Very friendly people, the whole of the Sumiyoshi staff. We had a room at the ground floor, with river view, quite romantic and a bit noisy in rainy weather. The room was not big, with private WC and washbasin, but the real thing happened in the two onsens > medium/small sized and very comfortable! Dinner and breakfast were of excellent...

Staying at this guest house was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. The whole experience was fantastic: clean comfortable room, impeccable service, great facilities, mind-blowing food and location. If you want a truly Japanese experience, this is it. We felt spoilt! I highly recommend trying the dinner and renting bikes next door.

You only need about 3 days to visit Takayama and if you are only staying a short time, then the Sumiyoshi Ryokan is a great experience. Firstly for the reviewers who were disappointed, I wonder if their expectations were too great to begin with. Keep in mind this ryokan is in an old building and in a small rural town...

We stayed in several ryokan during our time in Japan and this was our favourite. (Ryokan in general are a great idea if you are travelling with children - much better than renting multiple tiny generic hotel rooms.) We had the large family room which did not look directly out over the river like other rooms but was still lovely....

Awesome, traditional ryokan. Great hospitality, lovely food served in the room on a tatami mat. Nick nacks and antiques everywhere. Plus the bath was wonderful. Nice sized room and not too far from the town. Just excellent!

It is hard to review a Ryokan since I have only been in one. The building is not very nice, but the view from the room was great. We had the room with the shower and we could also enjoy the shared onsen, which you can close for privacy. We also had breakfast and dinner there and it was quite...

The location is quite good. The majority of rooms are facing the river. It is extremely lovely at summer. The rooms are in old style and you can find out a lot of antique things, paitings, etc. We felt like back to my grandma's house. The master is very friendly and the staff was very kind and cheerful. The food...

We stayed three nights in February ,when Takayama was under snow. We enjoyed it so much we went out of our way to return at the end of June for three nights. The first time I booked through Booking.com but this time I booked directly online and with a follow up phone call.I like the two rooms upstairs overlooking the...
