Stayed in a traditional Japanese room which was lovely, very clean and comfortable. The staff were fantastic - very attentive. Hotel is in a great location, very central and not far from the train station. The staff kindly drove us back to the station with our luggage when we were leaving which was much appreciated.

I have a hard time buying the traditional factor when I take an elevator to the 6th floor and walk down a carpeted hallway to reach my traditional style room. The building is run down and our room smelled of mold and mildew. We had to keep opening the window to air it out and if the fan/AC thing (which... More

We are so sorry for your comment at our ryokan hotel. We are sorry about the smell issue. We do clean the room and deodorize before check-in. And the tatami mats are renewed last December. However we are sorry we did not know the smell issue you had. For the foods we are sorry about the inconvenience. We do not... More

I want to start off by saying that the staff was simply excellent, barring one issue (see below). They were friendly, and took the time to explain whatever we needed or wanted to know. However, the accommodations were simply sub-par. Our room stunk worse than I have ever smelled in a hotel of any sort before (presumably it was rotting... More

We are very sorry about the issue. First off the room you stayed was one of our standard Japanese style rooms. For the smell of the room we deodorize our rooms before check-in every day and we renew the tatami mats every year. We really did not know the smell issue at your room. We could do change-room if you... More

Hotel is about half a mile from station, but hotel will pick up and drop off. Staff very attentive and speak good English. Hotel had lots of foreign visitors, so everything explained clearly, for example onsen etiquette. Had traditional tatami matted room with view across old town, only slightly marred by the ugly yellow hotel annex across the street. Choice... More

This beautiful hotel is located in the historic centre of Takayama. We stayed for 1 night but we wish we had stayed longer. The onsen was great and not to hot at 40C. Even our kids could go and enjoyed it. In the rooms they provide Japanese yukatas to wear to diner. We were in a family room and there... More

This Ryokan had excellent service and a great 12 course dinner. The amount of fish was huge. The room was a traditional room, sleeping on tatami mats, and had an onsen bath as well as a western one. We were very well looked after and enjoyed Takayama very much.

We really enjoyed staying in this traditional hotel, our 5 and 8 year old loved the onsen and the food and service was excellent. We really enjoyed our visit to Takayama, it is a charming little town with an interesting historical district. I recommend this town and hotel - as a different and special Japan experience.

We stayed two nights at the Honjinhiranoya Kachoan in a Japanese style economy room with half board. This was our first time staying in a ryokan and it set the bar high. It was without doubt one of the most memorable places we have ever stayed at. The Japanese dinner (kasikei) was a sophisticated journey through Hida cuisine. Wearing yukata... More

We stayed here for two nights after being in a very traditional ryokan in Kanazawa. We stayed in suite 670. It was a hybrid room. A western TV and couch area, a western bed, but central Japanese furnishings including a lovely wood soaking tub. There was a nice little minibar in the TV room. The views were spectacular. The inn... More
