The hotel was very old. I stayed at Annex hotel. When I finished checkin, the staff give me the free milk for welcome drink. I was pleased to get the milk which was very fresh. The room was very small and old but the room price was reasonable. The hotel was located nearby JR station within 5-8 minutes.

Read the reviews and was worried the room will be too small for Family of 2 Adults and 2 teenagers. Surprisingly the room size was fine, only the toilet is quite small.
Smile hotel is a nice and simple hotel. Close to Otaru JR station is its plus point. A bus stop is also within distance for travelling to Otaru Aquarium. Breakfast was good too!

One of the closest hotel to the Otaru station. If you need to catch the first train the next morning, this is definitely your choice to avoid a long walk in the cold dark morning.

Hotel is friendly (yeah.. as like the name).

Room is slightly small.. or rather standard Japanese room. The bathroom is too small for family oriented room.

WiFi is good, F&B, mall surrounding the hotel.. convenient!

The 2 sections of the Green Hotel are across the street from each other. The check-in and lobby computer stations are on the north side of the street in the Honkan (Main Building), and the restaurant and cheaper rooms are in the Annex on the south side of the street. You can have some small bottles of Yamanaka Dairy whole (old-fashioned type "whole") milk at check-in time. You pay for your stay at check-in. They take Amex cards as well as cash. If you're staying in the Annex, once you pay and get your key you grab your luggage and cross the fairly busy street. There's a light at the corner if you want to use a crosswalk. If you have a car, there are about 12 spaces out front which cost and extra Y600 per day. If you book online and pay cash, you get a discount depending on the building, room and number of people.

Annex:
The rooms in the annex were pretty small, which isn't surprising in a Japanese business hotel, but the bathrooms were extra-small even for Japan. I ripped the stem out of my watch on the door frame while sidling out one morning. There also wasn't much in the way of decoration for the bare white walls. But for Y3500 for a single, it can't be beat. There are no non-smoking rooms in the annex. If you want one of these, you have to reserve a room in the Main Building. You can open your windows in this hotel though for some real air. Your card room key also opens the outside door key to the Annex as no-one is at the old front desk there and the door is locked all the time. Also, if you want web connections in every room, you have to stay in the Main Building (Honkan). The Annex has no connection. Bring a cable because it's not wireless but LAN ports. There's a washing machine and drier in the Main Building also, but none in the Annex.

Breakfast was an extra Y800 which you could purchase at the front desk in the morning. Alternatively, you could walk down the street to the NW to a convenience store or down the hill toward the port to a Lawson. There also was a Lotteria in the station if you wanted to get a 10-high cheese stacker and a coronary.

It was a place to stay, adequate and convenient. The arcade was to the south on the other side of the station, and the canal area and city museum were closeby at the bottom of the hill. Buses to Shukutsu to see the herring mansion and Nishin Goten houses started in front of the station. About the only thing that wasn't within walking distance was the ferry to Niigata, if that's in your plans. To get there, a taxi would be realistic, especially with luggage.

The only other hotel I've stayed at in Otaru is the Hotel Vibrant, an old bank down by the Post Office and Canals, but since staying at the Green, I've found it good enough. I don't spend much time in the hotel, so it's just a place to store luggage and crash. The only advantage the Vibrant has is that it's right next to the Kita-no-Ice-Cream-Ya-san where you can get uni (sea urchin) flavored ice cream.

Stayed here for two nights and the location is superb. Otaru is small and walkable to almost everywhere but this hotel is one of the best in my opinion, as it is just a few minutes walk from the train station and bus terminal. Best location when you are rushing for a train!
Note that it is a very old (but renovated) hotel and u shouldn't expect the best of facilities. Corridors, lift, showers are all still considered old. The room I was in was clean though, and the WIFI is fast and great. Coin laundry also available in the lobby. I overheard other customers at the reception complaining about things not working in their room though, so i guess its luck, since this hotel is of some age.
But other than that, no other complaints, considering its location and price.

Smile Hotel is a 3 star, well located hotel. It's 250m from the Otaru station which is where both trains and buses stop. Smile has access to some local shopping and 5-10 mins walk to the canal area. Our stay included western breakfasts consisting of simple meal of breads with butter and jam, coffee, egg and bacon served by wonderfully meticulous lady in a tiny kitchen. The bedrooms and bathrooms are small but this is to be excepted in Japan. I found this to be a well priced hotel, with helpful staff in a great location

Stayed one nite SEPT 2017 , 2 pax but given 4 pax room. Consider very cramp for 4 pax. Room very clean, however bathroom door is in bad condition, wardrobe is old furnitue. Looks like Smile Hotel is into upgrading process, saw workers working on the carpets. At the Lobby , have self service WELCOME DRINK ,MODERN COFFEE MAKER COUNTER. Tasty coffee. Staff very pleasant, east to get around, quiet, carpark right infront of hotel, just one bus stop from OTARU main bus/train station.

Great Location if you takes JR train.
Stayed 3 night for the end Jul Otaru Oshio Matsuri.

Very basic and now the breakfast was down to simple bread and coffee.
No more fancy stuffs mentioned in the reviews I read.

I would said the standard is below Toyoko Inn. There is no Toyoko inn in Otaru and
this hotel is the closest choice.

Anyway, with the price and friendly staffs, it was a good deal.

Hotel keep our luggages at another side corner of counter, cover by a net without bell was not safe.

I am small size Asian wear S or Xs, the bathroom was the smallest compare to all 10 hotels that we stayed in our 3 weeks Hokkaido spring trip. We stayed here for one night was ok but not more than one night as I really hate to shower inside such a small shower tub. Room size was a bit small & wifi was ok.

The location was good, 4 minutes walking distance to Otaru Station. We walk to all sightseeings around since Otaru town was recommended by foot to enjoy. Convenient store Lawson was 2 minutes by foot; Ramen Tokaiyaらーめん渡海家 was a humble ramen shop in quiet street, 1 minutes walk by foot. It also highly recommended by local if you would like to try different ramen. We very choosy what we eat, this was the best ramen ever & the price was very reasonable!!

Hotel open car park just right in front, loading unloading luggages was very convenient, there was a few umbrellas you can borrow too!

We didn't see any compliment bottles of milk around counter that shown on the hotel photos! We will not consider this hotel again unless there is a discount price .

Thanks for the vote if you found this helpful :D
