Le Colonial, by the Chinese fishing nets of Fort Cochin, is probably Asia's oldest colonial house, dating back to 1506. Located in the very heart of Fort Cochin, right next to Saint Francis Church, this legendary house is said to have housed the Saint as also Vasco de Gama. After 150 years as the Portuguese Governor's residence, it was one of the very few houses not to have been destroyed when the Dutch took Fort Cochin. It then housed the Dutch Governors for a century and a half, until Jan van Spall sold it to the British in 1795. In turn, they passed it on to the J. Thomas, the renowned tea trader. These five captive centuries of history have been lovingly restored and the hotel is a true living museum. Treasures of art from the colonial past have revived that era, turning Le Colonial into a "Club" and meeting point for the discerning travellers. Le Colonial, in 2016, was proud to host the second series of BBC's Real Marigold Hotel and its cast!

Magnificent renewed colonial Portuguese house transformed into a charming hotel with 7 rooms. Located at the heart of the historical part of Cochin. Decoration of colonial style is of very high quality. Staff is very nice and attentive. Room rates include lunch or dining and cooking is of good quality, mostly of Kerala cooking style.

Built in 1506, this is the second oldest colonial bungalow in asia. One of the earlier residents was Vasco de Gama who died here and was buried in St Francis Church before his remains were removed to Portugal. Other notable resident was a French Naval officer Mahe de la Bourdonnaise who went north and coquered Malabar. The bungalow was then used by Dutch officers before it fell to British. 1605 AD was possessed by the Dutch and remined in Dutch possession till 17th Century when it fell in British hand and remained so till 1947. Many a Dutch, French and British colonial army and navy officers have stayed at this property

Present owners from France bought the property c. turn of the millennium and converted it in to a seven-bedroom resort with a swimming pool. Each room is named after colonial officers who had made significant contribution in colonial times.

Hotel Marigold series two was filmed in this hotel.

Dining area overlooks the pool and overlooks the garden. This is
tastefully decorated with outside lights and is suitable for romantic evening dinning. Cuisine is mixed Indian and European cuisine and all including bread and ice-cream if requested are prepared daily in house.

Rooms are attended to twice a day, in the morning for main cleaning and in the evening for turning down the bed. Bathrooms are very spacious and each room has a shower and a bath.

Staff are very friendly, attentive and meals are excellent and cooked to western taste.

This place is a must visit.

We had the pleasure of staying in Le Colonial at the start of our late December visit to Kerala, and we were so glad we had chosen this wonderful, restful place. Although right in the centre of the action at Fort Cochin, the walled hotel is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the main road and it attendant wonderful colourful atmosphere that is India at its best.
Our spacious, immaculately clean room with mahogany furniture reflecting the period, was filled with everything we needed except a kettle, but the hotel gave us tea and coffee - beautifully served - whenever we needed it. Although we didn't have dinner, the breakfast was of a very high standard, provided everything we requested - including marmalade! (but what would one expect?) The staff were very friendly, polite and exceptionally helpful from the manager downwards. He obviously leads from the top and sets a wonderful example to the staff.
Le Colonial will be my first choice of venue when next we are in Fort Cochin - but we'll make it longer next time!

This is our second visit to Cochin and what a little gem this hotel is, it’s like home from home, the furnishings and decor are amazing, it’s very well situated and the staff can’t do enough to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
And yes it is where they filmed the second series on the BBC.
Fabulous.

Really was looking forward to staying here - had booked multiple rooms and prepaid 180,000 inr. But then I emailed the hotel a few days before the stay (this was for Christmas 2016) and they said they didn't have my booking. They said the price was now ~2x what we had already paid and had confirmations for. So my guess is that the hotel saw they were able to get more due to being pretty full and canceled our stay as it was at the cheapest rate.

The hotel says that they never received our booking. This is completely untrue. As soon as we booked, the rooms were taken out of the hotel's inventory, indicating that the reservation did go through. Each room here is individually named and individually booked, so it was easy to tell that the rooms we were booking were reserved for us, at least at the time of the booking.

The hotel customer service was completely unhelpful and now borderline threatening with TripAdvisor reviews. I would have loved to have stayed here at the time - that's why we spent 180,000 inr after all (which was refunded) - but now there's no way I'm going to stay here given how they treated me and my family. It was simple to resolve our issue (honor the booking) but the hotel chose to fight.

I know what the hotel will respond with - and it's telling of their confrontational attitude. They will not apologize for anything and will attempt to shift responsibility to anyone but themselves. Why not just try to make things right at the time, is that too hard? Apparently it is for this hotel and their management company.

There are lots of other nice places in the area that have very good customer service that I will stay at and recommend instead.

I booked here for my husband and I after returning from a stressful summer holiday. We managed to go for a week during Eid, and I am so happy we made this decision. From the moment we stepped through the gates, we were welcomed by Smita and the staff. They were all friendly and a nice refreshing drink was offered. As the occupancy was quiet at the time, they surprisingly upgraded our room, and it was amazing!
The whole house was very traditional, well worth the name Le Colonial. In fact my husband half expected a Michael Caine, think Zulu, to walk down the stairs! The decor and furniture is in keeping with this feel which adds to the warmth.

The food was exceptional, nothing was too much for the kitchen staff and chef. I felt like a princess being looked after in this little hidden away gem. The location is perfect for walking around and seeing the fishing nets, also the local markets. The shops are enchanting and you are of course harassed by the many rickshaw drivers once you step out of the gates, but this is standard across visiting India, and other Asian countries. It does add to the experience, and they do leave you alone after so many "no's". There are also lots of art gallery's nearby which are interesting to look at.

We used the pool facilities and relaxed on the veranda, where the staff were always on hand to offer us refreshments etc.. We were able to read our books in peace and quiet or just chat to other guests, which was an inviting experience in itself.

The room price includes breakfast and or lunch/dinner, which is extremely reasonable. and the breakfast was so scrumptious, always starting with a plate of fruit and then anything thereafter.

We stayed for 5 days with an overnight stay on a boat trip down the backwaters, and we both cannot wait to go back and stay again. It was truly the relaxing, friendly environment we needed given the hectic summer schedule we had. Not only did the hotel live up to the recommendation but the staff were every bit caring and attentive to our needs.
Thank you Le Colonial!

Visited recently in a group of 5 families. We had the whole place to us and really enjoyed every part of it. The rooms, the furniture, the prints on the walls, the old books, the food, the staff, all wonderfully managed by Smita who made us feel very much at home. Next door the church where Da Gama was first buried, opposite the Cochin club, super location. Can't think of anything that could have been better.

What a wonderful place... Wonderful ambience, wonderful service and absolutely beautiful rooms. We actually stayed in the Viceroy room which was absolutely stunning. Air conditioning was wonderful to walk in to.. Smita was a delight and made sure we were looked after, food was excellent and what you requested... I had home made cottage pie on two different occasions it was delicious. Within easy reach of all the sites of Fort Kochi. I cannot speak to highly of this hotel and must not forget Sumesh who along with Smita seemed to be there whenever you wanted anything or had a question. Having now seen it on The Real Marigold Hotel I can only say it is even better in real life.

Since we are Portuguese, decided to visit Kochi because of the first Europeans who arrived at India - namely Vasco da Gama, who died in this city; supposedly has lived in the house now occupied by Le Colonial Hotel - a beautiful, well preserved, extremely comfortable human scale hotel. Couldn't have chosen better!
Extremely kind, attentive and professional staff.
We had a light meal on arrival which was really tasteful.
Hotel is at close, walking distance, to all relevant visiting sites in Fort Kochi, including shops and restaurants (generally surprisingly good).
Had the chance to stay in Fort Kochi during the Art Biennale - again a fantastic surprise!

Answer from Isabelle P

Hi Mike, Bestt time would be September to February if you want to avoid too much rain and heat with the safest window being between mid-October to mid-February. In past years however, the weather seems to be less predictable, so no guarantees. You could have dry weather during monsoon... Kind regards, Isabelle
