Had a wonderful time here with my wife. Such a relaxing place in Takayama. Staff were helpful and pleasant. Comfortable beds and generous rooms. If you are planning to use the private onsen as well, book first thing in the morning

I thought the hotel could provide shuttle bus service, but I could not contact them by phone or email. So I did a bit walking from the JR station to the hotel which takes almost 20-30mins.

Overlooking the down we stayed one night in this riokan. We had a spacious room with a bathroom for our own and confortable chairs. The onse was alright.
We liked especially the perfect diner, served in our room!

You may just need to build on your friendship. ;-)
One bit of advice is to a) communicate with them via email in very simple, direct, specific language - e.g. 'We need 3 beds' as opposed to 'there will be three of us' (which leaves a lot for interpretation).
