Located just a stone’s throw from the JR Otaru station, this hotel is very conveniently located.

We arrived in Otaru early and as it was too early to check in, we left our luggages with the hotel and went out sightseeing before returning in the evening to check in.

Took a walk to Otaru canal before making our way up to Tenguyama before returning to check in in the evening.

Thought the room was slightly smaller than the Dormy Inn Express Hakodate Goryokaku but definitely much more crowded here.

There is a natural hot spring communal bath available within the hotel that can be used from 3pm to 9am overnight. Body care, head care and foot care massage are available at a price.

Wifi access is available though a little weak.

Complimentary noodle soup is available from 9.30pm to 11pm. Buffet breakfast has a good variety of items.

This inn is actually a hotel in disguise. The amenities and facilities are very user-centred.
At the lobby while waiting to check in, you can find free flow of freshly ground coffee at your disposal, hence the lobby reeks of coffee bean aroma.

There are multiple lifts serving the guests and they are pretty fast too. For the elderly folks who need a rest, a simple seat is designed within each lift to serve that purpose. How thoughtful is that!

The room is cosy and the bedside lamp has a dinner function to alternate brightness for your convenience. The pillow is splendid and feels like our Tempur pillow back home, providing the firm support that our necks need. The TV system is a smart one as we are able to choose “do not make the room” on our Home Screen. Netflix and YouTube are available too, providing us some entertainment for us who are non-Japanese. The water pressure is good for shower, and there is sliding door that separates the the bedroom and the bath/toilet areas.

The buffet breakfast is worth our money as we find everything is so systematic. Every staff knows exactly what to do, and it is not chaotic at all. A food spread that can match a 5-star hotel, which includes grilled scallops, grilled mackerel and salmon, and even crab meat omelette for your dining pleasures.

We stayed only for 2 nights but are extremely happy with the hotel! (Located next to JR Otaru station)

Just stayed at Western-Japanese room with 2 twin beds and Tatami room.

1. Location
Convenient, across from Otaru Station. Canal district is about 7-10min walk and shopping everywhere. Glass stores and main tourist area: it's a quite a walk if you don't take taxi or car. Has parking on basement and parking attendant was very helpful and hard working.

2. Room
I had Western/Japanese room and 3 of us stayed very comfortable. It was on corner room and enjoyed both sides of views. Window does open but one of the window on the sides opens all the way without any screen or safety bar, so I would not stay in this room OR don't open the windows at all if you have children. Cold breeze from windows were refreshing for us.

There was separate toilet and vanity/bath area was good. Bath has small tub but it was really really old.

3. Public bath
There are public bathroom on 2nd floor which was VERY nice for this size of the hotel. Coin laundry (free laundry, paid for dryer, separate units) was inside the public bath. Dryer DOES dry well within 30min which was very helpful.

I liked the location and convenient size, but hotel is getting old and needed renovations. I can tell that this hotel was built in the 80s and did not do much of the updates.

As soon as you come out of Otaru station, you'll see this hotel right across the road. They staff are great and it's incredibly clean and well maintained. The room size is decent for Japan too!

They also have saunas/ Japanese public baths but we never used them as we just didn't have time during our short stay.

Great location across the street from the Otaru train station. Shopping across the street and many good restaurants near by.
Sight seeing the cities attractions all within walking distance. Taxi service along with bus service right outside the hotel doors. Besides the location being perfect the hotel offers a restaurant and public bath (Onsen).
Rooms were small but clean and the staff was very friendly. I will be staying here again the next time I’m in Otaru.

I booked non-smoking room on Agoda. Upon arrival at the room, the room (on 2/F) smelled bad and is obviously a smoking room. We had to go back to reception. Upon checking, the staff insisted agoda booked a smoking room for us, and asked us to call agoda for the error.

We found the request incredulous and it was definitely not our fault, not to mention the high cost associated to making calls to Agoda for this.

We asked the hotel to make the call for us, then after a while, the staff came back and said they have another room for us, which is a non-smoking room.

Before accepting the new room and getting the key, I did ask and double-confirmed with the staff whether this is an non-smoking room, the staff said yes.

Then, when I went to the new room (also on 2/F), it still smelled really bad. I later found out the whole of 2/F is for smoking rooms. If meant the staff blatantly lied to us when she reassured us the new room is a non-smoking room.

As alcohol smell is highly irritating to my respiratory system, it meant a very unpleasant night of stay. Moreover, the service is really disappointing as the staff for sure knew the new room was also smoking room, but decided to lie to us and offered a false solution which did not solve the problem at all.

This is my first time to Hokkaido and I booked this hotel is mainly for skiing.

Checking in at 15:00, the receptionist present the key to me right away without any delay is a very good start.

Room: With 2 beds, size is good, better than what I thought as the one I was staying in Sapporo is actually quite small, at least we can open our suitcases here in the room. And bed is comfortable as well.

View: Very nice with city view, can see the JR station, and can see snowing all the time (of course it depends on weather)

Location: VERY GOOD! Just 1-2mins walking distance from the Otaru JR station. You will see this hotel in front of you when you get out from the station. We are traveling with 2 big suitcases and nothing too difficult for us.

Attractions: 10-15mins walking distance to the Otaru River, 15-20mins to Otaru Music Box Museum (But you will find there are many stores along the street when you are on the way there)

Skiing: We choose to go Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort as it's most suitable for beginner. But unfortunately I can only provide information about the taxi fare to get there. From the hotel to the ski resort around JPY6000 and back to hotel from there will be around JPY5500

To conclude this is a very good hotel which is very closed to the JR station & not far from those attractions, not bad, absolutely value for money. GO FOR IT.

*They provide charger in room, coffee machine will be available a the lobby

Before visiting, I've heard this is a newly designed nice hotel, with good onsen (hot spring), so my expectation was rather high.
But as soon as I checked in, it was completely the opposite.
As soon as I checked in and entered my guest room, I found hanged towels, and several men's clothes in there, then came to understand it was the room belonging to another customer.
I came back to the front, and explained, but the staff just said plainly, `We are sorry, now this is the key of a different room.'
I felt very dissapointed not only because of the wrong room accident, but because they lack sincerity and friendliness.
The room was stylish, the onsen (hot spring) was very good, location is convenient (just in front of the Otaru station), but their hospitality really need to be improved, so that visitors can feel `welcome'.

I was really very disappointed with the two male staffs of the hotel. They seems to hate tourists. I have wrote them a letter but receive no reply, so I decided to share my experience and hope people will not have to be discriminated by them.

Dear Management of Dormy Inn Otaru,

I would like to congratulate the Dormy Inn for winning the awards from Trip Advisor website.

I totally agree that Dormy Inn Otaru desires the award for the best location, the facility provided, cleanliness and the choice of breakfast is impressive.

I am not a stranger to Japan. For the past decade, I have been traveling to your country more then twenty times, but I had the worst experience in my life during my stay in your premium hotel.

Upon checking in, we were greeted by a beautiful and friendly lady at the reception. She was very professional and caring to assist us with our belongings till the rooms are ready for us.

After we were back from our lunch, a nasty male receptionist took over the reception and gave us the most unwelcome service I had in Japan but we were just thinking he might had a hard day so we didn't take it to heart.

When I needed a TaQBin service and was asking the same guy if the hotel or anywhere that I could obtain. He then leave me standing without a word n back with a list of prices of delivery and asked me if the price is fine with me with a hush stare. I really appreciate that he even make a call to confirm the address in a very polite manner to the recipient, which means he is capable to provide quality service but he choose not to be nice towards me. The lady staff at the reception was there and i can tell that she felt sorry for me.

The next morning, when we were checking out, another male reception officer was very rude as well. He would speak to us loudly and unwillingly. I have never seen that kind of attitude even in the smallest hotel in Japan and why this happened in a award winning hotel?

I do not know why I desired treatment like such when I was not even rude or unreasonable. These guys seems to hate tourists even if I was smiling and asking politely when I was requesting of their service. Fortunately the ladies at the reception were very professional that made up with the unpleasant provided by the two male staffs. I would suggest the management will look into the training of your employer, which seems there are a void in your hotel training.

I am not sure if I will choose to stay again next year but I hope the excellence of the hotel and nation will not be demolished by these two male employers as when the image is broken and it will be a pity for those who work hard to establish the good name of the Japan nation...

Thank you for the hospitality shown by the ladies staffs of Dormy- Inn Otaru. Well done ladies, we appreciate your kindness and professionalism.

Yours Sincerely,
Ng

No, hot spring in Japan are almost universally single-sex. Different-sexed couples need to each go to their separated side of the baths, with no contact (physical or visual) between them. There might be some very remote, outdoor hot springs in the woods of Hokkaido that are still co-ed...the way such springs were in the olden days..but when Japan began incorporating Westernized customs at the end of the 19th century, co-ed bathing was discontinued. Also, if you have any tattoos, you will not be allowed in the hot springs. I am told this is an anti-Yakuza measure. - Skiold

Just take the train to Otaru from New Chitose Airport and stop at JR Otaru station. You can take a bus but likely to need to change bus at Sapporo. Time wise by bus will be slightly longer but not that much cheaper compared to the train.
