I stayed in the Royal in August 2011 during a short business trip, coming from La Paz.
At least it´s warmer here than in La Paz was my initial thought, having arrived in Santa Cruz...

From outside, the hotel looked "OK" - but during my stay, I´ve found a number of aspects
which made me giving an "average" to this place.

The corridors were dark and extremely hot.
The room was large and old-fashioned. Nothing exciting.
Internet: It took me a lot of time and effort talking to the management to to finally get the wifi to work.
The hotel pool: a kind of joke. Looking good - but due to the leaves, it wasn´t any inviting to jump in.
Breakfast: very limited variety of foods.

The positive aspects had less to do with the hotel - but with the location and my preferences for working out while travalling:

In just a one minute walk, you´ll find a gym which is GREAT - not only for bolivian standards:
It´s a very busy place where you find lots of exercise machines for a full training!

In 5 minutes (walking) you´ll find a large supermarket; and in 10 minutes walking, you´ll find a
place with good food in the Lomitos de Hamaca restaurant.

If I stay here again?

Maybe - but only because of the gym; supermarket; restaurant which are in close distance.

The hotel staff is very friendly, like most of the locals in Santa Cruz. They do not have power adapters you can borrow for your electronics, and the WiFi is spotty at best. It works decent about 3 am when you don't have to share it, otherwise it's slower than dialup used to be. The 3rd floor was not good, that's where i stayed my initial few days. It is outdated by about 10-15 years, but they are doing renovations right now. Get a room on the 4th floor, those rooms are pretty nice. There are a couple of decent English speakers on staff, and they will do what they can to help you. It cost me $45 a night, but you get a semi-decent breakfast for free. They have 2-3 different fresh fruits, some questionable scrambled eggs, and then some grains. You can easily fill up for the day. Izuto taxi company is affiliated with this hotel. There's not much to see or do in this immediate area and you will have to get a taxi to safely explore. It's about 50 Bs (bolivianos) to rent a taxi for one hour, quite reasonable. The staff will gladly call a taxi for you, but I suggest Roberto Escalante, have them call his direct number -60006191. He speaks English, and if you want to find anything, he knows where it is. He was my taxi driver, tour guide and we became friends at the end of my month long stay in Bolivia. You can call him any time of the day, and he will show up on time-this is not the norm for most taxi drivers in that area in my experience. You can also email me if you have any questions, I'm not getting paid for any of this. One thing you will notice about Bolivians, they work all day and into the night, literally and Roberto earned every dollar he made from me. He will make your stay in Bolivia easier, and has no problem haggling for you with locals when you want to buy something-he also speaks good English, not common in that city. There is a grocery store down the street called Slan, easy walking distance of the hotel, but they over inflate their prices especially for the gringos. I suggest telling Roberto you want to go where the locals shop...you will be impressed. There is also 2 banks within walking distance of the Royal, and for most things in Bolivia you will need to exchange your currency to Bolivianos, especially with local vendors.

I have stayed at this hotel for about ten years since it first opened. I have seen it go down completely. For about the first 5 years it opened it was great, now due to almost no maintanence it has gotten bad. Also, there are Robbers with Fake ID's driving around the area saying they are COP's and robbing guests in the area. Last time I stayed December 2012 a guest from Peru had been robbed the week before. Hotel Administration does NOT Warn guests about this problem even though they are aware of it.

I stayed in this hotel for a week on business. Three nights, including the one I arrived, there were no towels in my room (the first time I was wondering whether - could it be? - you don't get towels in Bolivian hotels?).

Breakfasts were a disappointment. Sugary coloured drinks that pretended to be juice, sugary white-dough pastries, some scrambled eggs sitting in an unheated metal dish, and only Corn Flakes for cereal. The fruit selection usually limited to one item: brownish pineapple slices.

I ate several nights in the hotel because I was too tired to go out. The last night, they didn't have my first two choices for a main dish. And no desserts, because they didn't make any that day.

The wireless internet was pitifully slow (typically 5-10 Mbps) and the signal barely reached the length of my room.

The shower was so unpredictable they've put instructions on the wall to tell you how to get the right temperature. It would jump from literally scalding, to cool, and back again, within seconds. Not once did I have a shower with a consistent temperature.

On the plus side, the Carrier air-conditioner in my room was quiet and effective.

Calling this hotel 4-star is a joke.

Nice and cozy hotel. Friendly and helpful service. It's conveniently located within the business district, restaurants, and night life. Great for family visits ,too. Good place for your money in a centrally located area.

close to center/airport. clean rooms, staff very friendly. service is very slow- feels like everything is done in slow motion from check in to check out to restaurant services. breakfast is good. no gym /exercise facilities. Pool is nice and clean. can be a little noisy if room is facing the street. Wifi not great if your room is far away - opposite from the lobby. need to go down the lobby to get good wifi.

Spent a night at Royal Lodge before catching return flight to US. Hotel was recommended by several long term Bolivian residents with American roots. The hotel was a good pick. It is relatively close to the airport--about a twenty minutes taxi ride in afternoon traffic. There are few options closer. Taxi ride is set 60 Bol. Hotel is in a nice and affluent quadrent of town. I took an extended walk down San Martin toward town center and passed many shops and restaurants. I ate dinner at the hotel which was inexpensive and very good. Service is a little spotty since the restaurant seems to serve only hotel guests--at least when I was there only one other man was there and he was a guest. The restaurant staff was doubling as front desk staff. Room was in good condition and well outfitted. One nice feature was a beautiful quilt on the bed. Also, my room and I think most have small outdoor patios that are nice for an afternoon break. Morning wake up call was exact. All things considered this hotel is a comfortable good value. I'll stay there next time.
