Let's deal with the negative first. From the front this looks like a traditional ryokan, but it isn't. That has been tacked on the front of a new building which is not in the historical part of the town. Having said that once you are inside you wouldn't know the difference - the rooms, the furniture, the service, the food,...

... so special- I don't want to miss it on my travel experience! Nice onsen, lovely spacious rooms with comfy Japanese beds, very helpful staff- super friendly!- and oichi breakfast ( I had Japanese, my boyfriend European- both very good). They even gave us bicycles for free and a German sightseeing map which we thought was so thoughtful and the...

This was a truly charming ryokan, just off the beaten path yet an easy walk to many attractions. There's a lovely lobby with a traditional fire pit for heating water, a nice public bath, and wonderful rooms. We ended up in one of the better suites (not sure why) with our own small firepit kitchen, plus a fridge and a...

We stayed in a deluxe room for one night. For a first-timer in Japan, this was a great introduction into traditional Japanese accommodation and etiquette. The room was spacious, and we were glad that we went for the option with a private bathroom. The futons were surprisingly comfortable, and we had one of the best nights sleep in Japan while we...

We stayed here 2 nights while visiting Takayama. This ryokan is within walking distance from the train station and is without serious fault in my view. The staff is always very helpful, though communication in English can be challenging at times for some individuals. The rooms are meticulously maintained, very clean and quiet. The main floor of the building is...

Rooms are big, clean and comfy. The owners speak good English. We tried breakfast and dinner. The portions were big and good quality but it was not our favourite meal in Japan so far. The hotel is close to the train and bus station.

Our first experience of a Ryokan and we really enjoyed it. Welcoming staff and a relaxing atmosphere. Made good use of the Onsen and liked the fact we were given kimonos to change into to wear around the Ryokan. You felt you could leave the outside world outside and enjoy the calm inside. Food was great too! Just a short...

Being in the 6th postiion of takayama hotels I had higher expectations in this Ryokan. It is pretty good but i don't know if it worths the money. Location is very good but i would make higher searchs to look for better places.

I've stayed in a few places like this so far on my trip and I must say this one is the only one I would choose not to come back to. The beds are the worst I've encountered on my trip but the pillows are the best I've encountered actually. They have these little signs in English everywhere that takes...

A fantastic stay at the Ryokan Asunaro. We were really impressed by the decor and welcoming atmosphere of the location and staff. Dinner was of the highest quality, and while not everything served was to our tastes the food was well prepared, looking and tasting amazing. The locations is great - easy to get to from the station and well...
