This is a well converted historic building right in the heart of Galle Fort, with a lovely atmosphere and cheerful staff. We had a loft room with a very unusual design. The sitting area was downstairs, with the wash basin in a cupboard and the shower and loo were also downstairs. You had to go up a flight of stairs...

Dear DeborahGill, It was wonderful to receive your review of GFH and descriptive account of your stay in the Loft Suite. The original structure of the 400 year old property before restoration was L - shape but the addition of the new wing and Loft Suites blends seamlessly following the same period architecture. The cupboard washbasin, shower follow Dutch period...

Stayed here for 2 nights in the library suite which when I first arrived wasn't to the standard of the modern hotel we had stayed in previously but the whole place grew on me. Lovely little pool in the courtyard and a veranda for evening drinks which seemed very popular. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel but many people...

Dear Amanda C, Many thanks for your review of the hotel and while you make reference to the words modern hotel I should add that GFH is a 17th century heritage hotel, over 400 years old but skillfully updated for the modern age. The antique ebony and satinwood chest and almirahs, two enormous king size beds and two large daybeds...

Old and beautiful architecture. Spacious and comfortable rooms. Very kind staff and amazing restaurant. This hotel is a great experience in Galle that I would recommend. Very peaceful break after a walk in the heat

Dear Adrien B, Thank you so much for reviewing the hotel and I am very pleased to read that you enjoyed the space and comfort of your room, restaurant, staff and architecture. The elegant colonial interiors of the hotel are definitely in stark contrast to the heat and bustle of the streets outside and a haven for gathering ones thoughts....

Had a very pleasant one night stay. Like many hotels in the fort it is quaint. If you want ultra modern everything sparkling it's not for you. Grotty looking polished concrete floors afterthought bathrooms are the norm. A 400yo building wasn't designed with an elegant ensuite in mind. Food, service, pool area great. Plus you can get a drink. The...

Dear Rob M, Thank you so much for reviewing your stay with us and it’s great to read you had a very pleasant one night stay. The hotel certainly evokes a subtle sense of colonial grandeur, skillfully integrating and blending 17th century Dutch architecture with today’s contemporary life and needs. Great shame you missed out on a beer on your...

Once again, I can't believe some of the earlier disparaging reviews that have complained that this delightful and historical shabby-chic treasure is both too old and too shabby! The building which houses this superb Hotel is fabulous and the common areas are very elegant and uplifting. We stayed in the Library room and virtually none of the furniture made sense...

Dear Keith 150, Your lengthy review and comments about your stay in the hotel are most welcome and I really appreciate your view in your closing paragraph that the hotel is most affordable. You also share my view that if you feel a connection with GFH through its historical aspect and gain an understanding of the Forts diverse culture, it...

This hotel is a restored Dutch warehouse and prides itself on its historic nature but we found it just old and musty. The room had no natural light and smelled of mildew. We were in a loft room, where everything was on the ground floor except the bed, which was up a flight of stairs, something I did not appreciate...

Dear LadyOnTheRoad132, Thank you very much for reviewing the hotel and it really is a shame you found this 17th century Dutch merchant house just old and musty! Certainly old because it is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which after more than 423 years has stood the test of time. Galle is a tropical destination, experiences heavy rain...

Common areas are rather nice yet nothing is really spic and span. Even the common space toilets were not that clean... Bedrooms are very shabby and the furniture is randomly placed and makes no sense. Not very clean at all. Soulless and lacking style and comfort although I have to say the bed was very cozy. Our bathroom was a...

Dear Isabelle P, I should mention that Galle Fort Hotel has been beautifully restored to reveal original Dutch Villa and its later English architectural Dutch influences. It is a heritage hotel located in the middle of World Heritage Galle Fort. The common areas to which you have referred to were once part of this dilapidated and abandoned former 17th century...

A truly great hotel with tonnes of character. Rooms are a bit quirky but you'd expect that being in an old hotel. Very friendly staff, great service, food terrific in a really nice setting overlooking the internal courtyard and pool. Really enjoyed Galle and this hotel made it which is also well located.
