Le Colonial, by the Chinese fishing nets of Fort Cochin, is probably Asia's oldest colonial house, dating back to 1506. Located in the very heart of Fort Cochin, right next to Saint Francis Church, this legendary house is said to have housed the Saint as also Vasco de Gama. After 150 years as the Portuguese Governor's residence, it was one of the very few houses not to have been destroyed when the Dutch took Fort Cochin. It then housed the Dutch Governors for a century and a half, until Jan van Spall sold it to the British in 1795. In turn, they passed it on to the J. Thomas, the renowned tea trader. These five captive centuries of history have been lovingly restored and the hotel is a true living museum. Treasures of art from the colonial past have revived that era, turning Le Colonial into a "Club" and meeting point for the discerning travellers. Le Colonial, in 2016, was proud to host the second series of BBC's Real Marigold Hotel and its cast!

We stayed here for five nights. The food is worthy of a top restaurant and the talented chef will adapt to your taste. The rooms are beautiful, clean, spacious and comfortable. We stayed in the Viceroy suite which is stunning. Smita, the manager is very helpful and friendly. This historic hotel is an oasis with first class and service at reasonable prices. Only a few rooms (7 or 8?), each one different. After checking out nearby sights it was lovely to return and relax poolside. Heaven.

Le Colonial was our favourite place to stay in Kerala. The resorts in the mountains were lovely, but this place was like a home. The property is very nicely landscaped and includes a lovely little swimming pool that leads to an open-air dining area. At the time of our stay, we were the only customers there, so we received personal care and service, which was just wonderful. Upon our arrival, our gracious host (my apologies, I have forgotten her name) greeted us with some nice cold homemade lemonade and we relaxed in the front parlour area, which was very nicely decorated with furniture and artifacts from the British era. The whole building contains paintings from the colonial eras, the woodwork is beautifully maintained, and our room was extremely spacious, clean and
