Our hotel presents a total of 19 rooms of various styles. The decoration and furniture of each room is unique. From floor to ceiling, the decor and furniture are all totally coordinated. We make every effort to make our rooms as comfortable as possible so you can you can enjoy your stay to the full. The furniture is inspired by Japanese antiques, and antiques from the period of Li Dynasty and Ming Dynasty also appear in our rooms. The walls are painted with Japanese traditional plastering materials. The walls are also decorated with Japanese traditional paper, the texture of which gradually increases with time; its permeability is said to be good for people's health! Our rooms have a distinct air of nostalgia. Spending time here can make life feel more meaningful. All the rooms are named after writers, poets and artists with some indelible connection to Otaru.

Detailed Reviews
Ultra modern Onsen with kaiseki dinner and authentic Japanese breakfast. The rooms are spacious and well appointed…Onsen is small, but had it all to myself! If you prefer a more traditional ryokan/onsen, you might go somewhere else. All drinks included, but the bar has limited hours. I would prefer a more traditional outdoor onsen. Nice outdoor view from the room! Architecturally pleasing!

We stayed in Kuramure as a side swing from our stay in Otaru.
Kuramure is not a hip hotel nor a traditional ryokan.
The staff and service is immaculate.
The hotel is converted from a quandrangle of old warehouse. The main entrance is hidden, yet you are shuttled from the Otaru chikko station or we were picked up from Hilton Otaru. so staff are waiting for you in front of the hotel.
The hotel is modern black, grey and white tone decorated. It's rather dim throughout especially the corridor leading to the rooms. The check in was swift and impressive. We were served with green tea and Japanese sweets, hot towel.
Make sure yoiu inform the hotel the language you speak. Every room is served by one staff who also serves your dinner.
We had a maisonette type suite -- two-storey. The lower level is with a living room with a floor to ceiling glass window with the view of a garden. The access to the garden is from a glassdoor in the living room. There is a tatami bedroom next to the living room. The stairs lead to the bathroom with separate toilet and washbasin area and another bedroom with twins. Day robe, pjamas are prepared for you. The bathroom amenities are just great and ample.
The dinner and breakfast is served in a nice private room. Meals are creative Japanese fusion style. I was kind of sick the night, so I ordered western style breakfast which is like a continental breakfast with just one toast, two eggs, a few pieces of fruits which was a bit disappointed.
The most disappointing is the onsen. The indoor onsen is about the size of 5 standard bathtub, dim, bare. The outdoor one is not exactly outdoor, it's more of a balcony type onsen confined with three walls and the front is partially walled. They should add a jaccucci in the onsen. There is no sauna room too.
Kuramure is not for family with kids or teens, there is no activity for them in the compound.
Afterall, it's still a good experience.

My boyfriend & I just returned from 3 nights at Kuramure & enjoyed it. However, I would note that Kuramure feels more like a design hotel than a traditional ryokan. We really enjoyed the design - a set of low, grey clad buildings (the feel of warehouse conversions), with a clean, simple interior of natural colors & woods. With snow deep on the ground & falling every day, the place had a sense of muffled serenity. The tea room is lovely & I would recommend booking it for an informal tea ceremony. Our room (2-storey maisonnette with tatami beds & garden view) was spacious (3 rooms), comfortable & warm, with plenty of natural light. The men's & women's public baths are the same, with one outdoor & one indoor bath. The outdoor bath has a lovely view over a stream (striking in the snow), but the indoor bath is rather small & underwhelming. The food (kaiseki style dinners, Japanese breakfasts) was plentiful, creative & very good; meals are served in a different individual, beautifully designed room each time. All drinks, including a good range of sake, local wines, spirits, etc., are included, which is a nice touch. The bar/library area has a fun collection of records, which guests are encouraged to play as impromptu DJs (this contributes to the design hotel atmosphere). The service was generally very good; it helps to know some basic Japanese, as usual. HOWEVER, our one real, significant complaint had to do with the other guests (or perhaps our expectations) - we had expected a quiet, relaxing onsen retreat typical of our stays at ryokan in Japan; what we found was a design hotel full of (foreign) guests talking loudly (including in the onsen), clattering noisily in the hallways & generally behaving inconsiderately. I would still recommend Kuramure - its design, overall aesthetic & uniqueness make it well worth a visit - but have concluded that this may be a better place to go for a fun weekend with friends than for a peaceful retreat.

Wanted to come to this hotel three years ago, but it was fully booked then. So this time, I booked months in advance. And was I so WRONG! Two words to sum up my stay "VERY DISAPPOINTED"!!! Stayed for three nights, found the hotel to be very poorly managed! I would say most aspects were below Japanese standards! The attitude of the front desk staff was fairly poor! The food quality was poor, in particularly the breakfast! Dinner was average, nothing special! The so-called open bar is with very low quality wines that I did not even attempt to order! The worst thing that happened and a matter which I found it to be very OFFENSIVE was that a laminated note written in Chinese stating all the "Not-to-dos" in the public bath area was placed on the table in my room after the first night of my stay. This happened when I didn't even go to the public bath! I am very curious as to why such nicely presented note was prepared at the first place????? I am paying for the most expensive room, and maybe at least a nice welcome note from the hotel is more appropriate!
I have been to various hot-springs hotel in Japan, and this hotel would rank at the bottom. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!

The Kuramure is not a place for noisy people out for a good time. But if you are looking for an almost monastic peace and quiet in elegant but very modern surroundings with superb Japanese cuisine you will not be disappointed.
We stayed as a small family party of two generations who had lived in Japan previously. We occupied a Japanese-style suite on the ground floor with a view of an autumn maple and our own o-furo (bath). The service was quietly efficient and the staff friendly. Some English is spoken but as always in Japan, Japanese helps even if it only indicates that you have made the effort. Some of the part-time staff are undergraduates at one of the local universities with a knowledge of English.
Privacy is perhaps the main characteristic of the Kuramure and if you value it, the Kuramure can be recommended without reservation,

This is the second time i stay in Kuramure - i chose Kuramure again as their 2-story rooms allow 4+ people to stay, and their delicious Kaiseki. The location of Kuramure is a bit off from the center of Otaru (e.g.,the canal) , so driving would be more convenient (although they have shuttle bus offer).
Kaiseki is served in their restaurant at either 6 or 7 pm, & breakfast at 8:00- 9:30 am. Comparing with my last stay 5 years ago, i found the cusine is less unique as it used to be, but it is still above the standard among most Kaiseki from the Ryokans.
The Hot Spring they have including indoor and out door as well as private bath in the guest rooms.
Their pricing could be varied due to hot season, and their online booking system is easy and available in English.
After all it is still the best choice i would recommend

Stayed @ Kuramure few years ago but this is still the ryokan offers best Kaiseki Cuisine I have ever had, among all other Japanese resort I visited. The quality of the food product, the way they served the dishes definitely worths with it price.
The room is good , while I think the location is a bit off , but they have shuttle to ease the commute.
overall, if I visit Otaru again , this is still my first choice.

Designed by the same architect of Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu, another superb Ryokan in Hokkaido. Meal service is perfect, free flow of drinks in bar and during meals is a nice touch.
Will definitely come back again.

The hotel is 10mins drive from Otaru, sitting on quiet country side. Garden is nice, breakfast is nice, the share hot spring is tiny but very nice. The bar provide free flow drink however we were too busy taking care of our two year old girl. I believe it's a very good bar.
The problem is, the room is not really impressive considering the price. It actually not spacious and look quite old. The only chair in the room is not comfortable and the table in living room is too big and too short... You actually have problem sitting in the living room to enjoy the garden view.

We stayed at a so called garden view room which view was looking at a wall 4 feet away from the window. The bedroom has 2 very very small square windows near to the ceiling with no curtains. The sun came in at 4am and it was quite a nuisance.
The hotel seeves mediocre quality food, the cooked fish and sashimi were not fresh.
I would not recommend it!

Yes, they do have private onsen in every room, but the one I had was in the form of a bath tub with hot spring water
