I stayed 2 nights at this hotel when on business in Shantou. I was in a Deluxe Double Room on a reasonably high floor which had a view. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom clean and functional. The AC in the room worked well which was good as it was hot in Shantou in August. If you don't mind a walk you can walk the 3.5Km from the Hotel to the old Stone Fort, which I did twice. It is perfectly safe walking around and a great way to mix with the locals. I did not eat the hotel breakfast so I can't comment but I did take a look and it looked 'okay' but nothing special. I paid Ā£95 per night for the room, including taxes, via Expedia.

Well I just returned from China again and spent another 3 nights at the Meritus Shantou. And once again the staff went out of there way to make my stay the best. I had a room on the club level and all I can say is WOW!! great room with a huge bathroom and a walk in shower. There is a huge Wal-Mart Supercenter right down the street to buy Beer and sodas at and you must have one of the guys arrange a nice tour of the city for you on the back of these Bike type Ricksha. I went for 2 hours and this guy peddled and peddled all for about 12 bucks with a nice tip!!! Feel free to E-mail me should you want any general info on this great city.

Best Regards,

Mark Cell

Don't stay here unless you have a strong stomach and strong arms. Our family were at the buffet breakfast when my daughter realized that the bread she is eating has mold on it. When asked the waitress to verify, she simply took the plate away and never came back with any explanations. When leaving the restaurant, she said the chef has not come back to her. That was a good 30 minutes after she took the evidence away.

Later that night, we found the BBC TV not properly tuned in one room but perfect in another. The woman who came did not know how to solve it, and suggested I move the working TV set to my room and the not so good TV to our other room.

I have stayed at this hotel when it was under the previous management and owner. It has gone down in standard at a rapid rate. Mark my word, it will go down the ranking, fast.

We moved to this hotel after a night stay at a local hotel which we dont really like. This hotel is clean, has a gym and indoor pool. Theres happy hour deal from 4pm to 7pm, on beer at ground level lounge which is very cosy and good for business meet up. The massage parlour is reasonable priced and you are able to select to have your massage there or in your room at the same price. 90 mins is about USD 40. Theres a ktv club at level 7, and a few restaurants in the hotel. As for location wise, it is quite centralise. Exit hotel on your right, theres a hair salon. Mcdonald and kfc are sighted after u passed 3 traffic lights, which is near jinsha pedestrian shopping street.
Frontdesk staff able to communicate in English and are very helpful and accomodating.

The room is clean and equipped but the bed is hard! I could hear a noise of springs when I lied down!

The service was ok BUT you must confirm your requests twice! I requested an extra bed to be prepared on the next day but they didn't do. I requested a bell boy service at 5.00 am in the next day morning but the night shift wasn't informed. At least all the staffs are very polite. It was just annoying that they keep forgetting.

It claims as a five-star hotel but I would say they charge you a five-star hotel price but the service and room are four stars.

A tip for traveller booking online, if u don't book a room with breakfast, dim sum in a chinese restaurant on second floor is good and the price is inexpensive.

This hotel is perfect for business - went there with my partner and stayed in the 8th floor room.

Rooms are great - front desk people are quite rude, just dont understand english and quite unfriendly and unhelpful.

Just ok for business stay.Rooms have a great view.

Hotel room is clean and spacious especially the bathroom, if people looking for large bathroom can try this hotel, breakfast is acceptable. The reception staff, Mr Calvin Zhang and others are very helpful and attentive, make us feel happy to stay there for 5 nights and arrange for us to visit the places we wanted to go. we will choose this hotel again if we intend to visit Shantou again.

Had a stay of 2 weeks. Overall was satisfactory.
The rooms were newly renovated, neat and well equipped (they provided washing powder as amenities).
Each room got its own router for wired and wifi internet connection.
The staff were helpful and fast responding.
But the other facilities, such as restaurant and sports centre should be avoided.
The Chinese restaurant was very much overpriced. While the food served was in poor quality.
The Cafe serving breakfast buffet offered unfresh food was and never got refilled.
Be aware of the gym and pool. It was opened for locals to subscribe for their membership. The pool was filled with naughty kids running with their water guns. The gym had no air-con and even hotter than the sauna bath, with locals wearing swimming trunks working out, always crowded.
Indeed if all you need is to sleep and work in your room, this hotel is a very good choice.
