The hotel is nicely decorated with colonial vibe. Some people said the hotel is spooky but I didn't feel it at all. The rooms are nicely managed, clean, well-lit, comfy with well equipped amenities. Each room has its own small balcony. I also received personalized messages when I checked in. I can't think of anything else to complain other than... More

This is a small yet beautiful hotel. The room is very comfy and clean, our room is located on the 2nd floor and has a balcony overlooking the beautifully manicured garden located opposite the hotel. The service was excellent, I think there were more staffs than guests during our stay. Breakfast variation and taste are standard. This hotel is recommended... More

We were not sure at first about this hotel. The term "colonial building" somehow connotes spooky and old. But not this one. They had done a great job in refurbishing this building. It still kept its quaint but it's also modern and sleek at the same time.

The hotel itself was very clean and tidy. Roomservice actually cleans the room twice a day if you want them to. This is the first time i experienced this in my life. The food in the restaurant, though somewhat expensive for indonesian restaurants, was very good. The staff was also extremly helpfull in all aspects, they even helped translate and... More

The hotel is really clean and well organised. The staff working there are absolutely amazing, during my stay I ended up going to the hospital (not related to the hotel in any way). We stayed at The Shalimar for three nights. The rooms are very nicely furnished with all the ammneties you need. Great shower and high quality beds. The pool is nicely located and big. Only downside there are no umbrellas. The whole lobby area displays nice asian decoration items. The whole staff is very helpful and friendly. The restaurant is average.

I always love a nostalgic hotel with rich history like Shalimar. You can really feel the Dutch Colonial atmosphere from the entrance, lobby and the restaurant. I love the interior and the beautifully framed old photos hanged on the white walls. The corridors and the rooms are very modern, minimalistic, and clean. Modern and comfortable but lacking the colonial theme... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Originally built by the architect Ir. Muller for the Freemasons, the building was opened for the first time in 1933. After the Freemasons, the building became a "SOCIETEIT" where the Dutch and the Dutch speaking community of Malang come to meet friends and entertain themselves with food, music and dancing. In 1964 the building housed the Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Malang, but was soon outgrown. In 1993 Malang Inn was opened. However, in 1995, a new law came about where establishments were no longer allowed to use foreign names and this is how The Graha Cakra was established. Mid 2014 The Graha Cakra closed its doors to undergo a thorough renovation to become what it is now, a 5 star boutique hotel. It now houses de Hemel restaurant, Zestien terrace & lounge, De Tjakra Hall, Taman Aroem Spa and Soga Boutique. ... more   less
