Le Colonial, by the Chinese fishing nets of Fort Cochin, is probably Asia's oldest colonial house, dating back to 1506. Located in the very heart of Fort Cochin, right next to Saint Francis Church, this legendary house is said to have housed the Saint as also Vasco de Gama. After 150 years as the Portuguese Governor's residence, it was one of the very few houses not to have been destroyed when the Dutch took Fort Cochin. It then housed the Dutch Governors for a century and a half, until Jan van Spall sold it to the British in 1795. In turn, they passed it on to the J. Thomas, the renowned tea trader. These five captive centuries of history have been lovingly restored and the hotel is a true living museum. Treasures of art from the colonial past have revived that era, turning Le Colonial into a "Club" and meeting point for the discerning travellers. Le Colonial, in 2016, was proud to host the second series of BBC's Real Marigold Hotel and its cast!

What a location. What a building. What presentation. What food and service. This place rocks. My wife, daughter and I stayed (just) one night in July, which is monsoon/off season. We were the only guests and were treated like royalty. We had food prepared for us to order. We had the attention of our hosts when ever we needed it and we had the place to ourselves! The rooms were exquisitely presented and spotlessly clean. The hotel is located in the middle of historical Fort Kochi, which makes it ideal for those who want to venture out by foot and easy for those who need to go further afield by auto-rickshaw or car.

The building is large enough to support a number of guests at any one time, yet intimate enough to allow you to forget that it is a 'hotel'. I can’t fault the hotel and its staff. If you want to stay somewhere very special, and feel special, I’d highly recommend this hotel. You’ll love it!

I booked for two nights at Le Colonial,it was such a great place I booked two more nights to end my holiday in style and comfort .The rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated, understated but chic. There is a nice pool in the grounds perfect for cooling off .Le Colonial is a small Hotel which has a true 'boutique' feel and it is like home from home. The staff are extremely attentive but also discreet. If you stay, eating there is a must. The chef cooks great food to your liking ,delicious ! Hoping to go back again !

We stayed here for three nights on our arrival in Kochin and couldn't have wished for a better place to stay. The rooms were large and comfortable and furnished in a colonial style, not surprisingly; we also had a verandah overlooking the garden. The staff were courteous and extremely helpful, the food delicious, and as other reviewers have mentioned a lot of things to see and do are a short walk away. We were given good advice from the manager about other places to eat in the evening should you wish but from our experience you would do better to stay in the hotel and enjoy their catering. A very relaxing place to stay.

I travel a lot for work and for fun...so I get to visit a lot of properties. Le Colonial is simply fantastic. Some properties are great...some offer wonderful experiences...Le Colonial affords both. I've never felt quite 'at home' as we did here. We asked for a cooking lesson and spent two hours learning with their kitchen crew. If you're coming to Ft. Cochin, stay here.

We stayed at the hotel after our other plans fell through and we were so lucky to arrive at such a lovely place, great food but above all, such friendly staff. The GM and her staff headed by the efficient Vipin, were great to be around. We were looked after in every way and they all really understood how to make their guests feel at home. The day after we left a tree fell down in their garden which we saw on our return to the city. I hope that they have managed to get back on track for the busy Christmas season. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Oh Le Colonial! Our home from home in lovely Fort Kochi. If you are looking for 5 star glossy hotel luxury then you will be disappointed but if you like to leave your door open and wonder round in your bare feet, or curl up on a sofa in the gorgeous living room, then this is the place...understated colonial style, large beds and bathrooms...but none of that would matter without Smitha and her team. Smitha is a natural host, and we really enjoyed our time spent with her. Her team are absolutely professional while still being friendy and casual, and I haven't even mentioned the food. Each meal (especially breakfast) was a whole host of tasty surprises. But don't tell anyone as this place needs to stay secret so we can always get a reservation.

A luxury to flee from effervescent Indian city life, inside the white walls, surrounded by jungle sounds of tree birds, to relax on a verandah or in the dipping pool. A superb collection of furniture and illustrations to immerse in and experience the people from Kochi's historical past. (Visit the church across the road to see the memorials). The management are very welcoming and allow the visitor to feel at home and enjoy the privacy of a genuine colonial house.
The food is excellent. Breakfast - good coffee, fruit and omelettes - which I think are essential at the start of an Indian day. I personally love their Kerala cuisine and the chef seems more delighted if guests would like the delicious European menu.
I have been lucky enough to stay in three different rooms, all with bathrooms to luxuriate in. Jan van Spall is huge with a lovely verandah and a choice of double beds! They are all conducive to diary writing!
Highly recommended and to return to.

Le Colonial is a charming property, enhanced by tasteful and appropriate interior designing and decor, keeping the original Portugese flavor intact while giving all the comforts of 5 star living. No ugly AC ducts here! The service is exemplary - personalized like a home stay, yet distant enough to make you feel comfortably independent. Food was fantastic, especially the Kerala 'home' cuisine as requested by us. Smita and the team - take a bow!

Of our trip to South India, this was by far the best hotel we stayed in. The director made you feel you were staying a her private home, and you felt home away from home. There is nothing else to add : anyone going to Cochin and not staying there has wasted his trip! This hotel just made me regret that we couldn't stay at another hotel of the same group: L'Orient in Pondichery as it was full.

Hi,what's the best time of year to come when it's not wet or too hot, regards mike
Answer from Isabelle P
Singapore, Singapore43 contributions11 helpful votes
Hi Mike, Bestt time would be September to February if you want to avoid too much rain and heat with the safest window being between mid-October to mid-February. In past years however, the weather seems to be less predictable, so no guarantees. You could have dry weather during monsoon... Kind regards, Isabelle
