This was the most unique part of our 2-week Japan vacation. Hakone National Park was beautiful, and Rikyuan was wonderful. The staff was so friendly and their attention to detail made this experience perfect. We wore kimonos and slippers all around the hotel (which is fairly small, allowing for a really personal experience). The dinner was fabulous, it was so many unique, delicious, and fresh dishes. It was served to us into our room, course by course. This was my first time visiting an onsen, and we got to try both the public and private ones (which you just have to write your name down to reserve a time slot). This was a great experience. Breakfast was in a common dining room, and was such a treat! Also so many little dishes in beautiful pottery. I had read other reviews about smoky smells, which I didn’t have a problem with even though I am usually sensitive to that.

We stayed 2 nights and had a great time. The food was fantastic and the onsen were nice. Decent location for catching a bus to other parts of hakone. The staff were friendly and had very good english. We would return to Rikyuan again.

We spent one night here and opted for the full Ryokan experience with a private onsen. It was very relaxing, especially after all of the miles we put on our legs touring Japan. The private onsen was clean and relaxing to use. The dinner and breakfast were all traditional and a great experience to try some traditional cuisine we otherwise would not have ordered on our own. Getting here was a bit challenging due to some buses and trains not running when we went (Dec 2019) but that was due to storm damage. The person who looked after us (the Nepalese woman, sorry forgot her name!) was wonderful and took great care of us.

Service was the best I ever had, I can t rememberer the name of the young man looking after us but he was the kindest person ever. We fell very welcome from the 1st minute. The Ryokan is beautiful, exactly what I hoped for, not one of those multi floors Ryokan with elevator. This is a traditional house, with a few rooms, decoration is top notch. Rooms are beautiful and the room outdoor onsen outside is amazing. The private onsen is definitely worth trying, georgeous feel ! Honestly after our cold day walking around Hakone everything fell amazing and special. Breakfast was actually good and big, however we were a bit disappointed on the dinner. Beware that they serve healthy meals based on the Monks diet, no meat, raw fish only and veggies. For our taste and overall cost we expected to be blown away with flavours which wasn't the case (maybe 2-3 dish were great in flavours out of the 11). I m sure some would love the simplicity but we did another cheaper Ryokan in our trip where the food was seriously outstanding and impressive in terms of richness of flavours. If food for you is a major criteria of the experience you might want to try somewhere else but for the rest it has been the best experience / service I had in my life. Oh and the futons are great, I slept so so well

Accessible to tourists 2 minutes from bus stop. Clean rooms. Loved the private onsen. If you have time try the round one that you have to reserve for. It has a different vibe. Very polite Nakai. Chef was accomodating as well and asked us about how the food was. It was delicious. It really was filling even with small portions. Feels really private. Overall good experience.

My partner and I were after a traditional ryokan experience to relax after a week spent in Tokyo. We’re so glad we found Rikyuan. From the moment we arrived the staff went above and beyond to make out stay memorable. We booked a room with a private onsen and being able to relax in this at the end of the day was blissful. The traditional style beds were very comfortable but the highlight was the food. Dinner was served in our room and breakfast in the dining room with a huge array of delish dishes. The bus stop was a two minute walk around the corner and this gave us easy access to the sights around Hakone. We only wish we could have stayed longer.

We were searching for a traditional ryokan with private outdoor onsens in an off-the-beaten path area with very good food and not too exorbitant prices and we hit the jackpot with Rikyuan. While we had to take a train to Odawara and then a regional bus to Daigatake (I believe that was the name of our stop), it was a quick 3 min. walk from the bus stop to the ryokan. We sprung for a room with a private onsen and it was worth every penny. The dinners and breakfasts were AMAZING with so much food we were bursting every night and morning. There's not a ton around but you can hop back on that bus to get to other attractions. You can also walk to the Lalique museum, some botanical gardens, and another museum. There's not much else within walking distance but we welcomed the serenity after the hustle and bustle of tokyo and kyoto. The onsen in the room was amazing. There are also 2 public ones you can book to use privately. The water truly does feel like it has magical properties and we bathed several times a day. Warning for some: 1) you are sleeping on tatami mats and sitting on the floor for meals in the traditional Japanese manner 2) the food can be slightly adventurous and seafood heavy but it is all delicious 3) in the rooms with private outdoor onsens the shower is outside as well. All in all, we were thrilled with this place. Wouldn't recommend for those with children.

From the moment you walk in the door at Rikyuan, you can sense how unique the experience is. It’s a family-run ryokan and the sense of hospitality is in every interaction. We found the staff to be helpful, kind, and all-around charming, even though our Japanese was extremely limited. Staff definitely knew plenty of English so if the language barrier worries you—don’t let it! We booked a room with a private onsen and enjoyed recharging our batteries after a few days in Tokyo. The ryokan is so quiet, you barely see or hear anyone at all, and dinner and breakfast are both truly an incredible and tasty experience. If we ever are lucky enough to return to Hakone, we’d stay again in a heartbeat!

We honestly had no idea what we were signing up for but knew we wanted to do something traditional Japanese and opted for the room with the private onsen (the most expensive hotel of our trip) for one night. We arrived early for check-in and they were so welcoming and let us leave our things and go explore Hakone (p.s. buy the two day Hakone free pass - well worth it). We went to explore the ropeway and pirate ship boat cruise for a few hours, but unfortunately it was foggy so we couldn’t see Mt Fuji. When we returned to the ryokan at 5pm our room was set up and everything was gorgeous. They served dinner in our room for us and our two friends who were staying upstairs. It was an unbelievable kaiseki meal - which is a traditional multi-course meal that was so elegant and delicious. I am a vegan and they accomidated me beautifully - making thoughtful, delicious substitutions for the animal products the rest of our party had. Our server, Liu was so sweet and polite and delightful, smiling as he explained every item of every course when he brought them in. His positive energy was so amazing and made the meal even better. He also recommended an epic dry sake that we loved. After dinner we cleared and our beds were made up, we got to climb into our private onsen which was SO magical. Rain pitter pattered on the bamboo roof above us and we took turns dousing our heads in ice cold water to cool down in the hot spring tub. We slept SO well eventhough we were only sleeping on mats on the floor. We woke up as the light of morning glowed behind the rice paper walls. We soaked in the onsen again and then had a delicious breakfast (huge spread) served in a communal room. Everything was perfect, quiet, serene and the attention to detail was incredible. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone.

Me and my boyfriend loved this place! We stayed for 1 night in January, and the enjoyed the stay from the first welcoming tea they served with sweets to the moment we left:) For being able to enjoy the private bath, this ryokan is very affordable! There is no limit of how many times you can book the bath, so we ended up going three times during our stay! We picked the red snapper pod for our dinner and it was very enjoyable. The course had so many different kinds of veggies, and it was very refreshing to eat such healthy dinner especially after having so much junk food and alcohol throughout our trip!! We got lost in the way from the bus stop to ryokan, but the staff was able to tell us exactly which location to go. He also helped us plan for the next date with a map. If we had a chance would love to stay at this place again!
