We stayed one night in a traditional tatami room at the alpen hotel. The European alpine theme in the lobby gave the hotel some charm, and this extended to the large rooms, nice onsen and in room bathroom. The included meals were a good introduction to upscale Japanese cuisine, with plenty of memorable dishes. And don't miss the evening entertainment...

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel. Overall, it is a well maintained place. The location is convenient just a few minutes walk from the bus station with great views on the surrounding mountains. We stayed in a more traditional Japanese room where you sleep on the floor on small futon. Not the most comfortable but I experienced worst in...

We stayed at the Kamikochi Alpen Hotel on either side of a two-day walk in the mountains. The welcome was friendly and the room was spacious and clean. The evening meals were excellent – served kaiseki style. The communal (single sex) bathing was a bit challenging for us Brits! We would thoroughly recommend walking more than an hour away from...

I booked a hiker's bed but to my delight i had the whole room to myself. I took one of the 4 beds available since the other 3 beds was not occupied. Location wise was just a stone throw from the famed Kappa Bridge. You have to take the left turn from the the bridge and walk about 200m to...

Location gorgeous,Food good and staff helpful. Spacious room. Did not feel it justified the money we paid for it .Would have liked the option of having a shower rather than an onsen. Signposting was poor if you are looking for something in English.

My wife and I wished to do some hiking in the Japanese Alps, but without camping or multi day trails. Although day trips from Matsumoto are possible, it's a lot of travel, and after a hike, getting into the onsen is far superior to getting on a buses and trains. Accommodations in Kamikochi are for the most part expensive spas,...

This is an amazing location. The mountains abound in an amazing river setting. The hotel is full service and is more keenly priced for an expensive destination in general. We stayed in a tatami room which was nice and trad. The hotel served full (20 course, not quite but you get the drift) dinner in the room. If you are...
