Let’s start with the
Service staff. Customer facing warm attentive accommodating responsive smiling. Choose any positive word and it will be here in this wonderful onsen resort family managed with the son at the front to welcome you. Shiro San. Mother and owner father are both very active in the daily management
Lobby evening cocktail hour is pleasant and relaxing. Sink into the warm ambiance of the lobby coffee beer area with eye catching decor n warm service. Cookies nuts beer coffee n wine are served here.
Breakfast n dinner are a delight n foodie experience especially in room and whether in the different dinning areas western or Japanese. Such a delightful experience to have both like we did.
Food n beverage is excellent and we totally enjoyed our 2nd and 3rd nights dinner in room.
Onto the onsen now. There are 2 public onsen areas and I tried both. I was totally blown away by the evening session at the onsen located at the lower level. Out of this world is the description with
Indoor hot pool
Outdoor hot pool
Outdoor cold pool
Sauna n steam room n
Fireplace
The onsen on the lobby level is different as it has a high tech sauna room with a hot area where you can lie down to enjoy the heat on back or front.
Car park is ample and a very very short drive to the lobby drop off pick up with a shelter should it rain.

A must come n try

It’s a little ryokan run by old locals. Communication might be a bit difficult, but if you try, it will be manageable! You will have to choose the breakfast and dinner timings, as well as for the private onsen when you first check in. For us, check-in was at 3pm (a little bit late imo) and check-out is at 10am.

We booked a room that comes with breakfast, dinner and booking of the private onsen. The room was very humble that comes with a toilet (no shower/bath as you wash yourself during the onsen) and a balcony kinda thing. The vibes were very comfy and simple, which I enjoyed. Dinner was very very delicious and filling. There was beef sukiya, sushi and tempura (plus rice). For the private onsen, you‘ll have to head down to get the key and go back up to the onsen. It has an inside and outside onsen with an outside view. It is only for 45 mins but it is enough for a 35 mins soak and 10 mins wash. (30 mins is more than enough for a hot soak)
The staff were very helpful and the entire experience was very positive. If you are looking for a posh experience, there are other more expensive ryokans out there. A little downside is that they only provide yukata that are worn only indoors, so there isn’t any outdoor yukata for you to wear out and take pictures. But other than that, it’s really nice!

The ryokan was beautiful. The room, garden and onsens both public and en-suite were all stunning.

We joined the bonfire with free marshmallows, shaved ice and iced beer. My kid was happy feeding the Koi too.

The staff showed good hospitality and were friendly.

For food, I like their breakfast more than dinner. Dinner was tasty but not as abundant as expected.

We've stayed in Kourakuen during the fire accident in Dec. We were very lucky that we managed to get all our belongings after the accident. Staff in there were very helpful during this stressful time and most importantly they were very nice to provide all the warm clothes and food for us in -10 degrees Celsius day and a place to stay.

Most importantly during the evacuation we must leave our belongs in the hotel room and we had a fair bit of valuable camera and cash in the room when it happened. After the fireman give them the clear to go back to the hotel to grab what's left inside the hotel, I was very surprised that nothing were missing and the staff there were honest and very helpful.

I'm sure will go back there again when they finished rebuilding the hotel!

My friend and I visited Kourakuen last winter during the Otaru Lantern Festival. We stayed at a standard room with dinner + breakfast plan. This ryokan was the best ryokan I had experienced in Japan. I was touched by the staff's helpfulness and hospitality, though they didn't speak English. The dinner was fresh, delicious and generously offered with variety such as beef shabu-shabu, some fresh & raw seafood, and other delicacies (we couldn't finish all in the set).

The highlight of this ryokan was the onsen, both in-door and outdoor. I just understood how blissful it was to totally relax in a heated pool at night and enjoy the snow flakes floating around in the air. The quality of the water was good, as well as the bathing products provided. Though being in a high season, the bath house was not crowded at all. I truely experienced tranquility and peaceful relaxation.

The standard room was spacious enough, having only toilet without bathing unit. If you are a big fan of sento or onsen, standard rooms are totally okay. The futon was comfortable and I had such a deep sleep. Each room had a garden view, which at that time was covered in white with snow. All amenities were provided, even a Yukata. You don't really need to bring anything except outfit for the next day.

Healthy breakfast was served in a set, very authenti-Japanese. Every portion seemed small but we again could not finish all due to the variety of the selections (i.e. rice, umeboshi, mentaiko, seaweed, miso soup, special kind of tofu, steamed vegetable, and some fish). You can also ask for more.

We paid 17,000 JPY each for this one-night package, which was very reasonable compared to other ryokans (and given that it was Friday night).

Check in and check out was hassel free. The staff also called a cab for us. It took around 1,500 - 2,000 JPY to Minami-Otaru station.

As a budget travaller, this hotel is too expensive, but with the regular price even on X'mas eve, we spent our luxury holiday there.
We stayed in the "Hagi" room with private outdoor onsen. It's a bonus in the snowing Xmas. Room is very large. Dinner and breakfast included were average.. many dishes, tasted depends. Very comfortable room, especially the pillow, it's the best in my life. good wifi.
The hotel is located half hr bus (#23, Yen230) from Otaru station, a ministore just outside the hotel. Public large onsen available but you would spend most of the time in your private room.
Shower (beside own outdoor onsen) is not available in winter, go to the public one.
Check-in / out is fast, booking is easy from the hotel website. Fast email communication for query.

The Ryokan is the best in Otaru. Service is top notch. The private onsen is beautifully decorated. Kaiseki dinner is sumptuous and truly reflect japanese meticulous attention to details. The overall environment is a true reflection of Japanese hospitality.

Makes you feel at home right from the start.
You will be taking off your shoes from the moment you enter the lobby and you will be walking around barefooted or with socks like in your own home. Room is beautifully furnished with many toiletries provided. Onsen was nice and comfortable as well with a nice outdoor onsen with good garden view. Dinner was delicious and exquisite, breakfast as well. Must stay here if you are visiting the town.

This is a perfect option for someone who is willing to experience a modern ryokan.
15 minutes away from the Otaru Chikko JR station by cab. Less than Y2000 the ride (US$20.00).

The room with outdoor bath is amazing (Popura), huge space, tatami floors, beautifully decorated and comfortable. The outdoor bath - rotemburo - is beautiful, stone built with no control over water temperature. The scenery of the outdoor bath is the garden (in our case covered in snow), and we managed to spot little wild life like squirrels.

The private outdoor shower does not work during the winter season so the plumbings wont freeze, but that was not a problem. There is a common bathing room which is spotless. There is also a private toilet/ sink in the room.

It is possible to rent the communal bath for yourself at night for an hour, so you can enjoy a bigger bath indoors and also a sauna with your friends and family.

Our dinner was served in our room, kaiseki style and delicious. The lady who was attending us was very polite and since we were curious, explained everything we were about to eat in English and also when she was setting the bed.

The breakfast was in a common area with a private table, also kaiseki style with an communal table for coffee, salad and extras to serve it yourself. Everything is beautifully prepared and everyone in the hotel is very attentious.

It was the perfect experience and I will definitely try to go again.

Kourakuen is located at about 30 mins. by bus from JR Otaru Station. The Ryokan is newly renovated after a fire in 2014. Over half of their rooms have private hot spring. The set dinner is served in room and breakfast is at the main dinning area on the 1st floor. The food is average, may be due to the cold weather which makes the food not hot enough. Not sure why they do not serve the food in hot pot which like some onsen Ryokan do. Overall it is a good choice to stay with Kourakuen if you plan to visit Otaru and want to stay in atraditional Japanese Ryokan to soak in the hot spring nearby.
