I spent 3 nights at the historic Hacienda de Cayara , beautifully restored colonial building . Arturo not only gave me a wonderful tour of the museum but I was the first guest to visit an ancient village built under a cliff of sand stone that had been weathered into extraordinary shapes . On the 6 kilometer road to get there we visited the remains of Inca dwellings , with spectacular views through distant hills all the way to Potosi , Inca terraces still visible on the hill sides . Local Indian farmers herding their Lamas added to the enchanting landscape . I would recommend that you hike the distance if you have the energy . On my lone wandering in the hills I found two new birds to add to my list . Thank you to Alturo & your friendly staff .

This place is great, and I can't recommend it enough. Extremely comfortable and clean, plus the experience of staying in such a beautiful and well-restored building from the 1500's was incredible. The staff was always very willing to do whatever they could to make our time there as nice as possible. It was perfect. Go!!

Our two nights at the Hacienda were not enough. A marvellous and valuable historical collection of books, paintings, furniture et al and our very generous host Alturo showed us it all over a two hour tour. The property is fabulous and the local hiking in the hills is wonderful. Friendly villagers and well marked paths. We didn't even bother going into Potosi, there was so much to do at the Hacienda. The people are the best part - wonderful hospitality and generosity of spirit. We are so impressed with it all. We will be back!! Thank you to you all.

Okay, this is a bit on the long side but you don't often come across places like Cayara, so it's worth a few extra words. I've not talked about the history, others have talked about that at length, and it is no exageration. We arrived in Potosi late afternoon having travelled by bus from Uyuni earlier that day. With limited spanish language skills and not knowing the way to Cayara we made a phone call to Arturo asking for assistance. Within 10 minutes a taxi was at our service taking us on the scenic drive to Cayara (yes, they all drive too fast, but that is Bolivia, or rather South America). Once we turned off the main highway we travelled a winding cobblestone road through a lush green valley of well cared farmland. We lost track of everything but the scenery. Perhaps it was

This 16th century hacienda is a wonderful and unusual hotel that houses a museum which tells the story of Bolivia through the eyes and artefacts of its inhabitants through the ages. A stay at the hotel includes a tour of the museum guided by either Arturo or Edgar - both descendants of M. Soux who bought the Hacienda in 1905. About half a mile behind the house is a waterfall which provides fabulous fresh water to the hotel. The hotel's owners also own the dairy up the road which supplies fresh cheese, milk and yoghurt to the hotel. If you ask nicely they'll give you delicious natural yoghurts. Oh and the dairy sells milk ices for a couple of pence. Even Potosinos are amazed to find such a lush valley just 30 minutes from Potosi (and a welcome 800 m below).

This is an awesome place. The hotel is set in a 16th century hacienda. In the main house the dedicated owners, from the family who have owned the hacienda for 3 generations, have restored many of the rooms and it contains an amazing library and artefacts from the history of Bolivia. General Sucre, namesake of Sucre, had a room here and it even contains his bed and mattress. The rooms are beautifully decorated and comfortable and the surroundings are incredible. There is a functioning hydroelectric power station up the road which was built by the first generation of the family in the house. The food is great and the chef Nancy cooks up tasty meals which are good value. Best of all is the enthusiasm of Arturo, one of the owners, the tour of the house and the fact that you can

If you like history you will love this place. It is like staying in a museum without the armed guards. Walk through parlors and museums that will blow your mind. Don't miss the stonewalled orchards, and gardens, dairy farm with daily production of cheese and yogurt. (Ask Arturo to take you trout fishing. Relax and read in the muraled ceiling salon in front of the nightly fire. Also ask for a trip to the hotsprings located on the top of the world with a dynamic view. (Note: the food could use some attention since no other restaurants within range.Be sure and budget 10$US a meal each.)

We are only just starting to digest the impressions we received on our recent visit to Cayara. We were amazed by the location in the lush green valley after the starkness of Potosi, and the beautiful colonial architecture as we walked through the hacienda. It was the attention to detail, however, in the displays of books, furniture and artifacts, that impressed us most. This is due to the dedication and passion demonstrated by Arturo as custodian of his family's home. The time he spent showing us around was an act of true generosity and much appreciated. The rooms are very comfortable and beautifully furnished. To be able to stay in such a historic setting is a real treat. We know for sure that any future guests choosing Cayara will receive an experience second to none.

Enough has been written about the beautiful ancient buildings and the incredible collection of armory, furniture, books and artifacts. What really made the stay at Cayara memorable was the people and how you are welcomed and treated as an old friend. Everything from sitting around the fireplace at night and listening to the encyclopedic memory of Arturo's uncle, the shy but ever friendly and eager to please Nancy, Chris who is every bit as concerned for the well being as his father and Arturo himself, who is making arrangements and contacting people to make his guests wishes possible, even if it is a holiday. The valley where this property is found is tranquil, with a river that allows all of the beautiful agricultural fields to flourish. When you need an escape from your "one

Whether you´re bushed from a stint in Salar, or just seek a hideaway to finish drafting a report, in a wonderful farming valley, this is the place for you. Home cooked food, scenic hikes, hot springs, horseback riding, and dairy cows are some of the pleasures of this small country inn, about a 35 minute drive north of Potosi. History permeates the entire hacienda, and if you are lucky, the owner Arturo Leyton might find some time to introduce you to some tomes in the library which has some centuries old volumes that invite reflection and inquiry. The Cayara valley has a landscape not unlike parts of Arizona, but with the age old farming terraces visible high up on many of the slopes, some built in Incan times. Great place for small meetings and conferences. Photographers will
