Tiara Hotel is located in the heart of Medan, less than 10 mins from Polonia Airport and next to the Business District. Sun Plaza Mall is a short walk away although we are happy to arrange transportation should you need it.Our guests are primarily business people, however everyone is welcome and we are popular with international tourists as well. We have a reputation for clean rooms, and friendly staff and as such we have many long staying guests. Several of Indonesia's presidents have stayed with us over the years. All food is Halal and currently we are a smoking hotel, although we have non-smoking floors if you prefer.Recently we celebrated our 30th Birthday, so we are an older hotel. Because of this we are slowly renovating the rooms and amenities, and the work should be complete by 2015. Renovation work is carried out during the daytime and should not affect you.

Detailed Reviews
I have stayed at a number of hotels in Medan in this category and consider this one by far the best. Opt for the business package, it seems to cost much less than the regular room rate and I have yet to find a catch! You get free access to the comfortable Executive lounge for a more relaxing breakfast and early evening tea and snacks. The staff are very friendly, and although you have to be a bit careful as sometimes their understanding of English is not too good, they do try hard to get things right.

The hotel is very clean, rooms are nice and the price is reasonable. I did find the food lacking at the resturant but it wasn' t horrible. Breakfast consisted of lots of fresh fruit so it was worth it. Overall this is a very nice hotel, I will stay there again when I travel back to Medan.

We stayed here for one night. The room was nice, the size of the room was also ok, it was clean. It could be also rated as above average in Medan, but we did not like the food in the restaurant. Would recommend to try to find a restaurant outside. The Tiara hotel is in a nice area of Medan, close to consulates and there is an adjacent conference centre next to the hotel. The airport is max. 10 minutes away by car.
The life music in the bar was great.
Would probably stay here again.

My cousin held his wedding celebration on the Convention Hall in June 2012. The event was supposed to finished at 11 pm, if I'm not mistaken. However, when it was 11 pm and there were still quite guests around, the lights turned off 3 times. Pitch black. 3 times! I'm not sure if the management did this on purpose or there was technical problem, which I am sure there wasn't since big & famous hotel like this have gen-sets. It was quite embarrassing and some of us got on our nerves. Well, they should have charge us for being late in keeping the time but not turning off lights like that, as if were saying that we need to get out. Very unpleasant and not polite at all.

Response from SimonMedan, Finance Director at Tiara Medan Hotel & Convention Center
Responded 5 Oct 2012
Thank you for your feedback we appreciate you taking the time to comment on our convention centre. Since receiving your complaint I have spoken to the Director of Marketing and asked her to find out what happened. It is of course not company policy to switch of the lights during events, and we frequently have events which last into the early morning without incident. The night I believe you are referring to had several power cuts, hence why everything went black. If we had switched the main lights off in the main hall there would still have been ambient lighting from outside the hall. The lighting controls for inside and outside the hall are located separately meaning they cannot be tripped together. Unfortunately power-cuts are common place in Medan, and on this occasion there were several power-cuts back to back, although it is possible one of the cuts was due to us switching back to PLN from our generator. I can assure you that the family members organising the event were made aware of the situation, and according to the staff on duty that night were very understanding about situation. We are however sorry that you felt uncomfortable, and being in pitch blackness can be unpleasant. To prevent future problems we are looking into an emergency lighting system to hopefully prevent this situation occurring in the future. Should you have any further concerns please call or email us. We are an old venue and are looking to upgrade ourselves over the coming year. Thank you again for your time and understanding.

Pick up at the airport was free and went smoothly. Check in was smooth and we rec’d a complimentary drink of tea, coffee, or juice in the bar, breakfast was included. We also could choose between one dinner buffet or laundry service (not sure if this was because we went through an agent to book the hotel). Stayed on the 7th floor and room was spacious, fully stocked mini-bar and complimentary water, tea and coffee and WIFI which worked very well. Towels are a bit thin, no washcloths but plenty of soap, etc. Bed is super comfy with two pillows each. There was lots of storage, a TV, safe, a few hangars, and a balcony. Our room was clean and very quiet. The floors are carpeted. A/C does get chilly but we just turned it off till the room warmed up.
Bar has live music but very smoky. We only went to one dinner buffet, a BBQ outside on the open veranda – they had lots of fans running so it stayed cool, and they had live music. There was an adequate selection of food. Breakfast was okay, there is an egg station. I found the coffee pretty terrible so I stuck with the tea. There is a fitness centre with pool.
The hotel is close to Sun Plaza but use the shuttle. I would not recommend walking around Medan – it’s very dangerous as the sidewalks are not maintained and traffic moves quickly. Not a pedestrian friendly place.

The room is very comfortable, no noise from neighbours. Hotel staff is very friendly indeed and the breakfast was much more than we expected. Location is great, close to an impressive shopping mall.

They have a big workout room with old fitness equipment but complete and they have aero fighter class for free for all hotel guest. Aero fighter class similar like body combat class...a cardio class with martial art choreography. I like it because it's free...in five star hotel sometimes we have to spend extra payment for the class. For breakfast they need more combination and 2 times i asked for half boiled egg and they give me RARE boilled egg.

We stayed here for our fist night in Sumatra, and expected it to be a nice, modern hotel of "western" standards. However we were very disappointed to find the hotel was extremely dated, the room and corridor smelt very musty and damp, giving the whole place the feeling that is was not clean. You could not open a window in the room to allow some fresh air in because the windows do not open (clearly the cause of the issue). The bed sheets were old and stained and clearly should have been replaced years ago. The nail in the coffin was being woken up by some kind of staff training or event going on in the car park that started at day break, waking us up first thing in the morning.
Overall, a very disappointing experience that we would not recommend.

Perfect location. Clean rooms. International TV channels and free WiFi in rooms. Little old and worn down but still decent. Room service is great and cheap. Food is really good compared to Indonesian standards. Breakfast buffet has everything one would expect.

I stayed in room 108 for 2 nights recently. I choose this hotel to rest and relax in after 3 night in Tuk Tuk. Arriving at the hotel after a rough 4-5 hours ride, the clean and comfortable room was a welcoming sight and a great place to wind down. After a hot shower, i fell asleep on the extremely comfortable bed within minutes. I spent most of my time in Medan in my room and was well entertained by the TV that comes with many English channels. I tried the room service twice and was more than satisfied with both the taste and portion. Breakfast was good too and comes with a good selection of local food and toast. An egg station is also avaliable.
Sun Plaza is a mere 5 minutes stroll away. Crossing the road to get there could be quite an experience during peak hour. The hyper-market in Sun Plaza is on the 4th floor.
Checkout was fast and you could get the friendly staff to call a bluebird for you if you need to get to the airport (10 minutes away). Overall, i am glad i choose this hotel and it has definately exceeded my expectations.
