The purpose of our reservation was to surprise our mother (my mother-in-law), as we wanted to treat her to a luxury hotel stay in Antigua for the weekend. I *specifically* searched for a luxurious room, something "nicer-than-average" so it would be a treat for her. So when I saw Hotel Convento Santa Catalina's "Deluxe Double Room, Garden View, Courtyard Area" described online along with beautiful pictures, I decided to reserve it. Instead of receiving what I paid for, when we arrived we were given a hotel room which in no way matched the hotel's online description. Nothing "deluxe" about it, nor was it "Garden View." It was an absolutely BASIC budget room as would be expected from any economy Guatemalan hotel. When we went to discuss the discrepancy with the manager on duty, she acknowledged that the room we received was NOT one of those in the description and pictures online. However, all of those rooms (the "nice ones on the reservation page") were all booked. So basically they sold us one thing, but gave us another, and hoped we wouldn't notice. Since she was unable to move us to one of the nicer rooms we paid for, we advised her that we'd be leaving. She reiterated that she couldn't provide a refund, but that someone in upper management would contact us that week to discuss resolution options. The most amicable of these would be to simply return at a later date and stay in one of the rooms that we paid for. So even though they admit that the room we were given was NOT one of those described on our reservation, they've now offered us "a single night stay" in lieu of a refund for the 2 nights we paid for in advance. No refund, not the 2 nights we paid for, but instead a "single night stay" is what they're offering us to compensate for their mistake which ruined the birthday surprise for our mother. Obviously, I would recommend others to avoid this hotel.…
I was booked here through Kimkim travel agency and I'm very happy with this pick for hotel during my time in Antigua. From what I understand, the building of this hotel is over 400 years old which is really cool! The staff I dealt at front desk as well as Arco restaurant staff were all really nice and patience with my lack of Spanish knowledge which is helpful since I travel all over the world. The room was spacious in my opinion and there's hot water so no worries about freezing in the morning. The wifi is spotty but works well in restaurant area, I also liked the food at the restaurant. The location is in the most iconic part of Antigua and the church bells do go off quite a bit but I liked it since it was something different and represents the culture there. If you don't mind what I wrote here, I recommend staying here if you're in the Antigua area!…
Place is a landmark having been built in the 1600's. It is located on the main, pedestrians only street within easy walking distance to Central Park, all kinds of shops, local food markets and landmarks. It's also adjacent to the Macondo Bar (I also reviewed and please say hi to Jenifer) a great place to grab a drink. The limited number of rooms are on one floor situated off a central, internal Court yard. A shout out to Carolina for keeping my room neat, taking care of my laundry, and just being sweet and friendly despite the language difference. I would definitely go back.
This hotel is located right under the famous Arch in Antigua. It’s a beautiful property! I recommended this to a group of friends and they all loved how clean, beautiful and spacious the rooms are. The staff is always helpful and dedicated. This hotel has a restaurant with many different options for all kind of diet restrictions. It’s only steps away from the main plaza.
This hotel is in an old convent perfectly located in the city centre. Rooms are spacious and clean and the hotel staff, particularly the young ladies in reception were very friendly and helpful. WIFI is great. I recommend this hotel for those seeking a hotel with character, convenience and comfortable living.
We loved this hotel. It's historic and beautiful. The restaurant is good with great staff and good service. The rooms are nice and well decorated. The only downside is the band that plays from 7 to 10 pm on Friday nights... it's pretty loud. Otherwise, I have no complaints and really liked this place!
So loud! Starting at 6:30 the guys start setting up breakfast ; you can hear every fork placed, every chair scraped on the floor. The live music in the courtyard did shut off immediately at 10pm all nights. No window except to the noisy courtyard only place I’ve stayed in Honduras or Guatemala that did not include breakfast. Yes it’s near the arch but many hotels are. I would not stay here again. We are back for 2 more nights at New Year’s Eve, but we will find something else. This was awful.
It sounded very cool to stay in a 400 year old former convent, with a beautiful courtyard, with one of Antigua's main attractions literally right out the door. And that was indeed very cool. However, the rooms have no sound insulation. All the rooms face one of two courtyards. The back courtyard is quieter, so might have been less problematic. But when activities in the courtyard can go past midnight, and they started setting up for breakfast at 6am, we were not able to get much sleep. Add to that the bells from the nearby cathedral which inexplicably ring all night long, on no set interval (but on avg, every 10 minutes), and this was one of the noisier hotels I have ever experienced. When I brought these concerns to their attention, they said there was nothing they could do about it. We also accidentally booked an additional night, but did not realize this until a week past their 2 week cancelation policy. We immediately called the hotel. They said they would email us back after they spoke to the manager to see if we could still cancel. This went back & forth until check-out, when the manager agreed to give a refund if they were able to rent out the room - which, with only a couple hours to do so, they were not. Had they figured this out when we called, they could probably have rented it.…
Stayed here for 4 nights attending a conference. I slept well, i showered well and the breakfasts were marvellous! Good service. A little bit of complaining about weak coffee the first morning and wow! Next day coffee was perfect! Such a nice atmosphere. I know some colleagues were complaining about the bell ringing in the middle of the night from The Arch - but luckily my room was a bit far from that noice.
This is a very centrally located hotel and has some nice touches, however there is a price to pay, more later. We were a party of five and booked two rooms for the weekend. Our rooms were not in the main hotel area but in a back courtyard area facing a landscaped walkway. I thought we might be in the quiet part but not so. While the rooms are nice and spacious with all what you need the front is a wall of glass, it does let the light in and there are floor to ceiling blackouts curtains. There is a small kitchenette in the back with some equipment. The fridge came in handy. The bathroom offered a few amenities but the shower itself was lacking as there was no water pressure and one morning there was no hot water. There is a restaurant which offered 2 for 1 breakfast which was adequate. The coffee was good and you get free refills. The service was good and they tolerated our attempts at Spanish. The downside for me was the very hard bed and lumpy pillows. Each night we had to put up with the incessant thumping of the nearby nightclub. Sunday morning we were awakened by band practice and that evening someone was drilling in the back. The next morning it started bright and early at 8 am. Just unfortunate.…
