After reading positive reviews from TA and travel guides, i was looking forward to my very first Minshuku experience. However, the Japanese hospitality i so adored was marred by my very short 1 night stay at Sosuke. First off, clear walking directions were not given and it didn't help that the information centre outside the train station had a sulky...

At Minshuku Susoke Guest House you’ll receive a warm welcome from the friendly owners. A Minshuku is a traditional Japanese inn – a bit down from a Ryokan – where guest accommodation is both living and bed room. This one is 170 years old (but it has been renovated since!). It’s “shoes off” in these inns and they are exchanged...

This guesthouse has a good location in the city, approx 15 minutes from the center. Our room was quite small but clean, toilet in the corridor and common bath on ground floor. The common bath was really good. Japanese dinner and breakfast was served at low tables with place for your legs below, very comfortable and a change from sitting...

I stayed here during the spring matsuri 2012. You have to book early during the festival, and the place was full. It's excellent value for money, especially considering that the price includes breakfast and dinner. The location is convenient for the station, which is within easy walking distance (under 10 mins), and the centre of Takayama is about a quarter...

Usually in Japan, when you go to a hotel (not a hostel), foreigners are the minority, but Sosuke seems to have made a good name for itself with the tourist community. They speak good enough English and staff are friendly and helpful. Good price, and good food too. Bedroom was a bit small but overall just fine. It has a...

I lover evert minute of my stay in this lovely Minshuku. The food was great and the staff extremely friendly. Downside is the location, but if you can handle à 5-10 minute walk you are in no trouble here. i really recommend this adress.

Pros: Food is great, staff is kind, rooms are basically traditional with hot water and tea provided, tatami mats, etc. Cons: Location. It's nice that it's a 10 minute walk from the station, but the walk is a little gross. Not dangerous, just on a busy road in a run-down, strip-mallish feeling area. REALLY detracts from the experience of wandering...

In addition to being an excellent chef, Hide-san is very personable; he spent some time chatting with my husband, and his wife went out of her way to make our seven-year-old son feel at home (when he had finished dinner, she sat and watched TV anime with him while mom and dad leisurely enjoyed our food). Our room and the...

Minshuku Sosuke is a great place to stay in Takayama. We stayed here for the Spring Matsuri and it was a wonderful experience. The room was very spacious and clean, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are shared, but are very spacious and clean. It felt as if being part of a home. There is no internet...

This is a really nice little guest house. The staff were lovely and very helpful and the meals were very tasty. Free internet was available on a laptop near reception. The only downsize was the shared bathrooms, though there was never a wait for the shower. We were travelling with our 18 month old daughter, and though Sosuke was nice...
