with music and fireworks. Overall, I would recommend it as a romantic spot!

Our stay was terrible! They downgraded us and put us in a room that was no where near the description of what we booked and paid for. It felt more like a scam and no one cared enough to help us. Finally on our next to last day the GM Diego “attempted” to address our concerns but everyone likes to make excuses rather than solutions. The hotel would be much better off with a manager that cared about the guests. There was hair on the walls of our shower which means it was not cleaned from the prior guest. The room doors are lock and key and the maid left our door unlocked when they were finished. At breakfast the napkins were stained, there was a hair on our table and I was brought an orange juice with a big in it. Overall what was supposed to be a romantic getaway turned out to be a disappointing disaster! I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Pro: - beautiful property - great location - friendly staff! a nice thoughtful surprise was a slice of cheesecake with happy birthday written on the plate for my husband's birthday! - clean Cons: - Slept so horribly because it is soooo LOUD! I can hear every single word of the guests next door. Slept so horribly, even with ear plugs. The room I was in was connected and was left unlock, which was strange. - Originally booked this property due to the partnership with Hyatt. After much and back and forth I wasn't able to book through Hyatt even though it is advertised on their website as an SLH. Customer support from El Convento was useless, so I gave up. It was a frustrating experience with the booking process. El Convento said to reach out to Hyatt and then Hyatt kept saying it's on El Convento. (Cue the meme of Spiderman pointing at each other here). And yes, I even looked at different dates, a year out, and unable to book on Hyatt, yet there was availability on El Convento's website. - They offer transportation but for double the price - No windows in our room, so it was dark and felt like a cave

We stayed two nights at this central hotel in Antigua in a Master Suite King Jacuzzi in a comfortable and quiet room at back of hotel on main floor. Jacuzzi is outside and quite small, but the fireplace and firelog made the room cozy. Linens and bed were extremely comfortable. Breakfast selection good but sometimes we received toast and sometimes just white rolls. Dinner at the hotel was highly rated but just average - there are plenty of other options around. Just a block away you can find a great spot for a traditional Guatemalan lunch at La Cuevita de Los Urquizu. Three blocks short walk from Santa Catalina Arch. Would have given 5 stars but the management was quirky (when asked for a refill of our in-room bottle of water tried to sell me bottled water) and less responsive than a typical high class boutique hotel. Would like to see more smiles and welcomes from the management team (perhaps a small token/drink on checkin?). The rest of staff were excellent!

I will start my saying that this is a gorgeous hotel located a very short distance from the center of Antigua and everything was very nice during our stay. The reason I gave it three stars however is because we felt that the pricing was deceptive. We booked it on Expedia and when we got to the hotel we were told that it was going to be more than we had expected. Not much, but because it came down to about $375 per night, any additional charges felt like a real hit. But that wasn’t all. We signed the final bill when we left but when we got the credit card charge, it was $35 higher for our two night stay. We wrote to the hotel via email asking my discrepancy, and they told us it’s because they charge in the local currency. We felt like this was very deceptive. If they were going to charge in the local currency, they should have given us the final bill in quetzales not in US dollars. Because we paid by credit card, we would have gotten a very good exchange rate. Their explanation via email for the additional $35 was because they charged in the local currency. They told us the rate they use for conversion which was outrageous. Hence the $35 additional cost. Unfortunately this ruined what would’ve been an otherwise very nice stay for us. We don’t appreciate the deceptive pricing and would not recommend this hotel to others. There are plenty of other great hotels in Antigua that charge fairly.

Dear Laura, Thank you for your recent review where you indicated a fabulous hospitality experience except for the hotels exchange rate. It is quite common for hotels in foreign countries to quote room rates in US dollars and post transactions in local currency and mark up slightly the exchange rate its uses. I verified with other competitive five-star hotels prior to writing, and they too engage in this hotel common practice. On behalf the team and myself, please accept our apologies to you because of this internal practice which caused you this dissatisfaction to an otherwise pleasant stay. Best regards and again thanks for your sincere feedback.
