Shirat Hayam, a boutique hotel, is located in front of Lake Kinnert and opposite the breathtaking view of the Golan Heights. This rare building has been totally renovated using basaltic stones with many arched windows typical of the Ottoman style. It was built in 1850 and was enlarged in 1925. The hotel was one of the first hotels in Tiberias and was originally called "Haifa" just like other hotels that were named after cities at that time. In 1946, after the very popular Egyptian singer and actress Umm Kulthum also know as "the Star of the East" stayed at the hotel they changed the hotel's former name to The Star of the East as a token of admiration. After the establishment of the State of Israel, the famous painter, Shimshon Holzman, who was a resident of the hotel, set up a big gallery for visitors. Many artists visited, stayed and painted here. Among them were Nachum Guttman, Reuven Rubin and many more including Holzman. One of the most well known paintings of the hotel was created by Nachum Guttman and is called "The Promenade of Tiberias". The hotel since then has been refurbished keeping the uniqueness of its rooms, suites and balconies, enabling the guests to enjoy the feeling of history in every corner at Shirat Hayam boutique hotel. The hotel has kept its characteristic beauty, creating harmonious combination between ancient and modern, giving a feeling of tranquility at its best. Located in front of the Sea of Galilee, the historic building style with the decorative tiles enforces that feeling. The hotel is situated on the Igal Alon Promenade of Tiberias right in the heart of the open-air museum for sculptures where works of art from the best artists are displayed, Illana Gur's for example. It is becoming a center of art. What is there in the hotel? There are 11 magnificently decorated suites with a view of the Sea of Galilee. The Presidential suite, Balconies and De Lux suites were especially designed and furnished to emphasize the uniqueness of the place and yet are furnished with all modern connivances. All the rooms are equipped with LCD screens and Cable TV. Each of the Presidential Suites and the Balconies Suites has a private balcony facing the lake where the changing colors of the scenery can be seen according to the time of day and season. Most rooms contain Jacuzzi. The Holzman Balcony is located on the rooftop of the hotel and is suitable for sunbathing or relaxation. Gatherings of guests, lectures and professional meetings can be organized with advance notice (up to 80 people). Private dinners or other intimate occasions can be held there, too. The hotel offers a dairy breakfast to both guests and visitors outside the hotel. It also offers a spa for treatment and relaxation. Special spa-deals including a day-room are available. The guests are welcome to relax, enjoy their stay and then leave with a smile and a desire to return.

Looking at the pictures again, it appears that 10 years ago the owners spent money on nice photography and writing. But that was 10 years ago... I like hotels that aren't chain-standard and a little different, and I know that older hotels have some issues. But there's a fine line between rustic charm and shabby. Unfortunately, this hotel falls on the wrong side of that line. The Good: The balcony room probably has the best view of the Sea of Galilee than any hotel in Tiberias. It's spectacular. Location is right on the boardwalk, close to some decent restaurants. Amir, the night clerk, is very nice and was very helpful. Breakfast was more than I expected. Coffee was decent. We were served two omelets, fresh bread and pastries, two kinds of salad, and a variety of little cheese/yogurt/salad in little condiment containers. Orange juice was from a very bad concentrate, which should be criminal in Israel... The Bad: The room was large but had almost no storage except for a small armoire. The sitting area had a couch with broken down cushions. There was a huge jacuzzi in the sitting area, but the actual bathroom and shower were tiny and dingy, with corroded fixtures that didn't work well. I think it was clean, but the corrosion and rust made everything in the bathroom look gross. I couldn't shower while I was there. For once I was happy with the dim lighting in a bathroom. The towels were thin and rough. The bed was hard and the duvet was very thin. The only parking is in a little shopping center nearby. Waze originally took us down a dead-end street near the hotel, but there was no access from there, and we had to back up in reverse through a curving alley to get out of there. So if you are using navigation to get there, avoid that last dead-end street and just park in the adjacent shopping center. Then we had to take our bags from the shopping center. You will need to buy a day parking pass from the hotel desk if you will be parked there at all during the day (enforcement starts at 8am). The area itself is very noisy and the rooms have no sound proofing. We could hear the cats under our bedroom window. The street cleaner that comes in the morning is very loud. We were lucky that it's still off season, so it was quiet at night. There was working going on in the hallways while we were there. Besides having to tiptoe down the stairs, around hammers and axes, and plaster, the workers were smoking, and we had to walk through that every time - and we are both allergic. The Ugly: The worst part was the leaky ceiling, and if you go through the reviews, you will see this has been a recurring problem. It was raining when we arrived, and we soon noticed puddles of water in the sitting area. We put down towels and closed up our luggage. We were lucky the first night - the room next to us had a worse leak and it was over their bed. The ceiling leaked even more the second night, and we didn't realize it had expanded. My husband had left his luggage open, thinking it was in a safe location. But in the morning, all the clothes he'd planned to wear were soaked. We told the women at the desk about it, and they couldn't care less. They were not apologetic in any way. The day before, the same women were bickering between them, complaining about the owner/manager who apparently had made some staff cuts, and they were unhappy about serving guests, saying to each other that they weren't hired to be waitresses. This was in the reception and dining area, and they either didn't know or didn't care that I could understand every word. We will not be back and we do not recommend this hotel. With all of the hotels we stayed at on our 2 week trip, this is the only booking I regret.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It was small and quaint, with attentive staff, a jacuzzi in the room, and a beautiful balcony overlooking the Kineret. The breakfast was ok, nothing special. A bit disappointing - hotel breakfasts in Israel are usually amazing. Overall, excellent but a bit pricey.

The hotel is perfectly located in front of the lake. The room was simple but clean. If you do not book a room with a balcony you may enjoy a nice terrace with view on the lake. Recommended for a short stay. Do not forget that in Israel the lodging is costly. This hotel is not an exception.

My wife and I spent two nights at Shirat Hayam as part of a private tour of the northern district. We were is a first floor suite, which had a separate sitting room with a large jacuzzi tub and a private balcony facing the Sea. The hotel is in an old building, and the stone walls inside and out were nice. Our room and the common areas (lobby, patio) were clean and comfortable. The bathroom was quite small and the bedroom barely fit the large bed, but the separate sitting area made up for the smallish bathroom/bedroom. We had breakfast at the hotel both mornings - the one disappointing aspect of our stay. On the first day the eggs were cold and on the second day, as it was Sabbath, the choices were more limited. Bypassing the cold eggs, there was ample quantity, but it was pricy for what we received. The location is fantastic - on the boardwalk that runs along the shore. I understand that noise is an issue for some travelers but it did not bother us.

Stayed there for a night with my wife, very cozy room, comfy bed, quite. We had a suite with a view to the Sea of Galilee (Kineret) - amazing view, amazing sunrise! Very authentic and well kept, very small (11 rooms/suites) which made it perfect for a romantic gateway! We got a pretty large breakfast, with plenty of choice. The stuff we’re very polite and very nice. The parking lot is walking distance and it is city-owned, thus payable, yet not a problem. Not suited for children (to my opinion) nor to people with difficulties with stairs (no lift) Other than that great location!

Take an upper room to avoid nois as the lobby id very noisy, but there is no elevator. The room I stayed at was very very dirty. no value for the high cost. There is no flexibility in breakfast time starts late at 7:30 and there is no parking which is very problematic.

The hotel is in the style of Scottish castles. Very neat and clean. Rooms are a bit dark, but this adds to the style, and panoramic windows are a nice source of light. Personnel are students - really friendly with good English. Breakfast was splendid.

The place is dirty, 'with WALL PEELING IN THE ROOM! Much smaller than advertised, missing items in the room compared to the advertised pictures (no jacuzzi, not even one chair, no shelf or closet, no soap, and missing toilet paper). The worst thing is that the owner is rude, doesn't give any service, doesn't answer the phone, and when he is present, he doesn't speak with the client, claims that he doesn't know English, even when we have someone to speak Hebrew, he answered very rudely. Not recommended at all!!!

Yes, the location is great, but extremely noisy and you must lug your luggage a long way to get there. Yes, the rooms are historic and made of basalt, but the WiFi doesn’t penetrate, so you’ll need to go to the lobby for videos or Facebook. Yes, the Staff are friendly, but they are not electricians or plumbers or masons, which is what you’ll really need. Yes, the view from the balconies are spectacular if you don’t mind the ants crawling up your legs. And yes, the breakfast is sumptuous but hard to see with the morning sun glaring in your eyes. Finally, if you’re a couple, demand an extra blanket when you check it because the one provided isn’t large enough for two.
